Old legends speak of a moongoddess that came from the outer reaches of the universe. She cameto make the Earth's moon her home in a time before the Oans hadforged the Starheart. Before the ice had claimed Arion's Atlantis.Some said she had fled a doomed world, and a equally doomed pantheon.Those that said such things called her Yuda, but as time passed shebecame only The Goddess.
(sidenotes: Krypton had two moon. One was blown up, but notbefore the planet exploded. The goddess of the twin moons was thedaughter to Rao. She was the more passive out of all of them.
OnEarth's moon she was able to set up her own way of living. Build asociety of her own, and even help the primitive beings of Earth toevolve. She sensed in some of them the hand of one she had known.Particularly among the people of the region of Earth that would cometo be called Egypt. But the gods of Earth were a jealous sort, theywould not tolerate interference from a god of the stars. So theGoddess brought humans that wished to go with her to the moon, and asociety was born there. Or so the legends say.
Partof this legend spoke of a child born to the goddess, the father wasunknown. But rumors suggested it it was a dark god. One who came toher in the form of a friend and ally, but who really held nothing butdarkness within his heart. The child of their union was unusuallygifted in all forms of magic, but showed the most alarming talent asa master in the darker arts. It was a rumor, and a revelation thatworried the entire kingdom.
Thechild, Prince Derek, was born during a blood moon, already one strikeagainst him according to the members of the palace. Though raisedwith ever privilege a prince could have he was never happy unless hewas reading. Reading wouldn't have been so bad but it was alwaysbooks on the dark arts and art of war. Brought to him from everycorner of the cosmos. When asked about where he got such books theanswer was always given 'his friend in the shadows'. The Goddessfeared she knew who this friend was in fact. His long vanishedfather.
Ashe grew of age he was put into the army for training where he madehis way up in the ranks with casual ease. A fact which annoyed thegenerals, who feared it would smack of favortism. Derek was no foolas to how others felt about him, but he locked those feelings awayand powered though any task he was given. He was determined to showthem all he wasn't the misfit prince that the queen took pity on,and the kingdom viewed with suspiscion.
Itwas half way thought his training to be a knight when mysteriousattacker came to the palace. The attackers came in swift, catchingthe other knights off guard. An attack was unheard of, it had neverbeen. Only the new recruits and one general were left after theinitial onslaught. Derek only had one mission in his mind, save hismother. For the Goddess had grown old, and with so few worshippersher power was not what it had once been.
Thegeneral shouted his orders, and even fought Derek to make sure hestood within ranks. But the prince new his real priority layelsewhere. Finally Derek had had enough and with a single blow dazedthe general. After that he ran straight to the palace groundsshouting for his mother.
Withinthe palace came the sound of conflict. There Derek saw his mother,the Goddess, being attacked by a creature of shadow. Seeing thisbrought out his full rage. Leaping to her defense his magic warpedhis own body to better be able to defend his mother, and acceleratedhis age about five years. But despite the ferocity of the Prince'sassault, the being that was causing the attack only laughed. Thoughit did stop it's attack on the queen. She shouted and cried out toher son to leave her be, not to face Eclipso!
Forin the years since her son's birth The Goddess had learned just whothe monster was. She had fallen victim to the very ruse that the Godshe once served had avoided millenia before. When Cythonna had comeforth and sought the attention of Rao. Long, long ago on long deadKrypton where she had been Yuda the Moon Goddess. That had lead tothe War of Ice and Fire and nearly the destruction of Krypton. Buthad her own failure to see through Eclipso's ruse now lead to evenworse? She feared that it in fact had.
ButDerek was hearing none of his mother's warnings and in his ragecalled forth his sword and gauntlets to add to his attack. Derekcharged at the shadow being heedless of the risk to himself. But asfast as Prince Derek was, Eclipso quickly dodged each attack. Onlyfinally did Derek manage to connect with an attack, the sword justtouching the shadow's skin. The being chuckled and turned to face theprince. He wondered aloud at how ungrateful a son Derek was, afterall the books he had brought him for so many years.
Therevelation that this grinning monster of the shadows was his fathergave Derek pause a brief moment. It was all that it took for Derek tobe flung into the marble wall. An attack that would of normallybroke the spine of other's, but not the prince. He rose to his feet,bloodied but defiant still. Calling for his sword again he rushed atthe evil being. Only for both Prince and Father to vanish in a burstof deepest blackest light.
About12 years later….
Acelebration was to be had. The Goddess had slept for much of the timesince Eclipso's attack. Regaining her strength after the viciousassault that had cost the kingdom it's prince. The ball was goingwell, with most of the kingdom present, when a stranger arrived. Hecharmed everybody with whom he spoke, but some wondered about who hewas. True there were others from outside the kingdom present, butthis one seemed all at once both a stranger and yet familiar. In timehe asked the Queen to dance, smiling as they cleared the floor withtheir artistry. Finishing the amazing show by spining the Queenacross the dance floor, through the great doors, and out to thegarden. All to the thunderous applause of the assembled guests.
Butonce outside the trap was sprung as the queen was suddenly trapped. Apart of the floor turned into a viscious black and shadowy sludge,holding her fast. The stranger smiled wickedly, and dropped hisaltered appearance, leaving the queen in shock. Here then was herlong missing son, Prince Derek. Now a grown adult at a full 6'4tall. His blonde hair awash with dark highlights, and with an equallydark look in his eyes. The queen cried out suddenly and this set theguards aware that much was amiss.
Afigure poured out of the shadows and laughed taking a male form,Eclipso had returned. Taunting the Queen, the very Goddess, theywatched together as the prince cut down the guards with terrible easeand efficiancy. The few that were still alive were cast down by aburst of Eclipso's black light. Eclipso laughed again and forced thequeen to watch as the prince banged his staff onto the ground. Theclouds started to circle and lightning rained down to enhance thedestruction. While down among the kingdom itself shadows gatheredand started to bubble, taking form into little hellish minions ofchaos.
Thedestruction to the Kingdom continued unabated, until finally thequeen broke free and challenged her own son to stop this carnage.Eclipso only laughed as Prince Derek leaped high over head, intent toengage the very mother he had once rose to defend. The queen used thelight of her own soul to attempt to break though the darkness thatencased her son's soul.
OnceEclipso realized his son might be freed, he acted however. Returningto the very stuff of shadows he sought to eclipse his son with ablack diamond, to possess him utterly. The diamond was plunged intothe Prince, and in a few seconds their was a evil, blood curdlinglaugh. Eclipso's laugh coming from the prince even as large bat wingssprouted out from his back, and his face eclipsed down the center.
Eclipsowas successful in taking over Prince Derek, and making him hispuppet. With that the queen knew what she had to do. She summoned allher might, even as the possessed prince jumped high in the sky, swordcoming down. Once the Queen had been a Goddess of the Moon. The Moonwhich reflected the light of the sun, Eclipso's antithesis. Now shecalled on that light and turned it against the evil within her child.The queen used her soul's energy to dismiss the evil from her son.
Itwas the last battle, the evil was expelled. With a wretched and ragefilled scream Eclipso was banished from the realm. But her son'slife was almost at an end as well. To save him and give him thepossibility of a better life someday in the future,the queen sealedher only child away in a black crystal coffin. Ironically usingEclipso's own diamond and symbol as a means of spiting the dark god.She had it placed deep within a crater on the moon. On it's equator,so it would often be bathed in the sun.
Afterthat battle the kingdom fell. The damage was to great and the Goddesshad expended to much of her strength to repair it. She would sleepagain, the survivors returned to Earth to tell the tale of the oncegreat Kingdom of the Moon. Until all that was left were stories,fables, locked away in ancient tomes. But one day, the Goddess wouldawaken again. When a bright light in the heavens would start herwakening from her slumber. When the children she once knew called onher name once again. When that day would come, could her only son befar behind? A mother who never gave up on her only child. But then,neither had his father.
