Robbie wiped the grime from his brow as the digital clock in the squad car flicked over to 0759. One minute left of a brutal sixteen-hour shift — his third in a week. The city hadn't slept, and neither had he.

Dispatch crackled in his earpiece, but he ignored it this time. For once, the silence mattered more.

He pulled into the driveway, engine humming low, expecting darkness in the windows like usual. But the porch light was on. That was never a good sign.

As he stepped inside, the air was heavy. There she was — arms crossed, eyes sharp, lips pressed in that way that told him she'd been up all night too.

"You couldn't call?" she asked coldly.

Robbie let out a breath. He'd rehearsed a hundred excuses on the drive home. None of them mattered now.
