One of my passions is the martial arts. I first developed an interest in it around age five when I watched Walker, Texas Ranger. I loved seeing bad guys get the crap kicked out of them. With Chuck Norris being a World Karate Champion, I assumed he was doing Karate. As it turned out, he was actually doing Tang Soo Do, which is a Korean martial art that resembles Karate. I was also a fan of The Karate Kid, which actually does feature real Okinawan Karate (though the crane stance kick is, of course, pure Hollywood bullshit, though very iconic and entertaining).
I started doing Okinawan Karate when I was a junior in high school. I started with Shorin Ryu and later left that dojo when my sensei turned out to be a lot like Kreese lol. My second sensei was more like Mr. Miyagi and taught Naha Te. Sadly, with high school graduation and college on the horizon, I didn't get to train very long. I got about a solid year and moved from a white belt to a yellow belt. I advanced two ranks, so not very high. My system went white-yellow-green-brown-black. I wish I had started younger, but I didn't and will always regret that.
I always had an interest in Muay Thai and got a single lesson in last year. My Karate training actually helped quite a bit in picking it up. Unfortunately, transportation and money issues made further lessons impossible. As a result of not a lot of time to formally learn, I've taught myself several techniques from online sources. I taught myself a wrestling takedown, for example. I don't know much ground game, so that's definitely a weakness in my fighting that I need to fix.
I watch a lot of MMA like UFC events as well as shows like Cobra Kai and martial arts anime like Baki and Kengan Ashura. I pick up lots of techniques that way and combine it with what I know. The martial arts is empowering and gives me confidence. I never liked sports but do love me some martial arts. I love to write it, and doing so helps keep me sharp with it. It's a form of training.
Anyway, that's enough about me. Feel free to share your own martial arts stories and,/or experiences. Feel free to talk about MMA and other combat sports. Feel free to ask questions. Feel free to drop sexy pictures of a martial arts nature. This is a place for all lovers of combat.
