Athena The goddess of wisdom add grown in tired of spending her days on Olympus with nothing to do decided that she would grace humanity with her gift and advice. Times had very much change since the days of old. Neon light head replaced places of worship for the gods and it seems like the world had forgotten about the majority of them. The gods and goddesses were fickle creatures and would not let the passing of time dim their powers and instead of becoming gods of old they decided to take part in the new society.

Dionysus had become a a liquor mobile and even though this future was fast paced and full of so many things like artificial intelligence and bright lights people still like to get drunk and live in debauchery. Aphrodite herself even though her focus was love there was also lost in her followers tend to focus on the red light District and even if that wasn’t her main idea of love she took what she could get in this day and age love and lost we’re so intertwine you couldn’t tell one from another.

Her other siblings had taken it upon themselves to make their own way in the New World and keep themselves relevant in Athena who is now known as Tina to her own band of followers she dove into technology. It was a perfect place for the goddess of wisdom everyone here wanted knowledge and wisdom and she could give it to them for a price. Information technology was the ambrosia of this world and with her learning everything so quickly it wasn’t hard to get her own following especially the ones obsessed with gaining as much knowledge as possible with monetary rewards. At least she wasn’t bored…

Truth be told she was a bit bored out of her mind until an old legend resurfaced and it was only whispers on the dark web that caught her attention especially with talk about something similar to the Golden fleece of this time. This could alleviate her boredom and bring some interesting life to her mundane existence of doing the same thing over and over. Tina would send out her henchmen to net dive and find out more about this and see if they could bring any bites back to her and if this was the real deal or something that was just a rumor.

She called a meeting of anyone interested with promises of not only knowledge and power but wealth if anyone can prove this mystery was legit and once that call was sent out she got so many bites from all over especially considering she was the CEO of her own corp and anyone who wanted to break into the upper echelons of the society will try their best to get into this meeting with her since she was the one controlling the marionette strings and could open so many doors. Letting whoever decided to plead their case to come in she waited for the next person and hoping that someone would bring her good news and not just rumors or fairytales.

The sights and sounds of Olympus were almost overwhelming to a kid from a smaller city state like Argos. While his hometown was definitely no small shipping port it certainly lacked the wonder and bustle that was the home of the gods. Jason only hoped that it wouldn't be hard to find his destination.

A few short days ago, Jason had been nothing but another street rat hustling sailors along the ports. The dark skinned young man ran with a rather rough group ever since he had been abandoned all those years ago. But, that had all changed recently with a chance encounter.

While running from local law enforcement Jason had stumbled upon a small shop on the outskirts of the Argos docks. Inside was a rundown Oracle AI terminal which still seemed active. The unit awakened as Jason approached it and a prophecy was delivered. In order to obtain his birthright he must retrieve the golden fleece. The legendary relic needed to be found and presented to Pelias.

Everyone in Argos knew Pelias as the leader of the city state and was a particularly cruel man. He ran the area with an iron fist and taxed the population into perpetual poverty.

The AI produced a small map projector. The tiny device was a small rectangular with black metallic edges. There was a holographic data stream of purple and green that constantly ran across the surface. The oracle explained that it was a map to the fleece and Jason must seek out the assistance of the gods to begin.

Using the last of his money, Jason booked passage to Olympus and found himself in front of the office of Athena. Being in the presence of a god was intimidating as was trying to explain why she should assist him.

He told her about the AI and the fact that he was destined to retrieve the fleece. “Look, you have no reason to trust me. I’m not sure if I really believe that this whole thing is real. But, I want to see where this map leads. This could be what you are looking for as well. I can get us a crew and have a lead on a ship. What I need is funding and your blessings to get started.”

Jason took in his ragged appearance. The clothes were mismatched and barely fit and made him look like an urchin. There was no way security hadn’t flagged his criminal background and the crew he had in mind were others like him. “All I am asking for is a chance. If this turns out to be a wild bug chase, I surrender myself to whatever punishment or repayment you feel is necessary.”

Tina had so many offers come and go but nothing that caught her attention fully humans had gotten boring and even worse predictable. Even if they were predictable it was better than being stuck on Olympus dealing with Zeus. Zeus himself was quite predictable but predictable in the way that he couldn’t keep it in his pants and how he angered Hera all the time. All the humans have ideas of what she wanted but they were literally just trying to get her attention and that was even worse of a crime to her.

Boredom. Lack of proper heros. Where have all the heroes gone? She found herself longing for the days of old and sadly she didn’t have the power to turn back time but humans had evolved into something quite interesting and their love for technology was something she would’ve never predicted herself. Considering how they were in awe of fire it should’ve been surprising.

Many traveled from near and far to get her attention and it was a rare spectacle to see her let so many people through but to be quite honest most people were thrown out since they couldn’t even keep her attention long enough to hear their ideas.

A part of her was getting tired of the spectacle and her humble servants told her there was one that was last for the day she was going to turn her way but one of her secretaries told her he had been waiting for quite some time and it wouldn’t look good for her to turn away someone who came from so far.

“Fine. This one is the last I need to take my leave I am tired of the same stories and the same ideas I need something different have humans become this boring? Warriors are not being born anymore.” The goddess lamented to her people as she waved to let them know to bring him in and that she would give him a chance to plead his case.

When he was led into her office she watched him carefully and motion for him to talk and talk he did about a map and a fleece which sounded familiar but didn’t those legends die out when technology was born?

“A ship? I thought you’re kind retired those eons ago and where did you find such a map? I’m curious and you decide to come all the way up here. “ Athena looked him over especially with how he was dressed like a popper but he brought himself all the way up here sometimes humans surprised her with their conviction and beliefs. “So did you find this yourself or did someone put you up to this?” She just had to ask looking him over wondering if this was a trick from one of her siblings. She wouldn’t put it past areas to try and drag her out and do some thing that she had no business getting involved in.

What got her attention was that he would surrender himself if this was a wild buck chase and he could see how she quirked an eyebrow at him. “Surrender yourself? That is quite a lot to offer in case you’re wrong. What makes you think this is the real deal plead your case and keep me interested in perhaps I might look into this. I’m not into giving charity but what made you decide to come to me when there are so many other in the pantheon you could’ve asked why me answer that urchin.” She was curious what he would say and his answer could make or break his case especially when he already knew how fickle the gods were especially the goddess of wisdom.

“I need a hover skiff. Ah older model one not hooked into the corporate tracking system. I’m sure a navigator can be found. Whatever this fleece is, I have a feeling that it’s going to cause some problems for the corporations. We won’t be the only ones looking.”

Of course begging for help wasn’t going to work. This was not some rich philanthropist that he was working a con on, this was a literal goddess. The goddess of wisdom wasn’t going to partner with just any urchin, Jason was going to have to prove himself.

There was an extended pause as the young man took a moment to think of an answer. A man who might as well have been covered in rags stood before the divine. He needed her help and there is only one option for him. Jason was going to have to be honest and truthful. Tina was either going to help him or have him thrown out.

“No one put me up to this. Truthfully, I was running from enforcers and stumbled across the Oracle terminal. Back home I am a thief, a conman man, a thug who has literally stolen from almost everyone. But, this is a chance for me to actually do something. I don’t know if this was truly meant for me but I have stolen money before. Why, not destiny? So you can help me and have a leg up on all the other gods. Or I take my map and I go and try to appeal to one of them. I’m sure someone will be willing to take a chance on this.”

It felt weird threatening her with walking out. He didn’t really have a leg to stand on but Jason was going to stand his ground. When you have nothing to lose where was the harm in gambling with your life?

The first thing he asked for was nothing too terribly hard to get especially for someone like her. Tilting her head to the side she listened and it could not be connected to the corporate tracking system that was something super easy to do. Tina would lean over to one of her secretaries and whisper something to her before she would scurry off and start doing some thing but she made no mention about seeing if she could get something like that especially to his face.

“What makes you think that the fleece has surfaced again you’re not the only one looking what have you heard?” She finally spoke out with curiosity about the fleece that she thought was long gone and hidden in history and myth. It has been centuries before it and she didn’t think it would resurface now. When Jason said no one put him up to this that caught her attention again she honestly thought Aries was sending someone to pull her chain.

When he mentioned other guards that made her question how many had he gone to before her and that would be her next question and probably would determine what she would do for him.

“Tell me urchin. How many other gods or goddesses have you brought this to my the first one or I am I the fifth? Which one am I and trust me I can tell if you’re lying I wanna hear it from your own lips.” Athena would lean forward and place her elbows on her opulent desk watching him like a hawk wondering if he would tell the truth or try to make himself sound better. The goddess of wisdom was very big on truths and if he decide to tell the truth he will definitely get a leg up but if he would like she would throw him out.

The secretary leaving out the side was cause for concern. There were two possibilities. Option one security was on the way to throw his ass out or worse. The second was that she had already agreed to the deal and was just testing him further. He needed to play his hand as though both were actively still on the table.

“No one else,” Jason said in an almost rushed fashion. “You are my first choice. My only choice to be perfectly honest.”

There was another pause as Jason took a moment to collect his thoughts. He was learning that Athena didn’t mince words. She wanted direct thought out answers and that’s what the young man needed to offer.

“I need a partner that I can trust. As the goddess of wisdom you can see how this benefits more than just you. Any other god would see this quest as only glory for themselves. But, I believe you are different. You can see the possible future glories that may come from this.”

Jason finished his short speech with a long exhale. Back home, people responded better to actions and not words. The childhood education he had received was never really used but here in Olympus they did things differently. Much like Athens this was a place of ideas and deals. Words could be as useful or deadly as any well made dagger here.

What Jason saw was the secretary not only rush out but grab a couple others as they seemed a bit scatterbrained trying to figure out what they need to do for Athena especially since she was a type if you fucked up once she wouldn’t forget it even though she was quite forgiving she didn’t take well to mistakes. She pressed him for more answers but when he said that there was no one else that caught her attention and made her look straight at him as she began tapping her pointer finger on the desk. Even though this was a futuristic time she still wore very interesting clothing which resembles ancient Athens. That was the reason she did not spend much time walking around and talking to anyone outside of her office. Her hair up in proper waves she look like she just came down from Olympus just for this meeting.

“First choice? I like the sound of that and here I thought you were going to Aries and Hephaestus first. You do have a brain in there.” She didn’t mean to sound condescending she was truly impressed that he chose her first that using made or break an adventure. Most men would’ve gone for Aphrodite to try and use her with her art of seduction but the goddess of wisdom was a very bold choice. Jason was correct she could see what the future glories could come from this and that Intrigued her that he used his brain.

He was choosing his words quite wisely and that was saving his ass especially since he had her full attention now. “Partner? How soon do not come down from the cloud for just anyone why should I be your partner perhaps I should send you on a task first but considering this might be a quest that’s time sensitive you have my attention what would you help me do as your partner you know very well that the pantheon doesn’t come out for something so trivial. We’d like to see what you guys can do but I’ve been bored you could possibly persuade me….” she left last part open ended wondering how he would handle her and how crafty and cunning he could be with his words that’s what will win this God it’s over especially considering she’s a warrior of the mind.

Even as the others in the room began to get busy fulfilling whatever it was that Athena ordered Jason’s focus remained forward. He was being approached by a god and the moment was not lost on him. Athena’s every word held his focus even as Jason watched her approach slightly entranced by her beauty.

“There is a certain sense that could be found speaking to the god of war or smithing. But, they are also men of action choosing a direct approach to all that they do.That’s not what I need help with. I’m sure there is some great boon to have a goddess of seduction on one’s side but again that won’t help me now,” Jason paced back and forth slightly as he spoke.

“When the fleece is found it will become a matter of politics and strategy. That’s an arena where I have almost no experience. But, you are the goddess of wisdom that’s your domain to shine,” Jason said as he passed his walking and gestured a hand towards her.

“But I will not entreat you by playing on any vanity you may carry,” the young man said. “I don’t think that I could beat you in a contest. For all the things that you carry an aspect of I have no skill or knowledge in.”

Jason thought long and hard about this. He thought back to his youth when he first met Peleus who was the leader of their group back home. Jason was nothing but a street urchin begging for coins. Peleus had taken pity on the kid and played a game. A chance cube was rolled and whoever’s color appeared would get a gift from the other. To his surprise Jason had won and asked for a meal.

Peleus denied this and kept telling Jason to ask for more. Finally Peleus agreed when the young boy asked for a home.

Jason reached into the pocket of his dingy coat and pulled out a small cube. Half of the sides were purple and the other a dark crimson red. “Luck and chance are the great unifiers of the universe. We will roll the cube. If it’s purple you win and earn one request from me. If it’s red I win and you must fulfill one request that I ask.”

He held his hand out offering the cube and this game to the goddess.

Athena was interested but she was still shocked he wanted her to be his partner that was something she was not counting on. out of all the people that decided to ask for favors he was the only one that wanted her to join in and that stuck out in her mind. Most just wanted her power or her gifts and hear this interesting human really only wanted help it may be hurt by his side which definitely made him one of the more interesting candidates that she had ever seen.

Before she could continue her secretary returned with a very upgraded Hoverboard and stood by Jason as she let Athena watch and she was leaning close and whisper something but Athena didn’t think much of it. “What you requested. She’s approved of it.”was all the secretary said I should put it by her side and she will quietly move to stand right next to Athena yet again.

When he mentioned luck and chance and he pulled out a cube that got Tina’s full attention as she sat up watching him. “I I very much like games you intrigue me I’ll have you know you should play fair with me and in return I’ll play fair with you I’ll let luck and chance take its course shall we both robot or shall I be the only one rolling it?” She was throwing herself all in and this was now more interesting than what she would normally get and this time she held her hand and gave him a note to let him nof that she was accepting his challenge. Even though he held his hand out for her to take it she went up to him and placed her hand out for him to place it in her own just to see what she would do with her own words she excepted but this game now had her full attention and he had a goddess interested not only him but what he was bringing to the table.

Jason couldn’t help but chuckle as they handed him the hoverboard. He had no idea what he was supposed to do with it, but it served a valuable purpose. The fact that they could produce something like that by simply walking out of the room was that Athena and her organization had resources. There wasn’t really a plan to retrieve this golden fleece but they could definitely help him with it.

This was officially the point of no return. Once the cube was handed off, it was officially up to chance. Jason was officially gambling on his future against a god. But, in this sense they should be on equal terms. Mortal and immortal both banking on a favor from chance.

He gently layed the small cube in her hand and took a step back. “Roll the dice. Either I get a chance at my own destiny or you decide what my fate is.”

This was something she liked about this human he was shooting his shot and he wasn’t afraid or begging her for a chance she even offered a game and that caused her lips to curl up as she smirked at him when she took the dice from him. “The rules are easy enough and I give you my word I shall not shit this is on the fates and if they are in your favor you might get lucky.” She didn’t tell him how quickly they were able to get a Hoverboard but she had her own connections and being a deity of course she had so many things at her fingertips and her following knew exactly how to get their hands on it.

She brought her hand up to her lips and blue on the die giving it her own charm or luck before she would shake it gently and roll it. Going between red and purple and red and purple it looks like it could be anyone’s game. It was very true that no matter what happened something interesting was going to come from this and when the dice finally stopped she looked perplexed and the way it’s tied up on a corner not deciding a color made her look worried and then she looked over at Jason before she looked back at the dice and it rolled red.

“Hmm… it seems like the fates might actually like you and they are giving me a hard time did you see what that just did? That was a rare occurrence. I guess you win the question is how do you want to go about this?” She could join his quest or he could ask for anything he wanted but right now she would not argue against what the fates decided and it shows him and now her own fate was in this humans hands.

There was a loud and almost drawn out sigh of relief as the chance cube played out in Jason’s favor. This was more than a win. This was his chance at finally escaping his shit life and building something grander.

He walked over and picked up the cube. With a smile the small object was placed back into his pocket. With what happened just now there was no way this dice was ever leaving his side again.

“If this is going to happen, it will be as partners. I recognize your position but I do not work for you. Both of us make the decisions and decide how things happen. What I am trying to say is ,you should come with me. I don’t know how long it's been since you left Olympus but I could use your help on this one.” The last sentence was punctuated with him pointing between the pair.

“To start though, we are going to have to put together a crew. Most importantly we are going to need someone who can read the map and guide us.”

These old holo maps could be tricky to interpret and there were few in the world who were still in the business of working with them. One of the reasons Jason had chosen Athena is because she would understand the need to be careful and find the right people for this job.

When he took that long drawn out sigh Athena understood he might have bern worried. Most humans got really anxious around the gods especially being face-to-face with one of them. “I was not going to kill you if you lost you can relax.” She wasn’t sure how he would take that but she spoke freely.

Allowing him to retrieve the dice and put it in his pocket she didn’t say anything as she watched him carefully and quietly. “Partners? No this is a first I’ve worked with many humans but I’ve never been asked to be a partner. I Was usually the help and watched from the sidelines. Either way I guess I’m excited for something new it’s been a while since I came down from Olympus.” She listen to him more as he mentioned a crew and she put her hand out as she spoke and gave her opinion.

“I Will trust your judgment especially since you want I’ll leave the crew team besides I’m curious how this is going to turn out partner.” Athena was giving him so much leeway but when he mentioned someone to read the map she brought her hand back and put her index finger to her lips.

“So i’ll be in charge of picking out anyone that I know and I know quite a few people who could read a map and get us through that do you trust my judgment?” She asked wondering if he would say yes or no but since they were partners she’s gonna run everything by him since it’s been a while since she worked this closely with a human. “ when will he start this mission partner?” Perhaps she was saying it too much but she found it quite amusing that she had partnered with him but the fates had decided this was what she should do and luckily he’s chosen Athena especially since she was one of the more trustworthy goddesses in the pantheon.

“Death is not what concerns me,” he said, staring at Athena. “Hades will claim my soul when that time comes. But, I’d rather it be after I have had a chance to make my life matter.”

Jason offered her a polite smile. “You are the goddess of wisdom. Who am I to deny your choice? I’ll leave the map reading up to you,” He took a step forward and grabbed the map from the table. “But a wise man does not leave the chips on the table. I’ll hold on to this until we are on our way.”

He slowly backed towards the office door making sure no one was making a move to stop him. “I’m going to find us some help. I will return in a few hours.”

There was an overwhelming sense of relief as he stepped out of Athena’s headquarters. He couldn’t help but cheer and fist bump the air in celebration. Things were going well and the chance for glory was almost obtainable. Right now, he needed a crew and one that he could trust. In cases like this loyalty could be found where the refuse was kept.

Anyone in the main city would be loyal to any of the gods or willing to switch sides for the slightest favor. Jason would find others like himself, those whom the gods seemingly forgot. Those who would pledge themselves to the first person to offer them a chance for something greater.

He remembered a small tavern near the station where he was dropped off at. That would be the perfect place to start.

When he said that’s not concern him she shot him a look which is quite incredulous but he now Intrigued her that much further.”Death May not concern you but please realize even I can’t call you from the underworld that is not my domain so I will say don’t die before your quest is finished especially since I can do nothing to get you from the grasp of Hades.” Her words were always wise but she meant that and she hoped he took it to heart.

Would be easy but hearing that he trusted her choices she like to hear that most men who decided to work with her decided to pull all the strings and she would just watch as they either failed or succeeded but mostly failed. Jason would not have to worry about anyone trying to stop him Athena was not that kind of goddess he was able to move freely while everyone else either fast about Tina or were doing their own thing. There was no trickery with this goddess.

Once he stepped out of the office things were set into motion. The commotion in the office easily notice from the outside and Jason probably noticed how all of her followers were scurrying around. She had a job to do and that job is to find people to help read the map and she was not gonna back out of that challenge.

When Jason would head to the Tavern little did he know that I think I would have someone looking there too but it wouldn’t be for him it would be for someone for the map but he at least we have a front row seat to see how she would pull the strings on the phone with puppets she needed for this adventure.

The room could only be described as rowdy. Everyone was shouting over the other trying to get their word in edgewise. A few people in the corner were shoving each other obviously displeased about whatever card game had been going on beforehand. There were a few scantily clad women off to the side looking for their marks for the evening. One of them blew Jason a kiss.

He started to walk up towards her before remembering that this was a business trip. Pushing his way up to the bar Jason was able to flag down the bartender. A large heavily tattooed man looked down at the newcomer. His right eye was artificially with a dark red glow emanating behind the thick lens. “What do you want,?” he asked.

“I’m looking for a crew,” the younger adventurer said. “I’m going on a quest and need to put together a team.” Jason only hoped that the stories of all men craving adventure were true. Otherwise he was about to look like a real jackass.

The bartender laughed and then continued to laugh. The laugh went on for almost a full minute with Jason standing awkwardly by. “Sorry kid but you are a sad choice for a hero.”

“Well that’s your opinion,” Jason started to argue before being cut off.

“Look if you need a crew you need to convince a real hero to help you out. No one is going to take you seriously,” the bartender explained pouring an amber colored liquid into a small glass. He handed glass to Jason and pointed to a right hand corner of the bar.

Jason looked and saw the card table where the fight was going on. “The winner of that fight is the man you want to talk to. Give him this drink and hopefully he will listen.”

With a nod and smile, Jason grabbed the drink and began marching over. But, was forced to duck as one of the men was thrown over his head.

A loud bellowing voice came from the remains of the table. Standing utop the shattered remnants stood a man who could only be described as pure muscle. “Who else wishes to challenge the great Hercules!?”
