I am particularly fascinated by stories that explore the journey of individuals striving to transcend their past limitations and heal from their traumas in unique ways. These narratives resonate with me because they highlight the resilience and capacity for growth that people can exhibit, even in challenging circumstances.
My interest wanes when a story becomes unnecessarily dark, where characters are depicted as mere victims of their desires, lacking any glimpse of redemption or progress.
Recently, I've developed an appreciation for narratives where characters show a deep respect for each other and actively consider each other's emotions. This element not only fosters a more empathetic atmosphere but also enriches the plot, particularly when the story navigates through darker themes. Such respect among characters can serve as a strong foundation, making the impact of any ensuing moral dilemmas or hardships more profound. I'm aware that this dynamic isn't suitable for all characters or plots, as some stories might demand a more conflicted/abusive approach.
The theme of aftercare also holds significant importance for me. There's something moving about stories where, regardless of the harsh realities characters may endureāwhether through physical or emotional trialsāthere exists a beacon of hope at the end. It's impactful for me when a character finds solace in another who offers a comforting embrace and words of reassurance that despite everything, they will be okay. This notion of healing and support is not just comforting; it adds a layer of depth to the narrative, emphasizing the human capacity for kindness and recovery. Although this theme might not align with every narrative or character arc, it's a powerful element that I find especially rewarding in storytelling.
Oh! And I am a sucker for consent
(Though there are times when nonconsent can be rewarding and exhilirating)
