𝐑iveria was the only underwater kingdom since the dawn of time . sirens had come together from all over the world . riveria was far from where any humans and other land creatures could seek them out . anemone was glad to be born during a time of peace , and not war like the previous generations had known . she made her way through the square , slowly weaving in and out of traffic . it was a slow day in the city , everyone was doing their own thing during the weekdays . school , teaching , working , running their stores . she rarely had anything to do these days . she finished school and was trying to figure out what she wanted to do career wise . the queen had ruled long ago that each siren take a year to do what they wanted after school before they settled down , found a career , and started a family . anemone hummed under her breath . she was finally out of the city and leaving through the gates . the ocean was a dangerous place to live , but up on land was so much more so . going up on land or breaking the surface was against protocol . for fear of angering the queen , many of them did not venture beyond the castle walls . anemone was not one of those . as a young siren she would swim around , marking the places she had visited . once , when she was brave enough , she found a small island . it was located a little closer to the main land , something that would surely not go unpunished had anyone found out . the siren made her way to that destination , her excitement growing like it always did anytime she ventured out . she pictured the beautiful palm trees swaying gently as the breeze , with a hint of the salt water scent , blew through the branches . that was where she had tasted her first coconut , the first " human " delicacy she had . one day while she wandered around she had found a cove that seemed to stretch on for miles . it was dark and cold when you first entered . as you got closer to the end it was suddenly lit up by sunlight which bounced off the crystals embedded into the cave walls . it created a beautiful effect throughout the area . by this time the water was up to one's ankles . the crystal blue water was so clear you could see the beautiful foreign fish dart in and out of the kelp . the water seemed to have an almost sweet taste to it . in the middle was a small , sandy area where she would climb up and just relax in the sun , oftentimes take a nap . on her way to her special place , anemone felt a shadow cast over her . she looked up , her hair swaying around her face at the sudden movement . it was a boat and a rather large one ! what was it doing in this area ? in all her years she had never seen a human in this area . the feeling of fear filled her chest and chills were sent down her spine to the time of her tail . this was a bigger ship than the fishing boats she was accustomed to . despite the law of not interacting with humans , anemone had made a few human friends after she came across their fishing spots . they seemed nice enough and would talk to her about their struggles in their kingdom such as a thing called taxes . the siren , feeling pity on them , gifted them her pearl necklace and sometimes would bring up small treasures to help them with their situation . just as she was about to turn around and flee , she heart a splash . a human had fallen in . she watched as he struggled to get to the surface against the current . he didn't seem to need help . the man was quite a strong swimmer despite only having the power of his legs and arms . anemone slowly swam backwards , curious to see what he would do but also not wanting to be seen . in that moment a large tentacle from the dark , grasping his legs and pulling him down deeper and deeper until he was almost on her level . anemone panicked . she completely forgot about nigall , the large octupus who hunted around this area . he was a friend to her , but his hatred for humans was deadly . " nigall , don't ! " she screamed , swimming over to them as fast as she could . he looked at her , both eyes blinking separately as he glared at her . " don't eat him , he didn't do anything wrong ! " she stated , grabbing the human's arms despite nigall squeezing tighter . they stared at each other , the monster finally letting go . when he had met the siren he was filled with anger and sadness for the wrongs that was committed against him by the humans . he admittedly was depressed and took it out on anyone he could , resulting in not having any fellow underwater friends . until she had come along . her spunkiness and calm demeanor was something he needed . nigall would often talk of what he would do if he found a human and it involved nothing good . anemone had taught him to soften his heart . " you know , the humans that did that to you aren't even alive anymore . " she would say , often trailing her fingers over his scars that covered his slimy body . " don't punish those who didn't harm you . " nigall 's eyes filled with sadness before he disappeared further into the dark . the siren wanted to go after him , cheer him up for she could feel the sadness oozing off him . but she had to help this drowning creature before it was too late . with a powerful flick , she ascended to the surface . the boat was yard away , sailing closer to the main land . she was safe from human eyes at least . the island wasn't that far away and she swam fast , making sure to keep the human's head above the water . anemone made it to the cove . she transformed into her human form and started dragging the man to the sandy area . it was a struggle . this man was two times the size of her human form . ripping his shirt off , she gave his chest a good few smacks before he started coughing up the sea water from his lungs .​

" - bring her back to me . i'm getting tired of the stories of her granting them wishes like a genie . " leander nodded his head to show agreement . the knight made sure to say little to nothing these days . he wasn't sure who he could trust after a secret was shared with him . a life changing secret . he thought back to just a few days ago when his life changed . he couldn't tell if it was for the better or for the worse . it was a beautiful wednesday afternoon . the sun was slowly falling in the distance , the light pink sunset gleaming across the water . his adopted sister marigold had made a new friend a few weeks ago and they often would visit her small fishing town . it was a cute home , just off the coast line . it was a little further away from the town . in that spot you didn't hear the hustle and bustle of every day life . instead , it was more common to hear the crash of waves , the seagulls squawking , and the murmur of small conversations the fisher men would have . now living in the castle as commander over the king's army , he sometimes missed the small village life . they made their way down and found her absent from her home . marigold was confused , pleading with her older brother to search for the dear blonde . " something bad could have happened ! " they had looked around and then headed to a small body of water . as they approached , they both witnessed mazarine pull herself out of the water . her lower half had a scaly tail , glimmering different shades of blue when the light hit it . leander remembered the feeling of all blood rushing out of his head . just now his ears reddened at the memory . the young woman , not noticing they were watching , watched as she transformed back into the familiar form . the anger that filled his chest as he had watched the creature , the same species that caused a ship that was carrying his parents to wreck . marigold was ecstatic to learn of mazarine's secret . leander snapped back to the present . he had learned the art of dissociation when cedric went into his little rants . he was a wonderful king who really cared about his people . his problem was he didn't trust magical beings . " don't worry , your highness , " leander heard himself said , his deep voice somewhat echoing in the small meeting room . " we'll bring her back alive , with the location of their home . " with that , they went their separate ways . it was time to ready the ship . after the events on wednesday , the knight had informed the king of what had happened . his argument was it would have been considered treason if he hadn't reported it . he knew the king requested to meet with mazarine to offer her whatever she wanted in exchange for the coordinates of her old kingdom . the king mentioned all she wanted was peace between the two , which was a surprise to both of them . she didn't ask for riches or a higher station in court . she wanted a peace . leander remembered thinking she was a fool , felt guilty , then remembered who she was . or more like what she was . in a few short hours , he set off to the village to meet mazarine . there they would board the small ship that would take them to the nest of vile creatures . " pleaseeee , please , please ! i want to come with you , " marigold had whined that morning after he told her the plans to go offer a peace treaty to the queen of sirens . leander didn't want to tell his dear , innocent sister of the real plans . she would have tried to put a stop to it and he wasn't fond of the thought of the pain the king would inflict on her . he would do anything for the young woman , having practically raised her himself . " you can't go and that's final , " the knight had said , firmly . generally at this tone she knew not to push it but a mermaid's nest ! she couldn't believe it ! all the stories the fishermen told her were actually real . marigold was often times picked on for wanting to believe that magic actually existed . she assisted with packing , hoping these little acts would change his mind . it didn't work . she sat on the bed , a pout on her lips . this was something she wanted so badly . he stopped and grabbed her face with his tan hands , planting a gentle kiss on her forehead after seeing tears well up in her eyes . " please , " she whispered. " i rarely ask anything from you . " it was true , but yet he couldn't let her come . he wasn't about to put his sister in danger . " how about after all of this is over , if they even accept the peace treaty , i'll take you to see them . " marigold seemed to like that answer and chirped up . " would we be able to go with mazarine ? " the young girl requested . his lips settled in a thin line at the thought of having to be near her , in her presence for however long it took to locate the kingdom . in the end , he nodded , his curly hair swaying from the motion . with a scream , she threw her arms around her brother , squeezing the air out of his body at her excitement . the guilt started to form , but he pushed it to the back of his mind . instead , he smiled and hugged his sister tightly . the carriage came to a holt in front of a familiar building . he opened the door and stepped outside , noticing mazarine standing nearby , waiting to board the ship . leander took a deep breath and walked forward , purpose in his stride .​
