Terri was humming slightly as she approached the front door of her house, books clung to her chest as usual. Today was her 16th birthday, quite the milestone as far as some were concerned. Terri was just on her way back from school, though unlike most kids her age school was something she enjoyed, something she loved. Ever since she was little she had been a bookworm, a nerd, a geek, whatever else one might call it. The girl loved to read, loved to study, loved to learn. That was why when her mother had offered to let her skip school for the day Terri had immediately turned down the offer, insisting that she would rather go to school than have her record tarnished.
"I can't believe I'm almost 16 years old..." Or at least it was almost as far as Terri was concerned. Whilst today was her birthday, the actual time of her birth had been bang on 4pm in the afternoon, meaning she would technically not turn 16 for another 10 or so minutes. Most people didn't care about the distinction, but it was little technicalities that Terri loved so much.
The girl just chuckled to herself as she opened the front door, stepping into the house and checking her watch as she slipped off her shoes, only a few more minutes before the big moment and she could finally start celebrating being another year older. "Mom! I'm home!" Terri lived alone with her mother, the girl having no idea who her father was or what he was like. But then her mom had always been all she ever needed, and if she didn't want to talk about Terri's father, then Terri wasn't going to raise the issue either. "Mom? You're not hiding and planning on jumping out at me are you?" Terri walked into the living room, still holding her books against her chest.
