It was so hot. Was Egypt usually this hot? He had to have drank three times his body weight in water and it never felt like enough.
The year was 1940.
Derek was here, near the ancient city of Thebes, searching for the tomb of one of the first recorded Egyptian pharaoh. It would be a great discovery, not only for him as a historian, but for the college back home in the States.
Thebes had been known in its time as a massive religious city, full of incredible historical finds. It attracted the wrong people, sometimes, but thankfully Derek hadn't run into anyone like that yet.

He stood observing the workers that dug up a potential tomb site, sweating buckets and wishing he had been sent somewhere much cooler, when the workers began hollering with excitement. They had definitely found something.

As he was making his way down, he saw someone. A figure he couldn’t forget. They were approaching the dig site, approaching where the workers were yelling with joy.

He caught her before she could enter; profane the site with her presence. He grabbed her roughly by her arm and yanked her back, glaring hatefully, "What the hell are you doing here, Raven?"

He took the smack without so much as a wince, "Arrogant? I'm arrogant? You can't just saunter into my expedition."

“Last I checked-“ she grunted as she wrenched her arm free. “You don’t own the site.” She said, finally looking up at him. Large sunglasses hid her sapphire eyes, her lips looking large and soft, decorated with bright red lipstick. She was beautiful. But a spiteful, childish woman.

Damn her, she was easy on the eyes; especially since he had been looking at nothing but sand for the last several hours.
"Actually, I do," he stated, "I was paid to come here. Therefore, it's mine."
"Don't be so hard on the girl, Mister..." A tall, thin man - Russian - moved to stand beside Raven, looking Derek over.
"Professor Morgan," Derek tried not to sneer, "and you are?"
"Daniil Volkov. A friend of Devushka Jones." Daniil replied. Derek looked to Raven with flat unamused eyes.
"Jones, huh?"

“What? You expected me to keep Johnson after our little incident in Panama?” She asked with a grin.

"You say that like we're married." Derek huffed before shaking his head, "Doesn't matter. Stay away from my site."
"Professor, please, we are all seekers of knowledge here. The excavation can be for all." Daniil said. Derek only glared at him.

She took off her glasses and put them in their case before smiling at Derek with a superior air about her. “See? Nice to see even out here some people still have manners.” She said as she entered.

"Raven!" Derek yelled as he moved after her, "I told you to stay away, why the hell won't you listen?!"

“Because last time I checked,” she said, turning to face him, “I don’t answer to you.” She said, poking him in the chest.

He grunted a bit and grabbed her wrist firmly, "Listen here, you little-"
"Professor," Derek felt something hard and metallic press against the back of his skull, "Please release Devushka Jones. There is no need to escalate things." Daniil warned, despite his pleasant tone. Derek glared down at Raven before letting go of her.
"I see," he said, "just like Panama."

She smiled and pet his cheek gently. “Please don’t look at me like you hate me, darling.. business is just that.. business..!” She said with a bit of a laugh as she walked down the narrow pathways towards the heart of the tomb

Derek glanced back at Daniil, who gestured for Derek to follow her. He did, moving into the tomb not far behind Raven, enjoying the coolness of it for a brief moment before looking around. He found a torch and lit it, moving towards the walls to look over the paintings and hieroglyphs.

It was a trove of ancient treasures. Not just the gold and jewels, but the knowledge, the stories. One look back at her made him taste a bitter bile, as all she wanted was some trinket for her new employer.

She was never really in it for the discovery of it, the fact that they were the first to set foot in thos place for hundreds if not thousands of years. She just wanted the money, and the fame that came with it.
He moved further in, looking over everything. There was no telling what kind of traps this place may have had. He found a corridor and moved down it, hoping it lead to the burial chamber itself, where the sarcophagus was, carefully reading the entire room to make sure nothing killed him. Or her, for that matter.

He hated himself for it. He knew it would make his life exponentially harder, but he couldn’t bring himself to even think of any harm coming to her.

He tried not to roll his eyes at the thought. Despite it all, he cared about her. Since he first met her, he cared.
It seemed pretty free of traps, and the new room they entered held even more treasures than the first.
"Probably mostly the stuff he owned in life," He muttered, moving the torch around slowly to look at everything, "wanted to take it all with him when he went."

She paused for a moment in here, shamelessly stuffing a few pieces into a bag that hung off of her shoulder. She saw him glaring. “Oh please, a souvenir never hurt anyone..~”
