Romy knew fresh meat when she saw it. The girl crossing the quad from the admissions building toward the dorms was definitely fresh meat.
The girl wore the same uniform as every other girl at St Penitent’s School for Wayward Girls: Plaid skirt, white blouse, blue cardigan, red tie, white knee-socks, patent leather shoes. She carried her books in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other. There was a backpack slung over her shoulder, the clothes she came in with, probably.
Romy and her pack occupied one side of the sidewalk in front of the dorms. Mattie and her pack occupied the other. Mattie gave no indication that she’d seen the girl, or cared. Romy had no idea Mattie was just waiting for her to make the first move.
And make it she did.
Romy pretended to pay the girl no mind, but when the girl was close, she laughed at something one of her girls said and took a step back. Romy was every bit of six feet tall and was built like a stack of bricks with extra bricks for muscle. Bumping into her was like bumping into a tank. Coffee splashed, spilling on Romy’s shoes. She put on her game face.
“Watch where you’re going, you stupid cunt!”
She stepped into the girl’s personal space.
“You spilled coffee on my fucking shoes! How the fuck am I gonna pass inspection with coffee on my shoes? Huh? Stupid scrawny bitch!”
