Research can be a dangerous thing, and secret research even moreso. So when Melina, a research ship in the Stratus Sector, went silent, it was imperative to quietly discover the cause of the blackout. Of course, this wasn't exactly the kind of research that should be made public, but that's where the Marauders come into play. They are a small group of privateers, hired by many groups to dig into closets for skeletons, or in some cases, make sure they are the only ones digging in that particular closet. Military secrets, government secrets...if you want something investigated with as few leaks as possible, the Marauders are generally a good choice.
Our characters are a pair of Marauders hired by a mysterious benefactor to investigate the research ship and find out what happened. What they discover, however, might well be above their pay grade. They are good at keeping secrets, but off-the-books research can lead to some dangerous grounds, and the backers of that research may feel a need to make sure there are no loose ends. To say nothing about the motives of anyone else involved with the ship going dark...
That's the basic outline of the plot. I have left it open in terms of our characters because I have plenty of flexibility there. Their past, their gender, even their race is up for discussion. After all, half the fun of a sci-fi RP is considering cross-species liaisons, both of a cultural and carnal nature, right? As for where the story would go after the opening, I'm very much a plot-on-the-go type of roleplayer. I have ideas on plot points, but the actual connecting, and details, tend to flow more organically for me if I don't have it set how to get there. Plus, what's a mystery investigation without mystery?
As for the dark themes, let's just say that I feel there are usually not good reasons for research to be done off the grid, and I want there to be room if things get a bit ugly for our protagonists. I can play to just about any level of darkness happily, although I do want to emphasize that unless my partner wants it that way, that doesn't necessarily include anything behind closed doors.
