The wedding was called off at the last moment. The warning signs have been there for some time. She was just not into him. Too sophisticated and pretty? Maybe. He did his best to charm her, but was not enough. The dogged pursuit of her affections in vain.

Jordan Garrett sat on the breakfast table having his morning coffee. His son Myles Garrett on the other end, a complete silence in the air. He did not want to probe further. His son looked heart broken, he was madly in love with the woman who could have been his bride.

"Did you hear back from her?" Jordan asked his son, with a smirk on his face. He already knew the answer as Myles shook his head. Because, Jordan was meeting her for coffee later today. He had a business proposition for the heiress.

Jordan looked good for his age. He was 55 years old, over six feet tall, with a burly muscular frame, broad chest, powerful arms. His eyes were dark brown, black hair with some greying at the temples. Complexion dark brown. He had an assertive demeanor, exuding confidence in his gait. With women, he was attentive, flirtatious, romantic.

He finished his coffee and headed to the master bedroom to get ready. Taking off his lounge pants and shirt to get into the shower. The water felt warm, caressing his glistening ebony skin. Outline of a six pack from hours in the gym even at his age. He donned a pair of dark grey flannel pants, light blue shirt and black leather shoes. A splash of his favorite deodorant completing the ensemble, accentuating his manly musky scent.

Jordan owned a chain of restaurants, bars and night clubs. The business not the most prestigious sometimes, given the unsavory elements one can come across once in a while, or have to cozy up to. He had been eying another company to acquire, owned by the family the one his son was supposed to married into, but that was not to be. Jordan had an alternative plan. The reason behind his rendezvous with the young heiress.

He drove to the coffee shop at the Mandarin Oriental in mid-town New York. Handing the keys to the valet and sauntering into the grand hotel lobby, white marble floors glistening, a smattering of white and pink lilies all over the interiors, in fancy flower pots. Jordan had met her a few times, given Myles was engaged for almost 4 months.
He grabbed a table in the cozy corner for the café and waited for her.

Blond hair picked up the breeze as she stepped from the car, a black town car with tinted rear windows. The driver had been hired by her grandfather. He'd been driving for her family for that long/ He was good at his job , even if he was much more hunched over and grey haired then when they had first met. The man had been more of a parental figure to her then her actual parents, taking her too and from school, on her first date, to icecream after her first breakup. Even took her too and home from the dinner where she'd called off her wedding.

Now he took her too and from business meetings between her last year of college classes where she was bored to tears running an empire that she'd never really wanted nore had she expected to, in the last year of her masters degree. All because of her father's untimely death.

A heart attack at the top of the stairs had sent him tumbling down the opulent curving staircase in their family home, and because she'd been busy with school and staying in the condo near campus, it hadn't been until their weekly dinner, when she'd returned home to find him. The shock months old at the time had lead to her calling off the wedding. The shock of seeing her father in that state. Alone. Because he'd loved her mother so deeply and never remarried after she died when she was a child. It had shocked her into realizing that she didn't love him like that. She didn't want him that way.

It had been a devastating realization to have weeks before the wedding. Along with the one that she was wasting her life doing what her father wanted. Since then she'd been selling off bits and pieces of her fathers, businesses, the funds could easily sustain her for the rest of her life several times over even. What she would do once it was all gone? Maybe something to do with art, she'd really enjoyed the few classes she had managed to sneak in while getting her business degree.

Maybe something in fashion?

This was the last step. The last piece to the puzzle. The Luxury entertainment portion of her father's business, and her intent had been to sell it to his old partner. A man she'd met once as a girlfriend and then three times as his son's fiancée. A man she hadn't seen since calling off the wedding. Myles's Father Jordan Garrett.

" Miss Hicks." Kirinna Hicks turned her big brown eyes to the driver who offered his hand to help her onto the curb. The slender white dress she wore sleeveless with a high neckline, reaching to just above her knees. Adorned with a single golden chain belt around the waist, a simple gold necklace and earrings the close toed heels sported a golden bow and gold heels, that clicked as she walked into the hotel lobby, turning into the coffee shop smoothly, a soft, delicate smile on her face when she spotted the elder man sitting rather comfortably. Without the same ease that his son had exuded.

She approached slowly, tucking the manilla file folder under one arm, the same arm that her small purse was under. Leaning in to offer her hand.

" Afternoon Mr Garrett." Her hand outstretched. Slender delicate fingers with beautifully manicured nails, a faint tan line on her ring ringer, where the engagement ring she had given back had sat.

The clickety clackety sound of her heels against the marble floors caught his attention. Jordan turned his head to catch a sight of the blonde, walking towards the cafe. His eyes savored her lovely young curves. A sigh escaping his lips. She could have been his daughter in law.

"Hello Kirinna, good to see you and thank you for making the time to meet me." Jordan stood up from his seat as she got closer to greet her. Putting his arms gently at the sides of her waist for an affectionate hug. she felt warm and soft, the sweet feminine scent of her young body hitting his senses. The corner seating in the cafe was shaped like half-moon, which meant they would be sitting side by side with a small round table in front. The seat was upholstered in red velvet, a white linen covering the table. Like a well-mannered gentleman, Jordan took her delicate hand, easing the young lady into the couch chair and then settled beside her.

"I wish we met under better circumstances. To be honest, I never expected that you would call off the wedding, and once again, sorry about your father. He was my business partner for decades, more a close friend then a partner."

After her dad passed away, Jordan had been running the luxury entertainment business by himself, not wanting to involve the heiress in day-to-day work. It was not the kind of business a young woman would want to be associated with, though technically, she was an equal partner now after passing away of her father. Jordan had been eying that part of the business for some time, wanting full ownership and control. A thought swirling in his mind since last night on how to make it happen.

He had mentioned this with Myles before leaving the house, letting his son know that he was going to meet his ex-fiancée. "I want to acquire her, her part of the business. It would have been easier with the wedding, but now I need to find another way." The son had nodded, not sure what else to say, a tinge of jealousy and angst in his eyes. Not sure what his dad meant.

A waitress arrived at the table. "What would you like to have, Kirinna?" Jordan asked her to go first. Then, he ordered a cup of black coffee for himself, no cream and no sugar. While waiting for coffee, there was some small talk, about the weather, her interests and education, hobbies, future. Once their drinks had arrived, Jordan took a sip of his coffee and turned slightly towards Kirinna.

"Not sure if you already have sensed it, but I wanted to meet you, to make a business proposition. As you are aware, Mr. Hicks was my business partner and we own the Blue Angels Entertainment equally. However, as your father wished in his will, if this was to continue, there has to be some kind of alliance between our families. You are his only daughter, and with Myles out of the picture, it just leaves us, you and me."

He paused, that was too much of a proposition to make in one go, but there was no other way to broach the subject.

" Father's death caused me to re-evaluate what I wanted in many aspects of life. I did try to explain to Myles. I never expected he'd take it so hard." It wasn't as if she hadn't taken it hard as well. Realizing that what you thought was love, wasn't was hard no matter what position you were in. " It's unfortunate that father expected I'd go through with it even if he did have his own doubts." A grimace on her face as she sipped the tea without any sugar, reaching for the tiny stand in the center of the table. She'd thought she could stomach the fruit tea without sugar, she was wrong.

She'd been wrong about a lot of things.. A clause in her father's will regarding the sale of this particular branch of business for example. While it made sense of a lot of things, her father asking her if she was absolutely sure about Myles repeatedly, weeks before the will was amended. She understood that it had been intended to protect her. A marriage to Myles could have resulted in his family claiming full ownership of the business and then discarding her. The clause about the familial link made it so that she could not have been discarded. However Like Mr Garret, her father could have never expected that she wouldn't go through with the wedding.

It did complicate things.

" My lawyer's tell me that there is no way around the stipulations in the will. If sold, my father's shares must be sold to someone with a familial link. And that link cannot be severed for at least two years after sale." Two, three packets of sugar emptied into the amber liquid. She picked up a spoon, stirring as she watched all the little crystals dissolve. Setting the spoon down on the saucer before tasting the drink again. " Or I have to remain an active partner in the business in perpetuity."

She could remain a silent partner. That was always an option. But it didn't really give her the clean slate she had been looking for. She wanted the freedom to find herself outside of her father's, even Myle's expectations for her and so long as this tethered her to them... She'd never truly have that. Besides, Kirinna looked at Jordan Garrett through her lashes over her steaming cup as she took a long drink of the now too sweet tea. He wasn't the sort of man, in business or otherwise that would enjoy having to answer to a slip of a girl for every decision he made.

Smiling as she lowered the cup, wondering how frustrated the man whom must share Myle's need for order and control felt about a situation where he had so little. Where his options are limited.

" The easiest answer would be to marry Myles as was planned, live as husband and wife and then part after the two year time period was up but." Another frown. They both knew that Myles would not be capable of seeing such an arrangement as simply a business one.

Jordan was a little surprised at her reply. She was the one who called off the wedding with his son, Myles. Now, is she reconsidering it? This is not what he wanted, his eyes were now set on her company, and her. Both an enticing acquisition target for him. The conversation was moving fast, as if no time was to be expended on small talk and formalities.

"I don't think marriage to Myles, even if just for 2 years, is a realistic option anymore." He stated, pausing for a few moments for her reaction before dwelling on his reason for saying so. "He still has feelings for you and would agree in an instant. I know how heartbroken he was when you two broke off, or rather, you dumped him. However, we both know that Myles would not be able to see this arrangement as a purely business alliance. He may not want to step away after 2 years."

Jordan liked his coffee hot. He was already down to the last sip and their conversation had just started. He started thinking about ways to keep here with him a little longer. Of course, they had to finish the modalities of the sale. Maybe have her stay for lunch or more. The coffee shop was next to an amazing restaurant specializing in Mediterranean cuisine.

"I have an idea, Kirinna. I have been thinking about this for some time, so not a spur of the moment decision, but very thoroughly pondered. How about you and I get married? That will pave for a smooth sale of your business to me, and best for both of us. It is only for 2 years, we can part ways when the legal requirements are met." His deep brown eyes looked directly into her bright beautiful ones. More Jordan sat close to her, talked to her, the more he liked her.

Jordan did realise Kirinna was less than half his age, young enough to be his daughter. But this arrangement made perfect sense to his experienced mature mind. He wanted full control of the business, not having to be answerable to a young heiress, inexperienced in running a business of luxury entertainment. It required the firm hand of an older man, who was assertive, strong and powerful.

Then, there was one more reason on his mind, but not so obvious in his words. Who would not want to have a pretty woman on his arm, and a chance to take over her business. The young heiress was a delectable "catch".

"I know losing your father, and having to deal with the day to day affairs of the business has been hard. I want to be on your side, every step of the way, support you in whatever interests you truly want to pursue."

The ball was in her court now.

At first she was shocked. Her hand holding the pretty tea cup faltering on it's way to her lips. Her gaze finding his as she set the cup down. Certain She must have misheard. There was no way that this man, Jordan Garrett, was suggesting that they marry.

Then he continued and confirmed that he had indeed suggested such an event, she tore her gaze away from him focusing on the amber fluid in her cup.

" I don't think you understand Mr Garrett, The marriage must be legal, with no chance of annulment." That would mean that she would have to be intimate with her husband, at least once during the 2 year time frame, which had been why she had suggested Myles. While sex had never been great with him, It had been comfortable, in the way such intimacy was when you had a very limited pool of experiences. Myles had been a bulk of her firsts. Careful enough in his own inexperience to try and ensure the experiences were pleasurable for them both, but lacking the skill to guarantee that.

It was then her gaze returned to the older male, watching as his own traced the single lock of her hair that had escaped from the rest pinned back behind her ear, saw the hunger as the golden strands tumbled over her collar. The way the warmth of his thigh, pressed into hers under the table and how close he sat, all alluded to an intimacy they didn't actually share, but certainly could. Kirinna changed the subject slightly as she mulled over the preposition, filling the silence.

" My plan is to finish my Masters in business, I've a few months left." She had been set to graduate just a year behind his son after all. " Father would have wanted that at least... and then... "She wanted to travel, to find her passion, inspiration, direction. Would he really be willing to let his wife gallivant around the world? . " I had planned to travel."

" What would such a marriage look like to you Mr Ga-" She caught herself as she tilted her face up to look directly in his eyes, the grey hairs around his face made him look distinguished in a way his son had never looked and though his expression was stern, there were crinkles around his eyes that eluded to the gentle kindness that came with wisdom. She sensed he was handling her with kid gloves, as many had since her father's death. He'd need to stop doing that if she was going to take this proposition seriously. She was young, but she was an adult. If he wanted her to take him and this suggestion seriously. He'd need to treat her as such.
"Jordan?"

Listening to his response intently she finished her tea in silence. Myles wouldn't understand. Any hopes she had for keeping a friendship with the boy would likely go right out the window, The difference in their ages would also be talked about. That he was her former fiancees father and her father's friend would also be brought into question, but if she stuck with her plans to travel she'd be far enough away from the talk, from Myles and the media for it to effect her very little. He was the one who would have to bear the brunt of the scrutiny anyhow. Was her father's half of the business really worth all that to him?

" A small wedding. Private, is best and any media coverage would have to be carefully controlled."

His lips curled and eyes narrowed in excitement at her words. Not expecting that she would agree so easily, so her slow measured reply was proper, but still delightful. He understood her predicament, and nodded his head.

"I understand that for this marriage to be legal and for our business agreement to go through, we have to live like husband and wife, appear in public together, stay in the same house, share a room, sleep in the same bed. Get intimate."

More he talked, more he liked how the future was unfolding for him, for them. He felt the heat of her body through the thin fabric of their clothes as they sat side by side, his thighs touching hers. He made no effort to move away, pressing even more as he leaned in to listen to her words, whisper his. The scent of her youth was intoxicating.

"There is no rush, we can get engaged, and wait for you to finish your masters before we get married." His eyes were now locked with hers and he took her hand in his, squeezing gently to comfort her. He was the older experienced mature partner, taking the lead.

"I will support you in whatever interests you want to pursue. If you want to travel, so should you. I could even join you once in a while when the work will permit."
"You can call me Jordan, Kirinna. A small wedding would be perfect, whatever you want."

It was still bright and sunny outside, but the sun had started the westward journey. They did not realize the time had flown by and it was almost lunch time.

"Shall we get some lunch? After that, do you want to come with me to my place? We both should announce this to Myles, so her is aware of everything, I am sure he will not take this well, he still has a crush on you."

The waitress arrived again to take away their empty cups and clean the table.

"Mr. Garrett, would you be staying for lunch? I could get you the lunch menu here itself if you would like." Jordan was a regular there and tipped well. The girl was intrigued by the young lady with him today, that was unusual.

" I'm not sure I want to be there when Myles is informed." Kirinna said softly after giving her lunch order to the waitress, a salad off the cafe's limited menu. She hadn't planned on eating lunch here initially. She'd expected that the clause would scare him away from buying, or that he would offer a different solution. She should have expected the unexpected.

He seemed content to let her think in silence, such a difference from his son who had always filled the quiet around them for fear that her thoughts may lead to ruin. He hadn't been wrong. To much time in her thoughts had meant the death of their relationship.

Her fork sunk into the crisp lettuces and trappings before she spoke again.

" Myles never spoke of his mother. Only you, only how much he looks up to you, want's to be you, this could."She stopped as she tried to find the words. It was cruel, a heartless thing she was seriously considering and the tabloids would feed on that until someone wealthy did something worse. Her voice lowered, the tone sombre due to the subject matter surely. " This could destroy him." He'd never believe it was just a business arrangement and even if he did, he'd never understand why she'd choose Jordan over him, and he'd feel inadequate.

And that would hurt her, because she had loved his son, still did, just not with the depth of love that she desired to love and be loved with. There was no way they could keep this from him though, and if they tried and he found out. It would be worse for them all. Under the table, she crossed one leg over the other, wondering if she could do such a thing. Marry her former fiance's father, live with him, share his bed, and still sleep at night.

Could he?

She looked up at Jordan Garrett her gaze catching how he watched her, fingers shifting on her fork cheeks warming as she returned her own gaze to her salad. It had been just that little bit too long since she'd had that kind of attention. After inheriting her fathers wealth , it wasn't like she'd dated, or slept around, and her separation with Myles was still so fresh, it hadn't really been her focus.

Strangely she couldn't focus on much else now.

" I don't think we should wait. The sooner the clock starts, the sooner it can end." She a forkful of food in her mouth, chewing slowly. With a swallow she reached for a sparkling water with lemon that had been brought with her meal. " I would have had schooling to complete after Marrying Myles anyhow." They'd planned the wedding to Honeymoon during her final spring break. Another long pause.

" Theres no way to do this without him hating me is there?" There was, she could just not sell, be forever tied to her father's legacy.

"Unfortunately, No. But, Myles is a grown up man and will understand, and learn to cope with it." Jordan replied when Kirinna mentioned that there was no way to do this without her ex-fiance hating her. "It will be a tough pill to swallow, when we tell our decision to him, but he will come to terms with it. This is in best interest for our business, families, and us."

He took a bite of the grilled chicken salad, chewing slowly, taking long gaps between his bites to let the conversation flow.

"I don't want to wait either, Kirinna. I want us to get married as soon as we can." He sounded impatient now, his eyes lit up when she said sooner was better. "We can stick to the original plan you had with Myles. Use your spring break for the wedding, and honeymoon. I can ask my assistant to hire a wedding planner, and get this started.

Spring break was about 4 weeks away, so enough time for planning, inviting a small list of guests, booking a location, band, catering, flowers. The list of things to do was probably longer, but he would leave it for the wedding planner. Unless she wanted to manage this closely.

"Did you want to plan the wedding? Work with the planner?" Jordan took another bite, his dark brown eyes always locked with her beautiful one, enjoying the adorable blush on her rosy cheeks.

"What about our honeymoon? Do you have a place in mind, some place you always wanted to go? I can get the reservations, first class flight tickets."

Jordan finished his lunch and asked the waitress to bring the check. They have been there for a long time, well past noon. He decided to tell his son when he got home . Jordan was close to Myles, and his son looked up to him. He had almost brought him up as a single parent. Jordan lost his wife Emily when Myles was very young, and did not have much recollection of his mother.

"Don't worry about sharing this news with him. I can do it, you do not need to be there.Though, for him to believe, some kind of confirmation from you would be nice. Do you want to come over to my place and stay the night? That way, Myles would know that I was telling the truth. That, you indeed are betrothed to me now."

She blushed more when he suggested she come over and stay the night. It wasn't as if she was virginal but the casual way he'd invited her to stay the night still caught her off guard. She nodded and agreed to be by after dinner. Then left after kissing his cheek when he pulled her into a hug. Before they left, she purchased one of the pastries waiting as they packaged it up into a little box.

Returning to put the little box in his hand.

" Take this to Myles. Its his favorite, It may not soften the blow but..." She paused offering him a small grin " Bitter pills are easier to swallow with something sweet." Was this arrangement the bitter pill or the something sweet? She wouldn't say. Because even she didn't know at this point. Two years wasn't a long time after all. Even though it seemed like an eternity at this point.

Kirinna left the café with the same confident strides that had brought her into the place, but with an apprehension she hadn't felt prior.

He father's home had been put up for sale, but the market was trash and it would probably take a visiting prince or the formation of another content house for her to seen it sold. Still it was kept pristine to show and everything was ready to be packed up at a moments notice. She went back to pack a bag, a change of clothes, a nightgown for sleeping in. Her driver carried the bag to the car and asked her to let him know when she was ready to leave.

Hopefully Jordan would be finished explaining things to Myles before she arrived.

She ate dinner alone and spent some time in the campus library. Though she didn't get much studying done.

Arriving on the step with her driver at her side insisting on carrying the small bag only releasing it when he could hand it to one of the Mr Garrett's in residence.

Of course it was Myles who answered the door. His gaze hopeful and angry all at once. Looking at her as if he was hoping she would explain away the truth of the situation his father had likely taken such care with. She couldn't give him that though.

" I'd appreciate being shown to our room, Jordan." Her gaze finding the older man's as he rounded the corner, clearly not as eager as his counterpart to meet her at the door. His approach was slow a deliberate stride, watching him take the strap of her bag from Myles. Who looked heartbroken, incredulous, and infuriated. All that she had been hoping to avoid seeing.
