Name: Andrew MacDonald
Age: 25
Gender/identity: Male
Appearance: Andrew is a bit shorter than most men, and a little bit chubby. He tends to wear Hawaiian shirts and shorts.
Skills: Computer knowledge, fishing
Personality: A quiet, shy young man, Andrew finds it difficult being with people, and this often manifests as a certain level of anxiety. He likes being around animals, and often talks to them when nobody else is around. Andrew cares strongly for his family, to the point that some might call him a "mama's boy". While normally very quiet, he can lose his temper, and will say things he'll regret later.
Likes: Computers, video games, animals, rock/metal music
Dislikes: Large groups/crowds, people who mistreat animals
Fears: Being forgotten, losing his family
Backstory: Andrew comes from a broken family, and sought shelter from the problems in his life in books, movies, and video games. While incredibly intelligent, he would often get in trouble in his younger days due to his temper and his penchant for skipping school. He did graduate on time, but only after cramming two years' worth of schooling into one. After high school he tried college, but dropped out, and found himself working full time. He managed to make a few friends, but never had much of a social life. His friend, Erika, talked him into going on a day of sailing with her college friends and associates.

Name: Erika Mineuchi
Age: 27
Gender/identity: Female
Appearance: Erika is of a petite build, standing just over five feet tall. Though she takes after her father's side in terms of appearance, she is half Caucasian.
Skills: Evolutionary biology
Personality: Quiet, calm, and sarcastic. Erika often holds people at arm's length, and tries not to get close to others. The one exception is Andrew, who she has been friends with for years. She often looks at the world through a logical, analytic lens, and tries to keep emotions out of her decisions as much as possible.
Likes: Movies, music, animals (aside from a few)
Dislikes: People who are arrogant, plans not going right
Fears: Animals like rodents and snakes, tight spaces
Backstory: The daughter of a Japanese national and an American airwoman, Erika has always seen the world from a slightly different perspective than most Americans. Bullied when she was younger, and had only a few friends, including one Andrew MacDonald. She was always had high grades in school, and she excelled in science and biology. This led her to become invested in the field of evolutionary biology, and she has always had a keen fascination with dinosaurs. She's spending a day sailing with her friends.

Name: Cat Morgan
Age: 22
Gender/identity: Female
Appearance: Slightly shorter than average and well endowed, with a fierce energy and rough around the edges walk and talk that makes her seem bigger than she is.
Skills: graphic design, flexible morality, dirty fighting
Personality: Cat is bold to a fault, picking fights, men and activities with little thought and a lot of bluster. She's always trying to goad any situation into it's most interesting version, and doesn't take much seriously; which hasn't caught up with her yet.
Likes: Moshing, talking big, sex, attention
Dislikes: boredom, rich kids, cops
Fears: Being under someone's control, addiction, getting in over her head
Backstory: Cat got smacked around a lot by her parents, but she isn't sure if that's normal or not, and doesn't think about it much. She doesn't think about much if she can help it – always bored, always angry, always looking for something to make her feel. She often thinks she would have made a better boy, but she likes being a woman. She rightly suspects her friends don't know a lot about her – how many people have hit her, how many people she has hit, how she smashed up and lit her exes car on fire, how she kicked speed before she was 18. How angry she is, ultimately, when she runs out of fun to distract her. In the end, she has to rely on herself to get her out of the trouble she gets herself into, and she is pretty good at it.

Name: Grace Hansen
Age: 24
Gender/identity: Female
Appearance: Average height and build, pale and with a selection of tattoos
Skills: Zoology, animal behavior
Personality: Grace is confident and intelligent in an academic sense, but isn't great with people – she's dressed for a good time tonight, but already regretting the skirt. She loves animals, both as cute fluffballs and as something to study.
Likes: Animals, good books, a quiet night in
Dislikes: Loudmouths, being hit on, laugh tracks
Fears: She has a morbid fear of dying, and of any kind of failure.
Backstory: Grace grew up nerdy and quiet, reading stories and raising a series of small animals, more interested in her books and pets than people. As she bloomed into an attractive woman, she became more confident, but not much better at actually reading people. More weird than wild, she got the tattoos and rocker look, but still kept mostly at home and with her books, studying animal behavior and going to college with only a string of short term boyfriends and few lasting friendships, Cat being the newest. Which brings her to her biggest regret of the evening, Cat pressuring her into wearing that skirt, the one she never actually dares to wear outside. But Cat is always doing things like that.

Name: Lara Rojas
Age: 20
Gender/identity: Female
Appearance: A sporty, baby faced Hispanic woman of average height and muscular build
Skills: climbing, fencing, athletics, women's studies
Personality: a passionate advocate for her views, talkative and quick to get heated
Likes: Exercise, feminism, communism, fencing
Dislikes: conservatives, religion, misogyny
Fears: kidnapping, dark alleys, spiders
Backstory: Lara came from a conservative catholic family, which disowned her immediately upon finding out she was gay at age 15. Since then she has had to fight for everything, and she has succeeded admirably. She has a full fencing scholarship, she is an up and coming rock climber, she does well in her studies, and she is driven to win at all costs. There is a trace of rebellion from her background to her, but it isn't thoughtless rebellion. She is smart and driven, and she can speak to every cause and ideal she holds. There's always some new cause or goal to consume her, but for now she's hoping one of the ladies on this cruise might distract her for awhile.

Erika's body felt like it was on fire. It had been almost an hour since the storm had subsided, and double that since the storm had disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. She replayed what had happened in her mind: it was supposed to be a day of fun out on the ocean. A sailboat, some friends, and a fair amount of alcohol. But the storm... that damned storm had come from nowhere. The boat had struck something--a reef, a rocky outcropping--and began sinking. The group had panicked and bailed.

Now they were on a rocky beach, soaking wet. More likely than not, they had found their way to an island. Looking deeper into the trees, it reminded Erika of the redwood forests back on the mainland. A young man slogged his way out of the surf. More than anything he looked like a giant teddy bear that had been put through the wash; how he still had his glasses was beyond Erika, but it was helpful nonetheless.

"You okay, Andrew?" she asked. The young man gave a hard cough, expelling water.

"'Bout as good as can be expected," he answered. Andrew sank down to his knees on the rocks. Odds were he was absolutely exhausted. He wasn't in the best shape, but at least he could swim well enough. Erika glanced to the left and right, trying to see if the others had made it to shore as well.

Cat stands with her hands on her thighs, panting. Water was washing over her feet, but she was out of the real ocean, finally. Just her luck, her leisure cruise sank and tried to kill her. She stood taller and stretched her aching muscles, looking up and down the beach. Far to her left she could see someone on the beach, and someone else seemed to be joining her from the water. But there was a lot of beach between them... the walk wasn't hard, but the lack of people on that beach twisted her stomach. There had been a lot of people on that boat, and this is the closest place she could think of they might swim. If they were in swimming shape. She'd had friends on that boat. Not that it was her job to watch them, but still.

She started walking down the beach towards the others, looking around. She wanted roads, piers, power lines, shit she wasn't seeing. Just big useless trees. It was then that she spotted someone in the water, between her and the others - no, two someone's. It wasn't clear what was happening at first, but as they came closer it became clearer... One girl was half swimming, half being towed to shore, while the other helped pull her in with strong, easy strokes. As they came closer, she sighed and waded in, letting the stronger swimmer pull the other to her. She was exhausted, but at least she was in better shape than these two. The swimmer collapsed on the beach, breathing ragged as Cat pulled a coughing, half drowned goth looking girl onto the beach.

Cat was surprised either of them had made it. The girl in black was retching seawater onto the beach, and looked like she outweighed the gal who'd towed her in by a good margin. The swimmer was exhausted, her eyes closed as she lay back on the beach. Neither of them looked in shape to talk yet, so she looked towards the other two, still a brisk walk down the beach. She thought about running to get them, but it didn't seem like a great use of energy to run there and back. Instead she waved at the couple, motioning for them to come her way.

Erika could see a few more figures down the beach. One was waving them closer. "Well, we're not alone," she said. Andrew nodded and rose to his feet with a groan.

"God, I knew I should have stayed home," he grumbled. "I could be comfy on my futon playing Halo right now."

"Look at it this way." Erika started leading towards the small group. "If you get out of this, you'll have quite the story to tell your grandchildren."

Andrew chuckled. "You're being way too optimistic," he said. He followed behind Erika. She just wanted to get him into a positive mindset, since that would only help them in their situation. "This is the last time I let you talk me into shit like this." The two drew closer to the group, and Erika could make out more of their features. All women. Each one of them was soaked.

"You guys okay?" Erika asked them.

Lara laid on the ground with her eyes closed, feeling her breath steady slowly and the pain slowly fade from her knotted muscles. She was listening to the woman she'd been dragging for what felt like an eternity apologize profusely as she pulled off her boots and shook the water out. If the woman didn't already seem so embarrassed and ashamed at the trouble Lara had gone through to get her ashore, Lara might have taken the time to point out ditching the boots in the ocean would probably have helped. As she raised herself up, she noticed the other two women looking towards a couple walking down the beach. Lara was too tired to watch them make it over, and spent the time stretching her limbs and twisting her torso to limber back up.

By the time Erika arrived and asked how they were doing, Lara was starting to feel a little bit like a person again. She was sitting cross legged and smiled at the new pair, waving with a wince. "I'm alive." she said, realizing as she said it that was usually a joke might be less appropriate considering how many people might be dead. The other women nodded to the question, the brunette adding "Thanks to her" and pointing to Lara with a grateful look that brought a little warmth to Lara's belly.

"I saw her a ways out... I didn't see anyone else, but they might be out there. Has anyone been watching the water?" She started to stand up, wincing as she did so. "Where are we?"

Erika shook her head. "We haven't been looking," she answered bluntly. Andrew nodded in agreement before turning to look at the tree line.

"Well at the very least we're going to die somewhere pretty," he commented. Erika elbowed him in the ribs.

"Okay, we need to take stock of our situation," she said. "We're likely on an island. If there's plant life like we see back on the mainland, then we likely don't need to worry about water." Erika took a moment to survey the small group. "Does anyone have any injuries? We should take care of that before anything else."

Grace stands, wincing slightly as she takes a few steps. "I think I hurt my ankle, getting off the boat... but it isn't too bad?" She starts walking in a circle, experimentally. "I think I'm ok." Though she is definitely limping, she can walk. "My boots have heels... they're not great for hiking." She looks out into the forest warily. "But barefoot doesn't sound great either. I didn't know I'd be going out in the field today."

Lara begins stretching her legs, then her back and arms, concentrating on the way her body moves. "You should be looking. And we are NOT dying." She says, rolling her head on her neck. "I'm fine. I'm tired, but nothing is hurt." Cat shrugs, raising her shirt and showing a nasty scrape down her right side, some minor cuts on that sides arm. "Helped keep me awake in the seawater. Nothing to worry about, nothing too deep. Banged into something in the water pretty good."

Grace looks around the group, thinking. "Does anyone have their phone? Mine was in my purse...". Lara shakes her head, patting the empty pocket on her leggings, while Cat pulls a sour face, remembering abandoning her leather jacket in the ocean.
