Fire.
Though it danced in almost every home. In every hearth or lantern, commonplace, unremarkable.
It wasn't something one had call to give great consideration to in most days.
This wasn't most days.
All around, the night air was shaken from its peacefulness by the screams of women and children. Somewhere in the distance, a man could be clearly heard bellowing out in alarm which soon was followed by more and move voices rising in alarm. And beneath all of that, the roar of fire. Fire which licked across thatched roofs and crawled over wooden walls. Burning fingers of cinder and ash snaking over anything it could find in desire to feed. To spread. It moved like a living thing. Angry. Vicious, and hungry.
And seeing it unleashed like this, it was easy to see why, even in the deep chill of the far north. Even against the time and cost, his childhood home and all those around it were built in stone. Stone was cold and uncomfortable. But stone cared not for fire. Stone did not alight while those inside screamed or coughed out their last.
Standing in the midst of it now, Tem frowned for half a moment before closing his eyes in concentration.
"Stand close to me" He murmured to the pair of children before him.
Little Khalia and Rabastian, who he'd been playing with, and conjuring glowing motes and baubles for, leaned nearer, half hiding under his robes from the flames enveloping their families homes. He himself, wasn't much protection. Tem wasn't an imposing man by any stretch. He was tall enough to be sure, but so thin that more than a few gave question to his vitality in trying circumstances. But what he lacked in bulk, he thought he well made up for in tenacity, and in the capacity of his mind.
He could hear yells and coughs from the homes around him as they were devoured by flames. The children's parents. Or their siblings. Their friends. Many of whom were among the kind sailors who had kept him company on the long voyage from his frozen home to these southern shores. The same who had taught him songs and games he could never have before imagined. This could not be allowed.
So he drowned them out a moment. Those cries were a painful distraction. Once which would keep him from helping. He drowned it all out in a thick, leaden blanket of long-practiced will.
Once he was alone in the silence of thought, he spoke seven lilting, musical syllables from long-practiced memory. Syllables which echoed in the chambers of his mind, opening doorways. Pathways that could channel and divert power from places beyond sight and reason.
At his words, that power rippled out through him, his body a mere gateway as his mind shaped it to leave him, vibrating through the air.
It was a cold, bitter power. It stung as it left him, leaving numb flesh behind. But in its wake, mist congealed out of the air.
Mist that shouldn't be possible, he knew. Not with the fire stealing away all the damp from the evening. Leaving the air parched as any desert. But the old power didn't care. The mist wasn't of this world. It was a frigid, alien thing from the land of shadows and whispers. Cloying and as alive and grasping as the fire while being at once its opposite. It did not reach for fuel or flesh to burn. Instead it was grasping for warmth. For life. For everything it was not.
And mere fire could not stand against it.
Where they met, the flames hissed and spat. But then fizzled and died away, devoured by a mist full of faint faces and silent screams. Receding back from him as the mist spread, the fires died. Even the smoldering embers fading into the night from the houses all around him. Leaving instead a thick coating of rime clinging to near every surface.
Only once the last glowing motes had gone dark then, did he let out a harsh, hissing breath that steamed against all sense in the warm summer air. No sooner had he let his concentration fade though, then the mist died away, dissipating and thinning until it was as though it was never there.
A glance over his shoulder, and he lifted his voice and his will sharply in command.
"Go inside. Lead the people within out through the smoke. If any are hurt or unable to follow, carry them back here."
And at his words, Imri and Settra, ever vigilant behind him snapped from silent stillness into motion to see his will be done. Garbed in heavy, concealing robes and simple masks of sculpted bronze, none would know them true. And that would let them help as they set forth.
Marching to see his will be done.
The thick smoke would be no impairment for them. And if needed, they were more then strong enough to carry even a big man out onto the street. So he could leave them a task he was ill-suited to and focus instead, on a problem he... Well, one he might be able to do something about. With that in mind, he would turn his face towards the direction the flames had come from. Away from the port he had arrived from this morning and instead, inland. All around, he could see perplexed residents and shopkeepers emerging from their domiciles to face the same direction.
Emerging just in time to see a vast, burning rock fall from the sky and crash onto an old, worn cart, shattering it to flinders and birthing new flames, thankfully too isolated to set the houses alight again.
There, in the darkness, lit only by the flames of the burning town, he could see them.
Silhouettes taller than a house. Twenty feet tall at least, wreathed in burning mantles of what looked like molten stone and flickering shadow. Striding through the chaos like vengeful deities.
Giants.

"Haha! Come little manlings!"
A booming voice carried through the broad-water district streets.
Though they were choked with screams and the cacophony of destruction, that caterwauling swam atop it all, full of mirth and delight entirely at odds with the burning inferno which surrounded them.
And shoving the smoldering, broken remains of the front of the tavern from his path, Talgrim Thrice-Born would step out to survey in greater detail what he had just begun to glimpse through the drinking halls windows.
"Come and see!"
He would call again, back into the debris-filled hall behind. Where patrons cowered or lay stunned and terrified. Poor, pathetic things. That a little thing like a boulder slamming into the place was enough to break them. None had been crushed. Only a few even struck by flying portions of the shattered wall. And even those were all but incapacitated and bleeding.
It was disgraceful to see. Not a one rising to their arms. Not a one ready to protect their homes. Their families. They merely sat or lay, stunned and weak. Cowering and hiding from a battle they should be leaping towards. Unsuited for the world. Frail and soft. Like the sad little creatures running in abject terror towards them, down the streets.
Men and women alike fleeing the chaos like rats. Not like proper greenskins. Or even the crude bone-gnawers that swarmed the plains in packs..
Or like the worthy foes he now saw before him.
Gesturing out into the night as he gazed into the heart of the cities mercantile district then, he would grin. Tusks gleaming in firelight as he tried to rouse the rabble into a worthier state. Into making some better show of themselves. Into defending their kin and loves and livelihoods as they should.
"Giants have come to try their hands against us!"
He could see them clearly, even through the smoke and the cinders.
Two of them. Shattering houses and picking through the debris like they were looking for something.
A score or perhaps even two of smaller, leaner figures clambering all around them over roof and rubble. Men perhaps?
Or maybe Hobs he thought. They seemed too large and lacking in good sport to be orcs.
He would laugh all the louder for it as he pulled the ragged old patchwork cloak he wore in manling towns from his shoulders. It served well enough to help give comfort to the easily frightened little soft-skins in towns like this. Let them pretend he was merely a paragon in stature of their own people. It was a fine means to let him enjoy his purpose in bothering with towns and cities like this. Song and drink and meat. Comfortable beds and amenable company. Things that would be far, far harder to find if he could not at least pretend to being a manling himself. At least not without causing an undue scene and drawing the guards. But now, he had no need of it. There were greater fears to be had then Grim for the gaurds tonight. Even his prodigious height and width meant nothing to the foes before him.
Here he'd settled in this place with the tired thought that only dull boredom would wait for him. All the pretty faces had been well taken. The entertainment unenthusiastic and tiresome. Indeed, it was only cheap strong drink and ample meals that had kept him in place. But Fortune herself and the ancients had smiled upon him with far better to raise his spirits. They had provided foes enough for him and the towns guard alike. For them and more besides.
It would be an evening after all.
But it would be a poor battle indeed to do so alone. None to stand beside him, or to tell the tale of his victory, or else to remember his glorious end. So once again, he called back, shoving the rubble wide enough that any with the stones could find easy path to follow him to battle. "Come! Take up your arms before they find whatever they seek in this place and depart!"
And with that, he set off at a bounding lope.
To glory!
The glowing lights of Vernon seem to glow from the mountain tops. This was a well awaited celebration for the Wren family. Most families that only bore daughters usually tried hard to produce sons were a bit different when it came to that. Lady Brisa and Lord Eiden. The powerful couple not only bore only daughters, three sets of elemental twins which was amazing considering most couples only got one or two this blessed union for a lovely six. All of their daughters blossom beautifully and now this time for the final set to have a coming of age ceremony
.
Aura, The first born out of this set of twins was a beautiful blonde with striking blue eyes who is gifted with the element or air. She was a loose in the wild spirit but most one’s gifted with the element of air water it was not a surprise. Most to control her goddess gift. When she finally did it was a sight to behold. All the elves had some sort of gift one way or another but this family in particular only had elementals. Village itself seem to be blessed with so many of this type it was said that where they lived was enchanted, and that rumor trickle down to other villages of not only just humans but other elves. Just like her sisters before her Aura was not alone.
Blaze, Was born second in this set of twins, but she never let that define her. Not only washy born with a rare red hair that not many elves had it was clear as day that her gifted element was fire.
Both daughters share their fathers striking blue eyes That would put a sapphire to shame. Unlike her older sister Blaze Could control her powers more easily and seem to command them with an is that not many elves had. From a young age the fire control came naturally even though it made her very hard to control but to be honest most fire elementals were a bit chaotic. She was the hardest one to train since even though most elves could use fire but she seem to be gifted by the gods with something none of them had. It was hard to bring up twins especially twins with opposing elemental such as air and fire especially when they fought it was not a pretty sight!
Luckily they did not destroy the village though it was not easy to bring up such powerful elves and even worse that they were siblings since their squabbles tended to get large. Thank goodness their families knew how to deal with them and they survived long enough to get to their coming of age ceremony.
The ceremony brought back all of their children especially since this was their last set of twins to go through the trials and tribulations of becoming adults with in the elf community. The Lord and Lady always had a grand audience when their children would finally decide what they want to do with their life. Usually once a coming of age ceremony the twins would either separate and go their separate ways to explore the world or stay together and figure out if they wanted to live outside of the village. All of the children together assets but they had no idea if these two would actually continue to stay together. The ceremony brought together other villages and even some humans up the mountains to see this wonderful ceremony.
It was a beautiful daughter performing their best tricks and proving their skills in front of a massive audience congratulating them for continuing their studies and becoming the best they could. By the end both of them announce that they would actually stay together which was a shock to their parents but they were very happy that they would not face the world alone. They both decided they wanted to explore other lands and even though it was not easy for the elves to strike it out on their own if they had each other they could face anything and possibly keep each other in check and not let their powers and gifts cost too much trouble for the rest of the world. As usual the coming-of-age ceremony was a wonderful event that lasted a Fortnite giving them a chance to enjoy their family and siblings as well as meet other people and elves trying to lower them to visiting their village or Home first once they left there in Village.
With so many tempting offers it was hard for them to choose but they decided to visit a more human town not too far from their own and thus setting them off on their very first solo journey with each other….
~*~*~*~*~*~
The stairs of so many humans with something they would never get used to especially when they were raised in a place that was homogeneous with the pointy eared ones. They dressed very simply with trousers and a gear that was made for traveling along with their rucksacks full of what they needed with food and money though they had no idea what the currency in each village or town they would enter needed but usually gold coins did the trick.
“I told you we should went south! Going north most people are cold just like you you should’ve listen to me going south we would have a better chance and they’re staring at it’s funny…” Blaze kept her voice low as she talked to her sister walking close to her trying not to get bothered by all the stairs they got but it was mostly because of their ears or maybe because of their clothing style it wasn’t too fancy but it did stand out because they looked overly prepared.
“Shhh. Are you always going to argue with me? If we go south it’ll be too hot and besides there’s nothing wrong with the north I think you just don’t like the cold and it’s not that cold anyways stop being difficult it’s an adventure if you really hate it you can go your own Way even though I would prefer if you stayed.” Aura did not always get along with her sister but she did love her and didn’t really want to part ways with her so soon but for now she was driving her absolutely insane!
This town was not anything like they were used to and the shouting was definitely a human thing or at least they thought it was. Both of them stayed close make me try to keep their pouches close by to make sure no one tried to pickpocket them. The water district streets or something when expecting but hey it was a new adventure they should at least enjoy it but as they listened they heard a booming voice.
"Haha! Come little manlings!"
“Manlings?” They both said in unison since they never heard that term before but it only drew them closer and closer to where the voice was coming from and caught their interest. This place was not as pristine as their home but it only made them more interested in what was going on. “This place doesn’t look safe Aura. I really don’t like the looks of it and did you just hear the voice to say Giants? Are they extinct?” Blaze said softly to her sister as she tried to shush Blaze who was clearly worried.
“No. I think they’re still around but we’ve never seen them or at least they never came up to our side of the mountain don’t be a coward let’s go check it out! And here I thought you were the more adventurous one if you’re scared of a non-pristine town and extinct giants you’re gonna be no fun in this journey.” Aura thought her sister was more brave and at least right now she felt like she had more courage than her redheaded younger sister. “Let’s at least check it out and if it’s boring we can go but what’s the point of playing it safe and here I thought you were a fire elemental.” That talk only pissed off Blaze Who is well known for not turning down a challenge and her boots started clicking gets the ground faster the faster as she would head towards the voice. She plan to prove her sister completely wrong and in her own reckless style decided to call out to the voice looking for people to join.
“I am not a manling but your cry and call has not gone unheard. We shall join! I have not seen a giant them but how hard could they be do you accept elves or are we not good enough for you!” Blaze called out as Aura Was about to join in but she failed to realize that by egging her sister on would cause her be even more reckless than usual!
“ what she means to say is we are very interested in joining your party I would love to see a giant and if you would allow us to join we could be quite useful!” Aura Was trying her best to save face since her sister had a tendency of embarrassing her all the time but after what her sister had just said it sounded like they were going to join this party if they didn’t mind having new non human faces. “We are stronger than we look what type of member do you need?” Aura was at least The more diplomatic twin but she helped that blaze did not scare the party leader and even with her sisters blunt approach this might be the start of a great adventure!
Blaze gave an elbow to her sister as she raised her voice and shouted; “TO GLORY!” Aura looked a bit embarrassed those she would do the same especially since she really did not like being left out or being out shown by her sister!
