Okay so first off an apology, I've been quite ill on and off and that combined with a sudden flurry of responses to older threads (some of which had nothing to do with said thread anyway) was... Overwhelming. I had to take a little time away, so I apologise for any sudden silence you may have experienced, and hope you'll not judge me too harshly.
Secondly, some trigger warnings: This is an RT based around the historical freak shows that were popular between 1840 and 1940, admittedly with some adjustments made and with the further possibility of extending the concept to modern times, but the same themes will be present all the same. Notably you can expect language of that time to be present too, much of which would be correctly treated as slurs today.
That being said, here's the more fun part. Imagine those freak shows, imagine come to that how easy it would have been to tour on the basis of an all female freak show: women were supposed to be with hearth and home, were expected to be demure and Christian in all things... Not to parade themselves on a stage, showing off their unsightly deformities of body and limb, or the lascivious crudity of their tattooed skin or pierced flesh.
Simply put, I'm looking for actual romance here, but what form that takes is up to you! Another exhibit, a paying patron whose infatuation grows, or the owner of the show themselves?
Next up, spicy stuff! For this one I'm going to actually simply say 'no limits', with the caveat that I can in fact politely decline anything I didn't think of before that point. I have my favourites too and I'll gladly share with you, but the key thing here is I'd love to do an RP or two with a character so wildly outside of the normal standards for beauty, and how that beauty really can be in the eye of the beholder.
I'll get some pictures up here as and when I can manage that, but for now the sort of exhibits you might expect could include:
Congenital limb deformities - born with deformed or missing limbs, one historical case would be a woman who would demonstrate how she dressed and went about her day using only her feet to grip and manipulate objects, because she was born without arms.
Obesity - what it says on the tin really, often paid less than other performers and usually staged alongside unusually thin or tall performers for the added contrast.
E.D. - yes, really. 'Human/living cadavers' were exhibited as living skeletons, sometimes as a result of physical disease but often as a result of anorexia or bulemia.
Gigantism - A simple one really, bigly tall.
Dwarfism - also a simple one, bigly unbig.
Hirsutism - Many hairy. Sometimes that would be the famous bearded lady, sometimes a woman whose body hair grew exceptionally long and thick in a short time. Most often performers such as these would wear underwear or somewhat (for the time) revealing clothing, but would occasionally simply go on stage nude.
Half Woman, Half Man - a euphemism for intersex individuals, one famous example wore male show clothes on one side of their body and female on the other, bearded on one half and not on the other and so forth. They were likely a 'female impersonator', but given how gender and identities were recorded and understood at that time, for our RP they could just as easily be actually intersex, transgender, or simply a femboy able to express himself for pay.
Tattoos - This wouldn't be one or two, which would be seen as a mark of baseness but without the dread fascination: the tattooed lady would often have almost all of her body inked up, although most often not on her face (but that is an option of course).
AN OPTIONAL EXTRA
This will only be considered in combination with one of the above or another idea, but this did happen very rarely historically...
Nymphomania - obviously an overtly sexual performance, meant to shock and disgust as well as fascinate in equal measure. It sold well, of course it did, but for this RT I'd like to focus on a character who would most often be looked at as an exhibit rather than as a person. This is however available as extra flavour.
I'd love to hear your ideas, and any other suggestions you may have too!
