While the story takes place primarily within The Merrywood Apartments, there are a few nearby settings that will also be featured.
This list will be added to and subtracted from as the story pans out.

Location: Netherland Avenue
Description: The Merrywood Apartment Complex, located on Netherland Avenue in Dawn Chorus, TN, is a historical brownstone apartment building that was erected in 1923 by its founder, Herman Merrywood. The building boasts a beautiful art deco style that has been well-preserved over the years, despite the wear and tear of time. The Merrywood was once one of the most luxurious buildings in Dawn Chorus, but as of 1983, it has seen better days and has become quite rundown.

Despite its current condition, The Merrywood still maintains a sense of grandeur and elegance that hints at its former glory. The building stands tall at eight stories high, with an additional basement level. The thirty-six units that make up the complex are spread out over the various floors and offer a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments. Each unit has a unique layout and character, with original features such as high ceilings and decorative moldings still intact.

The exterior of the building is adorned with intricate details, including ornate stonework and grand entryways. The main lobby of The Merrywood is equally impressive, featuring a grand chandelier that once shone bright but now flickers dimly. Despite the wear and tear of time, the building is still a sight to behold, and it's clear that it was once a place of luxury and prestige.

 

Location: Entryway
Description: The entry lobby of The Merrywood Apartment Complex is a small but grand space that exudes an air of faded opulence. As you step inside, you're greeted by a dimly-lit room with high ceilings and ornate crown moldings that are chipped and peeling in places. The walls are painted in dark shades, and while the paint is faded and cracked in some areas, it still manages to lend an air of elegance to the space.

Directly ahead of you is a rickety old elevator with metal gates that creak loudly as they slide open and closed. The elevator is a remnant of a bygone era, and its brass buttons and dials have long since lost their shine. The elevator itself is just big enough to fit a few people comfortably, and its interior is adorned with faded red carpeting and gold-colored paneling.

Above the elevator hangs a grand chandelier, its once-shimmering crystals now dulled and covered in a layer of dust. The chandelier is the centerpiece of the room, and its intricate design and intricate detailing are evidence of the building's former grandeur. Despite its current state of disrepair, the chandelier still manages to cast a warm glow over the room, adding to the space's cozy and inviting atmosphere.

The lobby is sparsely furnished, with a few faded armchairs and a small table situated near the elevator. A few old paintings and photographs adorn the walls, but they too have suffered the ravages of time and are now faded and yellowed. Despite its faded glory, however, the entry lobby of The Merrywood Apartment Complex still manages to evoke a sense of history and elegance, and it's clear that this was once a place of great importance and prestige.

 

Location: All floors
Description: The hallways of The Merrywood Apartment Complex are long, narrow, and dimly lit, with a series of wooden doors leading to the various apartments lining each side. The walls are painted a dark, muted shade of brown, which has faded over time and is now marked by scuffs and scratches. The floors are covered in a faded red carpet, which is worn thin in places.

As you make your way down the hallway, the creaking sound of the old wooden floorboards echoes beneath your feet. The dim lighting provided by a series of flickering sconces on the walls creates an eerie atmosphere, adding to the sense that the building is frozen in time.

Despite its current state of disrepair, the hallway still retains a sense of grandeur, with tall ceilings adorned with ornate crown moldings and decorative light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. Old paintings and photographs adorn the walls, offering a glimpse into the building's past and the lives of its former residents.

 

Location: The basement
Description: The basement common area of The Merrywood Apartment Complex is a dimly-lit space that is accessible by a narrow staircase located at the back of the building. As you descend the stairs, you're greeted by the musty smell of old books and furniture, and the sound of muffled voices emanating from the basement.

The common area is a open space that serves as a communal gathering place for the building's residents. The walls are made of exposed brick, and the floors are left as rough concrete. There are several old, worn sofas and armchairs scattered around the room, offering a place for residents to sit and socialize. An old coffee tables and bookshelves filled with dusty volumes complete the space. The room is lit by a few overhead fluorescent lights that cast a harsh, industrial glow. A television set that only works when its raining sits against the far wall.

Despite its shabby appearance, the basement common area is a popular spot for residents to gather and chat. It's not uncommon to see small groups of tenants huddled around a table, playing cards or board games, or engrossed in conversation. The space also serves as a venue for community events, such as potluck dinners or holiday parties.

 

Location: The basement
Description: The maintenance office of The Merrywood Apartment Complex is a small, cramped room located in the basement of the building. It's accessible through a narrow door near the common area and is marked by a faded sign reading "Maintenance Office" above it.

The room itself is sparsely furnished, with a small wooden desk situated against one wall and a few metal filing cabinets scattered around the room. A fluorescent light overhead casts over the space, making it feel stark and sterile.

Despite its small size, the maintenance office is packed with various tools, spare parts, and supplies that the building's maintenance staff use to keep the complex running smoothly. Shelves line the walls, filled with cans of paint, boxes of light bulbs, and rolls of duct tape. In one corner, a workbench is covered in tools, including hammers, wrenches, and pliers.

The office also serves as a hub for communication between the maintenance staff and the building's residents. A bulletin board on one wall is covered in notices and memos regarding upcoming repairs, building-wide announcements, and other important information.

 

Location: The basement
Description: As you step beyond the maintenance office and into the basement proper, the atmosphere changes dramatically. The dimly-lit corridor stretches out before you, lined with uneven cement that lead into a winding maze of shadowy tunnels and rooms.

The air is heavy and musty, with the scent of dampness and decay lingering in every corner. The walls are made of ancient, crumbling brick, and the only light sources come from the flickering bulbs of rusting light fixtures are bolted into the ceiling.

As you navigate the twisting corridors, you begin to notice strange markings etched into the brickwork. These symbols are arcane and unfamiliar, their twisted shapes and cryptic glyphs sending shivers down your spine.

You come across abandoned rooms filled with old furniture, dust-covered boxes, and other items that have long since been forgotten. The further you venture into the depths of the basement, the more the passageways twist and turn, leading you deeper into the labyrinthine maze.

Despite the eerie atmosphere, you hear the faint sound of whispers and footsteps echoing from the darkness ahead, suggesting that there may be other inhabitants lurking in the shadows...

 

Location: The top floor
Description: The rooftop deck of The Merrywood Apartment Complex is a favorite spot for tenants to gather and enjoy the stunning views of Dawn Chorus, TN. While tenants of apartments 8A and 8B have door access to the roof, everyone else is able to climb a narrow staircase located on the seventh floor to get there.

As you step onto the rooftop, you're immediately struck by the breathtaking vista that stretches out before you. The deck offers panoramic views of Netherland Avenue and the surrounding mountains, making it an ideal spot to catch the sunrise or sunset.

The deck itself is relatively small, with just enough room for a few small groups to gather without feeling too cramped. Fold-out chairs and furniture from god-knows-where dot the space as well as an old, rusting grill that looks like it hasn't been cleaned in decades.

A few potted plants and flowers line the perimeter of the rooftop, adding a touch of greenery to the space and softening the harsh edges of the concrete walls. Stamped out cigarette butts litter the pavement as fairy lights flicker overhead.

Location: Netherland Avenue
Description: The Palace is a dive bar located just across the street from The Merrywood Apartment Complex. The exterior of the building is weathered and worn, with peeling paint and a faded neon sign that flickers intermittently.

As you step inside, the dim lighting and smoky atmosphere immediately transport you to another world. The air is thick with the scent of stale beer and cigarette smoke, and the walls are lined with old beer signs, memorabilia, and framed photos of local patrons.

The bar itself is long and narrow, with a few tables and booths scattered around the edges of the room. The bartenders are gruff and no-nonsense, and the regulars at the bar all seem to know each other by name.

The jukebox is always playing classic rock and country tunes, and there's usually a game on one of the televisions mounted on the walls. The menu is simple and unpretentious, with a few bar snacks and standard pub fare like burgers, fries, and wings.

 

Location: Netherland Avenue
Description: Sgt. Pepperoni's Lonely Hearts Club Pizza is a pizza parlor located just down the street from The Merrywood Apartment Complex. The exterior of the building is painted a bright red and adorned with colorful murals of cartoon characters and pizza slices.

The interior is spacious and brightly lit, with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The walls are decorated with vintage music posters and album covers, paying homage to The Beatles.

The menu at Sgt. Pepperoni's is extensive, with a wide variety of pizza toppings and styles to choose from, as well as salads, sandwiches, and appetizers. The pizzas are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients and cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven, resulting in a crispy crust and perfectly melted cheese.

Some say its the best pizza in the world. Not many, but some do.
