Alex saw the clock. Shit, he thought. They'd all be in town for that artsy-fartsy "pick-your-passion" place. Like Build-A-Bear for thirty-something alcoholics, but with arts and crafts and wine. When he'd first heard about it, he'd decided that spending that much time avoiding Jeanette in a small town was better done with a stronger percentage of alcohol. So, he'd Googled local bars and found one that didn't look like a lumberjack dive bar. It seemed to cater to tourists—a type of place he'd normally avoid—but beggars couldn't be choosers, and he was a tourist. In fact, he was always a tourist. All his stuff was sitting in a shared storage container in New York.
Now he was alone. No one had bothered to wake him, which both pleased and pissed him off. Probably at Jeanette's request. He couldn't blame her. He'd been considering spending the afternoon shit-faced just to avoid thinking about her or being near her, so who was he to complain about being left out? It was probably for the best. He could get some practice in with the travel board he'd brought along. That way, when he worked on his music, it would be his time, not everyone else's with their incessant need to involve themselves because he was "the musical one."
Then he heard something moving in the kitchen.
Fuck, did a bear get trapped in here?
Okay, you dumbass, he thought to himself. It's not a bear.
He leaned over the banister and angled his face toward the kitchen, as if this amazing feat of human positioning would somehow improve his ability to see who—or what—it was.
"Hello?" he called.
