Bellisarius and Taran stood on the ramparts of the castle. It was a wide open space that was perfect for settling things between them. Taran had hoped that he could convince his old friend to reject the Grand Fist and join forces with him. Bellisarius, however, was never going to do that. He could not and would not forgive Taran for what he had done. His only goal was to kill the traitor before he hurt even more people.

"Taran, before I kill you, I want to know how Cassandra and Haley died."

A look of genuine sadness passed in the eyes of his old friend.

"It is not I who will die this day, but I will tell you."

Taran explained how Haley died while shielding him from the attack of a Grandmaster. Cassandra accidentally fell from a cliff while fighting with Taran. Bellisarius hung his head and shook it in sadness.

"You absolute fool. If not for you, none of this would have ever happened."

"The Grand Fist had to fall. I hate that it cost us our wives, but I have no regrets."

Bellisarius lifted his head and assumed his fighting stance.

"I won't make Haley wait for you much longer."

Realizing that there was nothing left to say, Taran eased into his own fighting stance. The two began to circle each other. They were both looking for weaknesses and openings. Now that Bellisarius was calm, he believed that his skill would equal Taran's. His foe also realized this and was not rushing in for an attack. This would be a fight to the death and both of them knew it.

Bellisarius took the initiative and jabbed with a few spear hand strikes. Taran used head movement to dodge them and returned fire with a few of his own. The two circled each other again. Another round of jabs followed with neither making contact. As they circled each other again, Bellisarius realized that he would need to get creative. Fighting too traditionally would never work against a fellow highly-skilled master like Taran.

This time, he jabbed twice with spear hands before suddenly lashing out with an outside leg kick. Taran was both surprised and thrown off balance. Bellisarius attempted to take advantage of the moment by throwing a head kick. His opponent ducked under it but was only able to regain his balance. Taran grimaced, annoyed that he had missed a perfect opportunity to counter. Bellisarius was as cunning as ever.

Now that Taran was on guard for the leg kicks, though, it was much harder to create an opening. Bellisarius mixed up his punches and kicks, delivering up to four strikes in combination. With absolute poise, however, Taran dodged them all. Once more, he would have to get creative. Bellisarius jabbed with a spear hand thrust before immediately delivering a roundhouse chop with the same hand. His opponent caught it flush before he was knocked backward by Bellisarius' follow up switch kick to the liver.

Taran dropped to one knee and used White Shove to keep Bellisarius off of him. That liver kick had hurt like hell and he would no doubt be dead right now if not for his White Fist mastery. Bellisarius was too talented of a striker to stay on the defensive with. Taran got to his feet and went on the offensive with a lunging kick. Once he was in range, he let loose with a flurry of spear hand thrusts. Bellisarius could not dodge them all, but he ensured that none of them would strike flush.

Taran stayed close to Bellisarius to keep him from throwing another switch kick. If he took another hard shot to the liver like that, he was done for. Watching out for knee strikes and spear hand thrusts, he grabbed Bellisarius and put him in a single-armed clinch. Activating the Black Spear, he planned to run him through. Bellisarius countered with his own White Shove, forcing him back. Taran was a specialist at in-fighting, and so he knew that he couldn't give him a chance to work his dangerous clinch game.

The two eased back into their stances and began circling each other again. Bellisarius had great long-range weapons, but the leg and switch kicks were not going to work again. Taran had lethal short-range weapons, but his clinch wasn't going to be effective a second time. To break the stalemate, both activated Black Spears and rushed each other. Their techniques collided with force and sparks. Bellisarius and Taran pushed against each other, each determined to break through and kill the other.
