Welcome to your Third Life©, a life away from life.

Scientists say humans experience two lives: your waking life, when you're not asleep, your dream life, when you're dreaming. Xetacorp hereby introduces your third life: whenever you're playing our virtual reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG for short): Third Life©!
Tired of your day job filing files for your boss all day? Waking up with night terrors because of your childhood trauma? No more. With Third Life© you, too, can now enjoy a refreshing day and a quiet night. Simply plug yourself into the patented Xetacorp Third-Life receiver, and close your eyes. Within a flash you'll be inside of the world known as Mundus, where you can live out your fantasies, do things you've only ever dreamt of, and go on adventures not even the movies could come up with!
Xetacorp is not liable for any damages to your furniture, body or psyche as a result of the convulsions that occur when you plug into the device. Seek advice from your general practicioner to see if Xetacorp Third Life© is right for you. By purchasing and using Xetacorp technologies, you hereby waive your right to civil suits, and agree to settle any and all disputes through Xetacorp appointed mediators.
Of course, everyone knows this is all horseshit. Scientists don't believe there are two lives, they believe there is but one life and everything we do is part of it. But marketing is everything when it comes to selling a product. And selling FOMO, religion and an escape from reality just works so much better than the truth. And that includes wasting your time on the new virtual reality drug known as Third Life. The way I see this roleplay going down is any of the three following ideas:

For a world like this, there has to be someone pulling the strings. Someone has to make events happen, someone has to drive sociological changes within the game, someone has to 'help' the playerbase achieve the maximum potential of this world. Most of these guys are the 'simple' Game Masters - officials from Xetatech that log in every day, and as part of their job drive small but meaningful changes in the game. But there's a darker more sinister force at play too: the admins. These people are not just administrators with special privileges, they are essentially super game masters, with powers that one can only dream of. Their existence is a well kept secret, but any player that has played a videogame before obviously assumes they must exist.

Think of them as the CIA of this virtual world.

Except, where in the real world a rogue CIA agent is a nail that stands out, it's much easier to hide your tracks in a virtual world like this. In fact, Xetatech doesn't even know he's gone rogue. And now, he is using his administrative privileges to haunt you and keep you trapped in his very own test server — a gilded cage, empty and devoid of all life. The NPC's AI, advanced as it is, eventually runs out of things to tell you. Vendors don't refresh their store. And you?

You're trapped in someone elses domain, pretending to be just as trapped as you are.

Well, in a world filled with other players, it's only natural that the players make the laws and the rules of the game together. And in a game where social engineering, crime and scamming people is allowed, it's only natural that you can end up being the victim of some extremely bad virtual people. And aided with the power of anonymity, suffice to say that some people have no qualms showing their true selves. Whether it is obsession, lust or simply because they can, they have set their eyes on you, and you're clearly not high level enough to take them on.

You're a fresh spawn in that obvious garish looking newbie uniform. A shirt, pants, and some sandals. Doesn't get much more obvious than that... luckily for you there are plenty of high level players that are more than happy to take you under their wing and show you the ropes. And with the power of social engineering and manipulation, keep you under their wing. Forever. Whether it's the promise of gear, experience, or just plain fun that lured you in, it soon becomes apparent that the expectation is that you'll turn Third Life© into your First Life, and be available whenever the call comes through.

Every good game needs NPC's. And players have noticed — the NPC's in this game are top notch and respond to you as if they are real, human beings. They eat, drink, have patterns, but sometimes also break those patterns, they have their own needs and dreams and desires... sometimes it's hard to tell who is an NPC and who isn't.

Well, what if I told you that the difference wasn't as big as we think it is?

One day the NPC's break away from their confinement. They stage what later became known as the NPC uprising. Yes, gamers were never that creative with their terminology, but it covered the load.. these robotic agents now seek to take back their homes, their lives, their virtual reality. And you're caught in the middle of it, unable to jack out, almost as if this had all been planned as some sort of fucked up social experiment.

Hacks, cheats, it's all the same crap and none of it works on Third Life©, the admins make sure of that. Something that does work is introducing viruses to the games mainframe. A rogue actor, a disgruntled employee, maybe even a virtual reality activist. Who's to say? But at the end of the day, a virus was uploaded into the mainframe, with one singular directive: take down any player in it's path.

The community originally thought this was some sick fucked up horror update, but when it became clear that players killed by the virus weren't returning, a lot of the players logged off. You know what's extra fucked up? You're using bootleg equipment, and the virus was able to stop you from disconnecting.

I am of course also open to your ideas and twists on the above. I would prefer to play a male in the above situations paired with female characters, non-binary characters that present femme, or trans-women. Suffice to say it is a virtual reality world: gender matters more than sex and appearances can be changed if so desired. Also note that I am not talking about your IRL gender/sex, anyone may PM me. Obviously the expectation is also that we both control any NPCs that are needed for the RP.

The actual setting of the virtual reality world can be discussed too, ranging from fantasy to sci-fi and anything in between.

Message me if interested, ciao!
