For centuries, legend has persisted of a place between the Old World and the New World known as Terrasuzaku, a place unexplored by the likes of the Hunters Guild or the Research Commission. Surrounded by an impenetrable storm, and home to a myriad of monsters, this place has faded into obscurity, now known only as a myth to the civilizations of the world.

However, Terrasuzaku is no myth.

Many years ago, a fleet of explorers and Hunters--composed mostly of residents of Yukumo and Kamura--were swept up in the storm, and were stranded on this land. In order to protect themselves, they built a village protected by a great wall of wood and stone. In time, the residents came to call their new home "Katei". In time, the village began to flourish, sustaining itself on crops raised by farmers and the bounty of the fields, forests, and waters of the area surrounding Katei.

Thirty years ago, a new group found itself shipwrecked on Terrasuzaku: a group of engineers and researchers who had been part of the Research Commission heading to the new world, members of the Second Fleet. To their surprise, they were welcomed with open arms by the people of Katei, and treated with the warmth and kindess of family. These researchers and engineers accelerated the advancement of Katei, bringing with them new techniques to survive in this new world.

As Katei grew and expanded, it needed more protection from the fierce creatures outside of its walls. A new generation of Hunters was trained and armed, and now work to protect their homes and loved ones...

Katei Village

The hub of all Hunter activity on Terrsuzaku. Katei Village is located near the northern coast of Terrasuzaku The architecture of most of the buildings is heavily inspired by Yukumo Village and Kamura Village. The village's main square is home to shops offering all kinds of goods and services, from food to blacksmithing. In the springtime, the residents of Katei all gather here to watch the Great Cherry Tree when it blooms. On the northern side of the village, near the Guild Hall, is a small grove of peach trees surrounding a hot spring known as the Momo Spring. It has long been said that the waters of Momo Spring are able to cure or treat illness, and spending an evening in the hot spring is something many people of Katei enjoy.

Prominent Residents of Katei Village

  • Serizawa: A Wyverian woman who is the current leader of Katei. She is warm and friendly, and most of the people born in Katei consider her an honorary auntie. When not working, she can often be found teaching the children of Katei the history of the village, as well as telling stories about her past adventures as a Hunter.
  • Weyland: An eccentric Troverian man who works as Katei's blacksmith. He is loud and boisterous, and is unmatched when it comes to forging weapons and armor for Hunters. He can often be found at the Jade Rathalos Tavern on his days off, drinking mead and ale, singing songs, and regaling listeners with tales of his life as a sailor... however, it's sometimes hard to tell what's true and what's him spinning a tall tale.
  • Nekotei: A Grimalkyne that has given up life in the wild and become a trader in Katei. Nekotei sells goods to anyone who needs them, but is known to make special deals with Hunters. He is madly in love with Kagunya, and does everything he can think of to win her affection.
  • Kagunya: A Felyne who runs the Momo Spring. She is a quiet, humble person, but takes great pride in her pure white fur. She is kind to everyone in the village, but Nekotei's constant attempts to make her fall in love with him can cause her to get annoyed; indeed, on more than one occasion, she's hurled Nekotei out of Momo Springs so hard and far that he's landed outside the walls of Katei.
  • Tetsuo: A retired human Hunter who acts as the Katei Guild Master. As much as he would love to be out in the field, he acknowledges that his duty as Guild Master is more important, and must be done for the sake of the people of Katei.
  • Kotetsu: Guild Master Tetsuo's younger brother. While he wears many hats in his duties around the village, Kotetsu operates as the Arena Master, helping Hunters hone their skills. He dotes on his daughter whenever possible, much to her chagrin.
  • Torako: Arena Master Kotetsu's daughter. When she was younger, she was very much a daddy's girl, and would spend as much time with him as possible. That changed as she grew up, and she began seeking more independence. To fulfil this desire she became a Hunter, and acts as Serizawa's eyes and ears in the field.

Other Residents
  • Kuroko the Fishmonger: A Seafolk woman who sells fish in the market. She's a little bit of a ditz, but her heart is in the right place.
  • Yukio the Fisherman: A Seafolk man who works as a fisherman. He's intimately familiar with the sea life around Katei. While somewhat aloof and distant, he shows a softer side to his wife Kuroko.
  • Shiori the Biologist: An excitable, quirky young human woman with a passion for all kinds of life. Her skills understanding the plants and animals around Katei have been invaluable.
  • Matsuri the Chef: A cheerful, motherly Felyne who owns and operates the canteen. Her dishes are loved by everybody in Katei, but she always wants to improve her cooking. If she sees a Hunter or their companions heading out without eating, she'll drag them to the canteen and insist on making something for them.
  • Koko the Herbalist: Shiori's grandmother, and a master of concocting medicines made from plants and fungi. She's a sweet old lady, and often bakes treats for the children of the village as rewards for helping her with errands.
  • Hina and Yua: A married couple who operate a farm, raising fruits and vegetables, as well as keeping Gargwa and Moofah. They are kind and humble, always willing to help out their neighbors whenever they need anything.
  • Kanta: An elderly Wyverian man who lives outside of the village walls. He spends his days gathering mushrooms, herbs, and other materials out in the forest around Katei.
  • Ichigo: The owner and operator of the Jade Rathalos Tavern, and Kanta's granddaughter. She speaks little, and has become something of the unofficial secret keeper of the people of Katei.

On the Subject of the Monsters of Terrasuzaku

I was born and raised in Katei Village, as were my parents. According to the oldest residents of the village, the monsters of this region have distinct differences from their kin in the Old World. These adaptations have arisen due to Terrasuzaku being isolated from the rest of the world, and the unique environments putting different evolutionary pressures on the monsters of the region. These changes include different behaviors and abilities, as well as morphological differences that distinguish them from the monsters that my grandfather and other older Hunters would have fought. While cataloguing the species of monsters and endemic life that live in Terrasuzaku, I will consult the elders to determine what adaptations are unique to monsters that live in this land.

Shiori Natsumi

List of Small Monsters (to be expanded with field guide entries)
Altaroth.png
These Neopterans are found in a wide variety of habitats. They store food in a sac on their abdomen, which they carry back to their nest. Materials like honey, mushrooms, seeds, and fruit can be collected from their bodies when killed. While not dangerous to most Hunters, they can still inflict Defense Down and Paralysis.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Like other Neopterans, Altaroth are incredibly fragile in comparison to other monsters. If a Hunter requires body parts of an Altaroth, the best method to deal with them is utilizing Poison in order to kill them.
Anteka.png
Herbivores that live in cold environments. They are normally docile monsters, but will attack if they feel threatened. Their pelts are highly sought after by those who live in colder regions, and their antlers have many uses in crafting and medicine.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
According to the elders, the Anteka in Terrasuzaku have a symbiotic relationship with Banbaro that has never been seen elsewhere. However, like the Anteka of elsewhere, they are incredibly tough creatures. If you need to harvest antlers from them, there is no need to slay them; the recommended method is to knock them out or put them to sleep, and then break or saw them off.
Apceros.png

Monsters closely related to the Aptonoth, Apceros are armored Herbivores that live in hot, dry climates like deserts and volcanoes. Their meat and eggs are a valued commodity, but due to their natural aggression and territorial nature, this is easier said than obtained.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
There's not much different between the Apceros of Terrasuzaku and the rest of the world, though it's been noted that they'll incorporate carrion into their diet more readily than elsewhere. They're grouchy, hardy, and are willing to chase you for miles if you take one of their eggs. Watch out for the powerful beak and thagomizer!
Aptonoth.png
Placid Herbivores with distinctive crests. They live in large herds, raising their young communally. For generations, they've been a staple source of meat, eggs and leather, and it's not uncommon for them to be tamed for use as beasts of burden.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
According to the elders, Aptonoth are widespread in the Old World, and are one of the most common Herbivores that you will find; that being said, they're almost unheard of in the Kamura region. While Aptonoth will usually opt to flee from predators, they will stand and fight if protecting their young. Those thagomizers aren't just for show, as Grandma Koko will attest to.
Bnahabra.png
Flying Neopterans found in almost every type of environment. They lay their eggs in carrion after injecting a fluid that hastens decomposition. If parts are needed from a Bnahabra, it's best to kill them with poison.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
I find these adorable little buggers adorable, but Hunters aren't as fond of them. These Neopterans are able to shoot a corrosive liquid that lowers resistance to elemental blights. On top of that, Terrasuzakan Bnahabra's stingers are able to inflict poison. Not dangerous on their own, but when you're fighting a large monster, they can be a nuisance.
Boaboa.png
Lynians found in cold regions, Boaboa are covered with thick fur. Their society reveres the Popo, and they wear masks to honor them. Young Boaboa may undergo a rite of passage to hunt a large monster by themselves. If they survive the hunt, they are seen as heroes within their tribe.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Boaboa have never been seen in the Old World, but they seem to be related to Lynians like Shakalaka and Gajalaka. They utilize status ailments while hunting, and what status a Boaboa uses can be deciphered by the color of the paint on the Popo tusks on their masks.
Bombadgy.png
Omnivorous Fanged Beasts with a distinctive, rotund appearance. Their bodies can be filled with gas, which has explosive properties when exposed to air. They generally are harmless to Hunters, but will stand their ground if they feel threatened.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
A lot of people think Bombadgies are weird-looking, but I find them adorable! They're just the right shape to be a good stuffed animal. Generally speaking, they have few materials that are useful to Hunters, but elders from Kamura have pointed out that they can be useful if you're fighting a monster near them. Just whack a Bombadgy at a monster, and let the gas do the work! This usually doesn't hurt the little critter, and odds are they'll waddle away and hide until their gas bladders refill.

Flying Wyverns known as the "King of the Sky". Together with Rathians they stake a wide territories centered around their nests. They are apex predators, descending on intruders and prey alike from the sky and attacking with venomous talons and fiery breath.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Whenever someone says the word "wyvern", the first creature that pops into most people's heads is the Rathalos. They are powerful predators found almost everywhere in the world. Rathalos are considered the standard for if a Hunter is ready to deal with tougher challenges.
0cb9669492da621df23cb1ffe9e876c0.png

A Subspecies of Rathalos that is the result of a genetic mutation. They are much more agile than the average Rathalos, and spend more time airborne when fighting enemies. They are especially aggressive during mating season, when territorial disputes are more common, and competition for the best hunting grounds is fierce.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
I have spoken to more than one Blademaster who swears up and down that they would rather fight a dozen Bulldromes all at once than deal with an Azure Rathalos. They stay in the air much more than their cousins, making attacks from the ground useless. Flash Bombs are almost necessary for a Blademaster when fighting with an Azure Rathalos, though it should be noted that using Flash Bombs too often can make a monster resistant to their effects.
a6373046536cce2c8bdbe73e435f83d0.png

A Rare Species of Rathalos that arise as a result of a genetic mutation, often called the "Silver Moon". It's believed that they appear once in every ten thousand clutches of eggs. They are larger and stronger than the average Rathalos, and known to be much more short-tempered. When enraged they can enter something known as an "Incandescent State", where its fiery breath becomes much more powerful

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Silver Rathalos have never been observed in Terrasuzaku, but since Rathalos are endemic to the region, one appearing isn't out of the question. Unlike normal Rathalos, they are resistant to damage from the Dragon Element, and have thicker hides. When in their Incandescent State their attacks become much more powerful. Some Hunters have reported that the best way to knock a Silver Rathalos out of this state is to attack the head as much as possible.
4454ca18c3d72d3bda47ab25d7be55ff.png

Female Flying Wyverns known as "Queens of the Land". They utilize a combination of fiery breath and their venomous tails to bring down prey and combat enemies. In contrast to Rathalos, they primarily hunt on the ground. They can often be found with Rathalos, and a mated pair is a fierce challenge for any Hunter.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Any Hunter will tell you that one of the best ways to make a fight with a Rathian easier is to cut off her tail, as this will nullify a Rathian's ability to inflict the ailment. If you're having trouble finding a Rathian in the vicinity, it's a viable tactic to find her nest and take an egg, if any are present. Upon detecting an intruder's scent at the nest, a Rathian will drop everything and make a beeline for her eggs to protect them.
8cfe62ef08f73524ac031093975163b4.png

A Subspecies of Rathian that arises as a result of genetic mutation. These wyverns are known to be stronger than normal Rathians, and wield their venomous tails with more skill and speed. They can often be found alongside Azure Rathalos.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
These wyverns are heavily associated with cherry blossoms, but last I checked cherry blossoms don't poison you or set you on fire. But I digress. Pink Rathians utilize a wider variety of attacks with their tails than normal Rathians, and can utilize a bite augmented with fire. The Pink Rathians of Terrasuzaku have a unique adaptation: in comparison to other Rathians, the spikes on their tails are more prone to coming loose with the right amount of force. That means, with the simple flick of the tail, a Pink Rathian can hurl poisonous spines at foes and prey.
4a2bc7494afe6cb48ec84efb0574b977.png

A Rare species of Rathian that results as a genetic mutation, known as "the Golden Moon". These wyverns are incredibly rare, said to appear only once in every ten thousand clutches of eggs. Their scales are incredibly tough, and in addition to standard Rathian abilities, they can enter an enhanced state known as an Incandescent State. In this state, the power of their fire attacks sharply increases.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Although Gold Rathians have never been seen in Terrasuzaku, there are Rathians in the region, so it's not out of the question that one of these wyverns may arise. With other Rathians, it's advisable to cut the tail off in order to nullify their ability to incflict poison. According to the elders, Gold Rathians' hides are so hard that this may be difficult to achive. While in their Incadescent State, aim attacks at the head in order to knock them out of it.
550831ab6242e3819377aadc9880c5b3.png

Leviathans known for their distinctive, spongey manes. Royal Ludroth live with harems of female Ludroth, and will protect the group to the best of his abilities. They store water in their mane to keep from drying out on land, as well as to augment their attacks. If a Royal Ludroth's mane dries out, it will seek a source of water to replenish it.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
As far as Leviathans go, Royal Ludroth are a fairly well known species, and can be found in both fresh and saltwater. Their spit attacks can rob a Hunter of their stamina, which is makes it more difficult to recover stamina. Nulberries are a must when fighting one of these aquatic wyverns.
fcf1de8f05b2cffc2d846adf8976728a.png

A subspecies of Royal Ludroth colored a vibrant purple. They store poison in the spongey mane around their neck, which can then be released for attacks. Unlike the nominate subspecies of Royal Ludroth, they forego living in harems, and move around on land more. They still require water, and are still found in wetlands.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
These beautiful Leviathans are notably more aggressive than normal Royal Ludroth, and attack enemies with poison stored in their manes, though they can spit poison as well. Breaking their mane weakens their poison attacks, so it's a good strategy to damage it as much as possible.
c1ccd8facf9f630995cf0ce512ac4c1b.png

These Carapaceons utilize the skulls of wyverns as shells. Their claws have evolved into massive, scythe-like blades, which they unfurl when enraged. They can be found in a number of environments, including wetlands and volcanoes. Sometimes valuable pearls can be found in their shells.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
These giant enemy crabs shouldn't be taken lightly. They can attack from almost anywhere, blasting at targets with pressurized water (just don't think too much about what that water is) from the ceilings of caverns, or burrowing up from the ground to slash with their claws. They can induce Bleeding, so it's a wise idea to bring Sushifish or Gourmet Fish whenever you fight one.
Somnacanth.png
Fishlike Leviathans known for singing strange songs. They produce a gas from their gills and tail that induces sleep, and will utilize various types of clams in combat to their advantage. Because of how they sit on their tails and the way they sing, sailors have mistaken them for mermaids.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
The Somnacanth is a truly fascinating wyvern in my book. They move swiftly and elegantly in the water, but on land they are much more cumbersome. Keep Energy Drinks handy when fighting one of these Leviathans to keep from succumbing to the gas they produce to put prey to sleep.
b9a79c2c9f0eeb14a51ee449df823ccc.png

A subspecies of Somnacanth found in arctic environments. Their scales have a much more muted color in comparison to the nominate subspecies. They are much more agile on land than normal Somnacanth, thanks to their ability to produce freezing air that creates ice patches that the Aurora Somnacanth can slide on.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Your average Somnacanth is slow and relatively clumsy on land, but Aurora Somnacanth are masters of sliding on ice to outmaneuver their opponents and prey. Their most common tactic is to use ice to flank an enemy to deliver a blast of their icy breath. Keep on your toes when faced with one of these Leviathans.
Tetranodon.png
Amphibians found in wetlands, Tetranadon will eat almost anything it can swallow. In combat, it will swallow gravel, rocks, and water to increase its bulk, giving it new attacks that can crush a Hunter who isn't quick on their feet. Its movements in battle have inspired a form of sumo wrestling.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
I have a soft spot for these rotund frogs, but they can be quite dangerous and territorial. When a Tetranadon's belly is swollen, it becomes a weak spot. In this state, it's a wise idea to hammer on it until the monster throws up everything in its stomach, which might include precious or semiprecious stones.
Tetsucabra.png
These Amphibians are well-known for their powerful jaws and mighty tusks, which they use to sift through boulders to find prey. Tetsucabra will dig up boulders to use as shields or bludgeons, as well as use their powerful jaws to crush them to injure nearby enemies. Many of their movements have inspired a variety of sumo wrestling.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Tetsucabra are called "Demon Frogs" for a good reason, based on their appearance and their territoriality. That being said, they do have a weakness that can be exploited. When a Tetsucabra picks up a boulder in its jaws, the tip of its tail will become swollen and puffy. In this state, the tail is very sensitive, and hitting it can result in the Tetsucabra dropping its boulder.
Berserk Tetsucabra.png
A subspecies of Tetsucabra that makes use of explosive rocks in combat. One of their most notable characteristics is the markings on their face, which resemble face paint in theater. They are most often found in volcanic regions, but finding them in more forgiving environments, like forests and wetlands, isn't uncommon.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Your average Tetsucabra is known to be grouchy and territorial, but this subspecies is even more so. In the Old World, Berserk Tetsucabra are known to utilize a similar spit attack as the nominal subspecies. Due to the environment in Terrasuzaku, a Berserk Tetsucabra's saliva contains explosive properties that inflict Blastscourge, a more powerful version of Blastblight that causes more damage.
Tigrex.png
Flying Wyverns with many primitive traits seen in the fossils of ancient wyverns. Their front limbs are powerful, and well suited for traversing rugged terrain quickly. Even in comparison to other wyverns, they are highly aggressive, and will attack anything it perceives as a threat on sight. They can be found in almost any environment, from forests and steppes to tundras and mountains.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Tigrex are well known apex predators in both Kamura and Yukumo, and they fill a similar ecological niche in Terrasuzaku as well. While their forelimbs are well developed, they aren't good at flying. Because of how recklessly they attack, Tigrex can wear themselves out quickly, leaving them open to attacks. Some Hunters have discovered that they will eat almost any source of meat in this state, even if it's tainted meat that will induce sleep, poison, or paralysis.
Brute Tigrex.png
A subspecies of Tigrex with black scales that are often found in volcanic regions. Even by Tigrex standards, they are incredibly aggressive, and will attack enemies with reckless abandon, even if that results in it getting hurt. Tigrex are well known for their powerful roar, but Brute Tigrex have outright weaponized their roar to combat opponents.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
The good news: Brute Tigrex tend to be less damage resistant than the nominal subspecies. The bad news: their aggression is off the charts, and their roar can be used as a kind of beam cannon. Yes, you read that correctly: a Brute Tigrex can fire a beam at you of pressurized air. I once talked to a Hunter who fought one, and his words were (and I quote) "What kind of sick, demented deity would give a Tigrex a ranged attack?"
Tobi-Kadachi.png
Fanged Wyverns that live in forests and jungles, Tobi-Kadachis are monsters that glide from tree to tree using skin membranes between their legs. While moving around, they will rub up against trees, collecting static electricity in their fur. Once fully charged their fur will glow brightly. Many of their attacks utilize their powerful tail, including launching electrified quills of fur at their enemy.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Many Kamura residents were very surprised to learn that the Tobi-Kadachi in this region generally tend to be placid if left alone, even to the point of allowing a human to walk within mere feet of them. That being said, they can be quite vicious when provoked. Unfortunately, they tend to be on the receiving end of beatdowns from larger monsters like Rathalos and Anjanath. To dispel the electricity in their fur, hit the Tobi-Kadachi with Water element attacks.
Volvidon.png
Fanged Beasts with thick, lava-resistant carapaces. They move around by curling themselves into a ball and rolling or bouncing. Their diet primarily consists of Neopterans like Altaroth, and they have evolved adaptations to make hunting them easier. They have long, powerful tongues, and their saliva contains paralytic venom.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Rolly-polly monsters known for living in hot environments like deserts, volcanoes, and the occasional jungle. Most of the time they're content to go about their business, eating bugs and digging up roots. However, when confronted by predators or rivals, they will emit an incredibly noxious gas from glands on their body. Try not to get blasted with it, as the stench is so bad that it can make anyone gag if they try to eat or drink anything. Older individuals have been reported to have a paralytic property to this gas.
Yian Garuga.png
These Bird Wyverns are infamous for both their piercing scream and sheer aggression. Seeing a Yian Garuga without scars is incredibly rare, as they will engage almost any other monster in combat if they feel their territory is being invaded. Their hides are surprisingly thick.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Yian Garugas are well known as being stubborn, crafty wyverns; indeed, I've heard more than one story about Garugas refusing to back down from monsters as powerful as Deviljho and Rajang, even if the battle isn't in their favor. They will avoid Pitfall Traps that Hunters place, but Shock Traps will work. The club on their tail is loaded with poison, and they will use them to deadly effect in combat.
Elder Serizawa's Note:
Despite the joke, Yian Garugas are not (and I'm quoting Weyland here) "the unloved, bastard child of a Kut-Ku and a Rathian". This is an old wives' tale that I've been trying to dispel, but everyone still insists that they're a hybrid.
Yian Kut-Ku.png
Bird Wyverns with large, powerful beaks and the ability to spit balls of fire. Though somewhat cowardly, they will splay their ears out when angered. They are quick on their feet, and should not be underestimated. Their diet primarily consists of Konchus.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Grandma Koko once described these monsters as "chickens that wanted to be a Rathalos", and she's not quite wrong. Kut-Kus have very sensitive hearing, so loud sounds like Sonic Bombs can be used to stun them, leaving them open to attacks. According to the elders, Terrasuzakan Kut-Kus have developed a unique strategy when dealing with enemies: they will dig up Konchus, light them on fire, and then spit them at their opponent like a cannonball. It's almost comical to see in action... as long as that Konchu isn't aimed at you.
Zinogre.png
Powerful Fanged Wyverns that thrive in mountainous terrain. These monsters are apex predators that have a symbiotic relationship with Thunderbugs, allowing them to harness the power of electricity to hunt prey and combat rivals.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Elders from both Kamura and Yukumo have a great amount of respect for this monster, and it's easy to see why. They are majestic and and savage, an almost perfect embodiment of the lightning they harness. In order to weaken a ZInogre's electrical attacks, it's advisable to use a net to capture as many Fulgurbugs as possible when a Zinogre is knocked over. It can also be worthwhile to damage the spines on its back that act as Fulgurbug hives.
Stygian Zinogre.png
A subspecies of Zinogre covered in jet-black scales. Unlike regular Zinogres, Stygian Zinogres have a symbiotic relationship with Dracophage Bugs, allowing them to utilize the Dragon Element in combat. It's been theorized that this adaptation has allowed Stygian Zinogres to survive in unforgiving environments like frozen tundras and scorching volacanoes.

Shiori the Biologist's Note:
Any experienced Hunter will tell you that most monsters that use the Dragon Element are also weak to it, but Stygian Zinogre is an exception to this rule. Hitting one with Dragon-infused attacks only charges a Stygian Zinogre faster. It's pretty much the equivalent of trying to use a Shock Trap on a regular Zinogre. Like the main species, Stygian Zinogre can be weakened by taking away their Dracophage Bugs, so net as many as you can if you have an opportunity.
