She shouldn't feel so lonely.

Maki knows better. Her husband works hard to provide for her, and if that means he's away on work, then she needs to respect that, and keep herself occupied. Her husband is *always* thinking about her; she knows this, because he asked his father to check in on her while he's abroad for work. If that doesn't show his care, then what does? She tells herself over and over again that she's just being too needy-- she's so used to having people around after essentially raising her three half-siblings-- but it doesn't soothe the vacant ache in her chest. When they'd been married, he'd been around so often, but now...

He's only really home to sleep these days, and now he's in Europe for an extended business trip. His company is networking with several sister companies across Europe, and as their chief software developer, he's needed to ensure installation and connection go smoothly. He'll be back in three months, or so he says, and Maki can't help feeling lonely and tired and like her feelings don't matter. Each time she tries to tell him she prefers him home to living in luxury, he just laughs and writes her off, like she doesn't know what she wants, and she just--

Wants someone to care about her, and how she feels. At the very least, her father-in-law will be keeping her company for a bit, so there's that. She should really be putting her best foot forward and making the best of this, rather than pouting like a spoiled child.

It'll be okay. It's always okay once she lets herself get over it.

It hadn't been since their wedding that his son had spoken to him. Always too busy, too many other important things going on. Not enough time to make it back home to visit. Excuse after excuse to the point Sam stopped trying. Which was why he was so surprised when he received the call from him. He remembered the exact words. "Sam, I'll be in Europe for work during the next three months. Maki will be at home; please check on her while I'm away if it's not too much to ask." It didn't bother Sam that the first contact he had in years was him being asked for something. It did piss him off how he spoke about his wife though, like she was a chore, or some afterthought.

As he drove towards the city to make sure Maki was alright, he tried his best to not fume. He just wasn't sure where he had gone wrong with John but after his wife's passing his son was never the same. He grew cold and distant and left home as soon as he was able and had only spoken to him a handful of times to let him know about his college courses, meeting Maki, introducing him to Maki, and most recently their wedding.

Just under two hours later Sam was parked at his son's home. The place was bland and lifeless, a replica of every other house on the street. Sam sneered at the line of 'upscale' homes with their sterile, manicured yards. "This place looks about as lifeful as a magazine cover." He grumbled as he walked to the front door and knocked. Stepping back clasped his hands together in front of him and waited for his daughter in-law to open the door.
