Sam shivered a bit, peering through the darkness of the tunnel. The others had given her a flashlight, but the batteries had given out about halfway to the entrance. She sighed, throwing the light to the side. It was useless now and as far as she knew, she didn't have to worry about anything hearing the clash of the light hitting the cool ground. Samantha finally hit the stairs and felt her way up. The only thing she had to go by now was the tiny bit of light that came in from the outside. From now on she would have to worry about every noise and movement she made.
Never even in her wildest nightmares had she thought this day would come. A normal person would have thought that the world would end in war, rapture, comet hitting the planet, almost anything besides what had actually happened. Roughly a month ago Hell seemed spew from the depths of Earth and now all of it's inhabitants called the surface home. Whatever humans were left now lived in underground fallout shelters. No one really knew what was out there, or how many people were still alive. The only thing that was for sure was that if you went to the surface you were sure to die. Now that a month had past it seemed that if you stayed under ground you would die as well. Groups that lived together either turned to cannibalism or attempting to go to the surface for food. Her group drew straws. She lost.
Sam got the the ladder and adjusted her gas mask quickly before she started to climb. Her bright red hair looked almost black with all the dust and soot that had collected on her. In fact, the majority of her had at least a greyish tint to in due to the dust. The only thing that had any color left were her lavender-blue eyes. When Hell broke loose Sam was working at a restaurant as a hostess. She had on a black pair of pants some sneakers and a nice purple button-up shirt. Now that pants had been reduced to shredded shorts and the shirt had holes galore but she had managed to get a nice long coat off an old man who had died down there.
Samantha finally reached the surface, looking around cautiously for any sign of life. While she did have a small blade, it wouldn't do her much good if one of these demons or vampires she had heard about came at her. After assuring herself that nothing was there as of right now, she walked quietly over to the closest building that still wasn't on fire and looked like it might have something worth salvaging in it. It was a Quick-E-Mart that hadn't completely burned down. Her eyes constantly were on the lookout for movement and if she even though she heard or saw something she would duck into the closest hiding space she could find and sit and wait for a while until she determined it was safe. Finally she had made it to the store and to her surprise it actually had a few cans of food that weren't completely destroyed. She kneeled down, letting her guard down for a moment as she shoved every piece of food she could find in her pockets. Maybe this was actually going to work. Maybe she could save the people down there afterall.
