I finished watching UBW Abridged the other day (what's available of it, anyway), and it's rekindled my Fate flame a bit, so I figured I'd give this another shot. I have a clever idea, ladies, gents, and everyone in between and outside the binary. At least, I think it's clever. Hopefully, you will too.
The plot: the Fifth Holy Grail War with a time-looping twist!
The time loop is, on the surface, exactly what it says on the tin; once the war comes to a close, time rewinds back to the start. For simplicity's sake, let's say it turns back the clock to Rin's summoning ritual, a minute or two before she begins her incantation. Everything is reset. Anyone who died is alive again, all battles that were fought haven't yet happened, any and all memories of the war that has already taken place are erased, and any feelings that might have developed are, sadly, forgotten. For the first loop or two, nobody notices anything is wrong. They have no recollection whatsoever of anything that happened the last time around, and all proceeds exactly as a Holy Grail War should and always does; there's no reason the exact chain of events has to be the same every time, mind you, each loop can have things happen differently in terms of who fights whom and the order of confrontations, interpersonal interactions and events, and anything and everything else. Whatever the case, no one remembers anything at first.
After a couple of loops, though, things start to seem off. Episodes of deja vu, conversations that one or both parties are sure they've had before, predicting the opponent's next several moves down to the slightest motion, having knowledge of things they have no business knowing. The memory erasure begins to decrease in effectiveness with every loop after that. The first memories that linger are fractured and unclear, but they start remembering things with more clarity as the war continues to repeat itself. Something isn't right in Fuyuki, and Tohsaka Rin, for one, intends to find out what.
The rewinding is, of course, caused by the only thing that could possibly be powerful enough to pull off such large-scale magic. This idea would require at least a sliver of self-awareness on the part of the Grail, but from what I can gather it's actually somewhat unclear as to whether it canonically has any consciousness or not, so if that's the case, it may not even be particularly canon-noncompliant to have it act according to its own will. As for the why of it, that's to be determined; maybe it doesn't like the outcomes it keeps getting, maybe it's trying to force a specific event, or, failing any legitimate ideas, it can just be handwaved, since the reason ultimately isn't that important to the plot.
I'm specifically looking for an Archer for my Rin; I'll happily play Saber/Artoria in a Saber x Shirou pairing as well as, but not instead of, Rin x Archer. I would actually prefer both, truth be told, but if I had to pick only one of these girls to play, it would be Rin. So, just to make it crystal clear, I will play Saber, but only if I get my Archer for Rin. You can have just Rin or you can have Rin and Saber, but you can't have just Saber. I also won't play either of them against other characters; it's Rin and Saber for Archer and Shirou, respectively. Not negotiable. If you're not interested in playing either of them, this ain't for you. No OCs either. This is a strictly canon x canon story.
