Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. When you heard which you were thinking about some old crone with nigh unbeatable magic, who goes around making everyone else’s lives just a bit worse because she can. And those stories exist for a reason, they do. Some of my ancestors have been (and still are) just terrible to deal with.
But that’s not me, I promise. It’s not even most witches. Most of us are really nice, and far less powerful. You see, a witch doesn’t start out with the power to reshape reality. Nobody wants a baby to have that kind of power. Or a horny teenager. Those types really can do lots of damage to people around them.
Witches have to cultivate their own power. Every deal they make, each time they complete a contract, their power grows. In the past, this has been the reason why witches often offer their services in the way of boons and small gifts. Each time this happens the witch grows in power. It’s also why some of them get old and jaded after helping out so many people.
But times have changed. Witches don’t need to skulk around in the shadows anymore. Some of us, like me, are looking for other ways to grow our power. For me, that path is as more unique than others, but I think it should serve me well. If completed contracts make you stronger, I thought, there’s an obvious career path right there; so I became a lawyer!
