The rhythmic chanting from the four hooded figures was slow and ominous. There was something in the air and had anyone entered the secret room they would have been struck with fear, seeing the frightful scenery before them.
But no one entered, and no one was going to stop the frightful ritual dedicated to evil and mad gods that mankind had all but forgotten about.
On the 13th floor of the same building
It had been a busy evening at the office. At least for Trey, it had been excruciating. It seemed like there had been a collective computer breakdown cascading from the second floor and going up. As a tech assistant, he had run from one computer to the next. His superiors had begun to suspect gremlin activity early on, but that was above Trey’s pay grade.
Trey now stood on the 13th floor of the office building and looked out at the lights of what people called “the capital of the world” or “the greatest city in the world”. He was exhausted and didn’t feel like this was the greatest place to be.
He had been recruited out of high school, not having any money to pursue an academic career, nor the aptitude to pursue a magic one. What he did have was an aptitude for computers and fixing them. But this job was more slave work than anything else. Minimum wage, long hours and abusive bosses. The only positive thing at this job was Alice down the hall here on the 13th floor. She might not have been a looker, Trey didn’t have any ambition that he would ever get a girlfriend that was a supermodel or anything. But she was sweet and funny and intelligent, and she treated him better than anyone else at the company.
Alice was the only reason that Trey was here at the 13th floor now. He was relaxing in the small kitchenette, drinking a cup of tea and looking out at the city. He was hoping to get a glimpse of Alice and maybe just for once not mumble when saying hello to her. He had it all planned in his head. Hi Allice. How has your day been? But deep inside his mind he knew that it would never happen. He was sure that she barely knew him.
He sighed once more and his mind started wandering. If only he had had magical abilities. Then he would have been given a scholarship at one of the colleges, or if only he had heard the calling of one of the gods. But nothing like that had ever happened to him. He was just Trey the simple IT guy.
Trey heard footsteps approaching the kitchen. Soft steps from a lithe woman. He could feel his heart beating faster, and his cheeks heat up. Was it Alice that by any chance came to the kitchenette before finishing for the day?
