Derek stood out on the port dock with his wife, Raven, as she stood to see him off for his mission. He and his regiment had been tasked to scout out an area overseas, and it was projected that he'd be gone for a few months. He hated to do this to her, leaving her always broke his heart, but it kept her to the life he thought she deserved.
"I'll be back before you know it." He told her gently before he tilted her chin up gently, "I promise, ok?"

She nodded, struggling to hold back tears as she held onto him. “Just come home..” she said,

He smiled softly, trying to be equally as brave, holding her tight, "Of course, baby...nothin's gonna keep me from you.."

Derek awoke with a start, gasping loudly as he looked around before laying back down. That was right, he was still on the ship. Everything was cold, and not even his cot offered him comfort. It had been years since he had set out; his regiment had landed weeks after they had set off and they had found an odd and old artifact deep in a cave. Had he known what it was, he would have ordered everyone to leave and call the mission a failure. But it was far too late for that now, and now he and his men were bound for God knew how long to their ship and the area. He hadn't seen Raven since, but continued to keep in contact with the help of some magical familiars; it helped get mail across the sea.
Every year, he felt a tug back to land, but never knew how or why. He missed her, and wanted to see her. Maybe that's all it was.

It was almost like a weight lifted from him. One day, every year, almost like there was a pattern.

Their communications were growing heavy with longing, both of them begrudgingly coming to terms with their new arrangements.

He hated to be away from her, feeling like the promise he had made had been broken years ago when he became cursed. He just hoped that this new life didn't ruin things too much for them. He didn't know what he would do if he lost her.

She missed him so much that initially, she was unable to get out of bed. He hadn’t dies, but this was a fate almost worse.

The day crawled by, as it normally did, the house quiet and almost cold as she went about her day. She was doing her normal chores when she heard the lock to the front door click.

She looked up. Alarm hit her, what was happening? She grabbed the nearest heavy object and waited by the door. No one should be coming to see her.

The door pushed open and a familiar head of red hair popped into view.
"Raven?" Derek called. Was it really that time already?

He turned and smiled, laughing as he scooped her up, "Don't tell me you were finally going to take me out~" He teased.

He returned each kiss, feeling a spark with each one; enjoying the warmth of her against him like it was the sun against his skin.

She held onto him, her grip tight, but not tight enough to hurt. She giggled and held back small sobs of joy, refusing to let go.
