Come and See
1985
Directed By Elem Klimov
I'm not a professional reviewer, nor will I pretend to be. Hell, I'm not even someone who particularly
likes movies
. But that's a personal issue, and it has more to do with my personal perception of time than anything else. But Come and See is a film that I
needed to see. I don't think it's a film that
everyone needs to see, but it's a reality that
many need to
understand. Having read reviews of it, the general consensus leaned heavily toward it being a worthwhile watch, and it
was. That's not to say it was good, because it
wasn't. I don't think this is a movie you can say you truly enjoyed, as there's nothing enjoyable about it. From the first moment, you're faced with the harsh reality of war, of
children worming their way toward combat, and of men that are too old and tired to stop them. Childhood bravery and pride turns to fear and
anger. Comfort turns to
aggression. Humanity turns to
nothing.
The movie is disjointed, confusing, and uncomfortable. It's so painfully uncomfortable. There are long stretches where nothing is said; and a character simply stares at the camera. At times, it felt like they weren't even acting. It was as if they were truly there,
forcing you to wade through their misery. The scenery is beautiful, otherworldly,
surreal in a sense, but there's no time to enjoy it, no
reason to admire it, as it's fleeting. It's there, and then it's gone. Burned to ash, returned to nature. Forgotten.
I won't spoil the ending, the plot, or truly anything beyond the words I've written here. It's something that you should go into blind. Form your own opinions. Your own thoughts. Your own conclusions on what things mean, or why they are the way they
are. Understand that this is not a movie you will watch, and forget in a day or two. This isn't something you can just throw on in the background. This isn't something to watch with the family. This movie
demands your attention, your respect, and your
understanding. And frankly? It
deserves it.
