Admiral Rachel Sinclair of Earth stood at attention with the rest of the military officers. The group was assembled on a station orbiting Mars, belonging to the Stellar Humanity United Military. SHUM, while not universally responsible for the defense of humankind among the stars, was the premier fighting force that did so.

Her daughter, Ira, was not far. Just outside the room where the presentation was occurring. Scientists were going over charts, graphs, and other displays explaining the benefits and drawbacks of the StarMech program. "The biggest issue, we've found," the leading presenter said, "is reaction time between mecha and pilot. This can be solved with various cybernetic implants, the utility of which was already discussed earlier, for both military and medical applications. As a demonstration of what might be possible, we have Ira Sinclair ready to take the podium."

Ira walked into the room from the side. Her eyes scanned the various brass-some she knew. Most she didn't. Her eyes lingered just a few moments on her mother-who had tried, time and again, to talk her out of this. "Thank you, Adler, for the introduction. As some of you may know," she addressed the assembled officers, "I was born with a variety of serious health complications. Thanks to the advances in cybernetics and medicine, originally developed for exploration of Melchor, I stand here before you on my two feet. I am, to the best of my knowledge, the single most experienced woman today when it comes to the use of and integration of cybernetics into the human body. Which is why I have been training on one of the prototype mecha. The issue Adler has mentioned as the single biggest roadblock has, at least for me, been solved. By connecting directly to the mech's sensory apparatus, I am able to pilot it with extreme accuracy and precision."

Ira continued her part of the presentation for a good ten minutes, after which Adler retook the stage. She walked back behind the stage, letting out a breath she didn't realize she was even holding.

Back in front, as Adler wound the presentation down, the officer next to Leona Maxwell scoffed slightly. "She might have the bits needed to run a mecha, but she's never even been in a fight. Admiral Sinclair made sure of that. I don't doubt her sincerity-I just doubt her capabilities. We need soldiers in these things-not medical experiments."
