Crystal clocked out at 6:53, even though she was not officially supposed to leave until seven. It was close enough that the punch clock would round it off to seven anyway, and she was tired of standing at the cash register. The front end manager wasn't there to argue and there weren't any customers in line.
She changed clothes in the bathroom; the blue polo shirt she had to wear was baggy and hot - it was uncomfortable for a bus ride in the June heat wave, and ugly. She wore a pink tank top instead, one that had fit normally when she bought it but now stretched snugly over her chest and belly. The fabric was soft enough that it felt fine, and she liked it when she got second glances from the guys she passed by. She wouldn't dream of cheating on Chad, and he'd been doing an okay job of helping support her. A little extra attention was all she was after.
Crystal hoped that he'd be home when she got there. She hated her job and wanted to quit, and she would do that as soon as she could, but right now they still needed the extra money. This meant that their schedules kept them apart too much. She could never remember what his was, and hers changed every week.
When she got back to the apartments she saw his car in the lot and made her way up the stairs to the door. She opened it and called "Hello?" as she walked in, dropping her ig purse on the floor.
