Video games. Cinema. Postcasts. Even that obscure ambient track from a forgotten indie project... they all carry within them something more than just notes and rhythm.
They're portals...
To all the creatives, dreamers, and fellow audiophiles out there, I put this question to you:
Do soundtracks transport you?
Do they carry you into the world they're written forβbe it a post-apocalyptic wasteland, an ancient elven kingdom, or the neon blur of a sci-fi city?
Do certain soundtracks stir something deep in you? Do you feel goosebumps rising, your breath catching, or tears threatening just from a single melody?
Have you ever found a track so powerful that it makes daunting tasks feel suddenly... doable?
Do you listen to soundtracks while you create? Whether it's writing, painting, sculpting, coding, or something entirely your own, does the music guide your hand?
Are there tracks you avoid entirely, not because they're bad, but because they're too heavy to listen to?
And what about the oppositeβsongs that spark joy, focus, or the kind of cinematic inspiration that makes you want to start over just to feel it again?
I suppose I should answer, since I asked.
For me, David Bowie's last albumβBlackstarβis something I can't bear to listen to. Lazarus was a song my mother played obsessively during her cancer battle, and nowβ¦ I simply cannae listen to it.
On the flip side, Veilguardβyes, that beautiful, infuriating, strangely -meh, should have waited until it was on sale- gameβI have a visceral reaction to its score. The music makes me feel everything: hope, fear, longing, wonderβ¦ even when the writing had me pulling my hair out (and no, you won't change my mind on that). I finished the game and swore I was done... but I couldn't stay away. I missed the music. So what did I do?
β¦I started a new playthrough.
I know. I know.
But Emmerich...
(Alright, there are other reasons too, but I digress.)
So now, dear readerβfellow writer, artist, gamer, or music-loverβI ask you:
What soundtrack moves you?
What worlds do you revisit through sound?
Do you create in noise or in silence?
What song makes you stop everything because it means something only you could understand?
Please share your favouritesβI am sincerely curious and wouldn't mind finding other ambient gems to listen to...
