A lot of families are very close. Jeremy's wasn't one of them. His father left home long before he and his sister were born, they hadn't seen him since. Their mother remarried soon after, leaving an odd dissonance in the family, a feeling of something being off. His sister had been liked more by his stepfather, his mother could do little but meekly agree. So the precious little girl got almost everything she wanted. Including a full free ride in the college of her choice.
Jeremy was told 'he had to earn it.' It was a line he often muttered over a shot glass. Over three years of scrimping and saving from dead-end jobs, part-times, Temp work, and flat-out begging his friends, he managed a few years in a couple of classes... and was now a manager in a Safeway. Employee of the month, almost three months running now!
Go him.
He could barely stand Christmas anymore. Mother instisted she bring together everyone, and Jeremy always would buckle down and relent, despite not wanting to see his sister again. He was always single, she always had a handsome boy back home. He was always in a slump, she was always riding a carreer wave. And while his garage band couldn't even get out of said garage, her latest novel was always a top seller.
It made him want to break things. There was literally nothing he could say in his own defense. She always knew how to rile him up. Mainly by showing up late. Like right now.
"Three hours late." he said. "Let me guess... extended meeting?" he asked no-one, watching the clock. He could guess her gift, too. It was always one of her trashy romance novels, penned by her, without a dedication to anyone but her latest boy-toy. Ugh, he couldn't even stand it!
