The Lyonesse has it's crew divided into four general sections based on the type of work they will be doing. There can and usually is a bit of overlap in the sections, for example a botanist can be in the science or surveying section depending on if they prefer lab or field work. There is a fifth group that currently will not be included in the story as playable characters, Civilians.
Science: These are the individuals that are tasked with running the labs at the base camp, doing tests, experiments, and generally dissecting the new world to see how it works and if people can survive there, as well as making new innovations along the way.
Security: These individuals are tasked with the safety of the crew both from potential outside threats and internal strife.
Surveying: These individuals are the explorers of the crew, it is their job to go out and search for resources, points of interest, and potential building sites for the expansion of the colony and report back to the base bringing as many samples with them as possible. Many in this section are scientists that are field researchers and do better outside of the lab than in it.
Support: These are the individuals that don't fit into the other sections but are essential. Cooks, constructors, aids, medics, lab techs and the such.

Small Background: Sam was born on Earth in the South Eastern Megacity of North America. His parents were both musicians for a band that gained it's fame from their live performances for the EUF, Earth's Ultimate Fighter. Sam grew up watching these fights and attending all the shows his parents played, his intense interest in both worlds never waning as he grew up. When he was around 10 some of the fighters and trainers began letting Sam join them for basic workouts, careful not to push the kid. By the time he was 15 Sam was sparing in the ring with some of the fighters and even got taken along on training camps with the blessings of his parents. At 17 same was picked up by a 'legendary' trainer and spent most of year away.
On his 18th birthday Sam R I had his EUF debut and won with an incredibly fierce knock out. As soon as the bell rang Sam threw and landed a vicious left hook followed immediately with a head kick to the same side of the head. The match was only a handful of seconds long and Sam's opponent was carried out with a major concussion, shattered jaw, fractured orbital bone, and minor whiplash. Sam dominated the EUF for the next 6 years before retiring with a record of 57 wins, 0 losses, 33 knockouts.
The EUF spun some reason for him leaving to fit a narrative, but the truth was Sam had gotten bored and wanted a bigger challenge. He also wanted his fighting to mean something. So the 24 year old joined the United Earth Coalition Army. Basic training was almost a joke to him, having undergone years of intense physical training from his previous career. Catching the attention of some higher ups Sam was referred to a special training regiment. Still impressing those above he was again moved this time to a completely new place. The next two years Sam was trained to be one of the most capable soldiers in the system.
16 years of doing things that have to be toned down to make believable movies out of Sam was retired after a rather sever injury. Once recovered Sam decided to leave the planet. He joined up with a private militia that helped police the colonies between Earth and the Moon. He was involved in a handful of skirmishes and a full on pirate raid. After the events of the pirate raid Sam made his way to the moon, where he got himself involved in a civil war of sorts. It was between the Mooners, those that were born, raised or lived full time on the moon, and Corps, people sent from Earth by giant corporations that 'owned' the moon colonies. Sam fought for the Mooners, believing their families had long ago earned those lands and the greedy mega corps could fuck right off.
The war took four years and was pretty messy. Earth's military stayed out of it, claiming it to be a private affair between the Corporations and the Moon colonies. Shortly after the end of the war Sam returned to space as part of a new militia crew and made his way through the colonies to Mars. It was during that time that he lost his taste of being a soldier. The full story is something Sam refuses to share but the incident was well known. A large colony was exposed to an infectious bioweapon and the colony was deemed lost and ordered to be purged. Though not personally, the ship Sam was on was part of the firing squad that destroyed the colony. He watched 2 billion lives get snuffed out in a few moments.
Having seen enough bad shit in his life Sam went planet side and checked himself into a hospital for a short stay. After getting the clear leave the ward and walk the halls as a regular patent he met a young girl, Regina Reynolds. They talked with each other easily somehow. Sam opening up and sharing the vague shape of his life while she shared hers and why she was there. She was there for her father. He was sick with cancer and wasn't doing so well. Sam found out he knew of her father, he was a famous journalist and anthropologist Roy Reynolds. He spent his life traveling the system and writing about the people that inhabited it. A week after meeting Regina her father passed away leaving the girl alone in the system. Inheriting everything the now obscenely rich orphan turned to the only person nearby that she knew.
The 46 year old Samuel Rodger Ingle accepted the job of being some strange 16 year old girls personal body guard. Regi had plans of her own and Sam was happy to follow along, mostly because those plans didn't involve violence. Or people really. Regi wanted to photograph the places left behind by humans. They started with the abandoned Martian Colony. After a fungal infection in the crops that wiped them out the colony couldn't recover in a timely or costly way so they left it all behind and moved to other colonies nearby. The photos of the spread of the fungus throughout the colony and it's effect on the place won her an award. The fungus was breaking down the synthetic materials in the colony, the very structure included. It took two weeks of quarantine before they were cleared to reenter any occupied colony.
Sam spent the next 3 years traveling the system with Regi living a mostly peaceful life, finding old, lost, and forgotten places and giving them a little life and attention. It helped Sam heal he felt. They made their way all the way back to Earth were Regi pushed to be one of the first people to take photos in the newly opened Non Populated Zone that was the old worlds Western Europe and parts of Eastern Russia. A severe conflict in the past left the area unlivable for humans so they world government sanctioned the land off until a time came when it was safe to reclaim it. 3 years they roamed the seemingly endless forest going from city to city using old world maps to the best of their abilities. Sam treated it like a three year camping trip as they explored a lost corner of his home.
It was only a couple weeks after they finally returned to civilization that Regi found out about the deep space colonization and asked Sam to go with her. Having been all though the system already, he figured why not go on this new adventure.
Crew Section: Security
Personality Under Pressure: Sam is trained to thrive under pressure. The more intense the situation the more focused and motivated he becomes.
Personality In Calm Situations: A bit standoffish but not rude. Is willing to join group conversations and usually gets pulled into them anyways by Regina.
Music:
Additional Information: During his six years exploring with Regina he picked up playing the guitar.
Small Background: Regina Reynolds is the daughter of the late Roy Reynolds, system famous journalist and anthropologist. Regi never knew her mother and grew up traveling the system with her father. She lived a very happy life, and when she was 8 she asked for a camera so she could take pictures of all the pretty things she saw. Over the years Regina's love for photography grew and her father nurtured this passion and every year for her birthday got her a new, better camera or set of lenses. Eventually Regina's work began to feature with her father's articles and she started to gain attention in her own right.
When Regi turned 15 they found out her father had cancer. A tumor in his brain. Instead of spending his remaining time on a ship heading back to Earth Roy chose to do a final piece on the founding colonies of Mars. Regi worked along side him photographing the entire process, working on a project of her own. The trip had to be cut short and Roy nearly didn't finish his piece before loosing the strength to write. He lived a few more months before slipping into a coma. It was during that time she met Sam. They talked everyday for hours at a time, two strangers experiencing one of the worst periods of their lives, just enjoying the company of a stranger. Then her dad passed and she was alone in the system, but she had his last wish already. To never stop exploring and showing the beauty of the system to the people.
Having more money than a 16 year old orphan knew what to rightfully do with she went and found Sam. He was the closest person she knew of that would be possibly willing to help her. Explaining her situation to the man and her desire to keep traveling and taking photos he surprised her by agreeing. Over the next six years Regi dragged Sam all across the system all the way back to Earth where she spent 3 years in the wilds of the NPZ of old Western Europe where she photographed the new evolution paths of the local plant and wildlife.
During her time in the NPZ Regi took on an interest in Botany, zoology and archaeology studying them in her free time but never becoming an expert in any field. Her photos won her countless awards and accolades but none of those were important to her. She was forever eager to find the next discovery. After returning to society she found out about the deep space colonization program.
Crew Section: Survey
Personality Under Pressure: Outwardly Regi will put up a tough front and try to act collected in a tense situation, mostly emulating how she thinks Sam would behave even if internally she is a shaking mess.
Personality In Calm Situations: Ultra inquisitive. Regi wants to know everything about anything and isn't afraid to ask questions and just talk to learn.
When the Biotechnical firm of Gordon & Fukashima founded the idea of the Human Replicant series, few imagined the technology would reach the scale of current day. With the arrival of the HR-800 series, Replicants have achieved a near seemless blend with human life. Their processors enabling for active learning over a period of time. This of course is within safety parameters to avoid an issue in sentience. Overall, the company was quite fond of putting forward a set of the new batch for the maiden voyage of the Lyonesse.
'Are we just the sum of our parts?'
Model 36 was one of these hand gifted models. 36 of the HR-800 series started life within the Gordon & Fukashima Deep Blue Facility within the Pacific Ocean. Developed in Lab Room #743, the initial strands of its personality were woven together. 36 would be masculine by design and assigned with the name Cole Laurence. It's primary code insisting it maintain it was Cole Laurence of Northeast Megacity 8. A fictitious past of being born to parents Johnathan and Heather Laurence, leaving home for Colonial Military conscription and eventually signing on to the Lyonesse for an attempt to make a new life for themselves.
"Cole" was approved for assembly by Spring of the next year. His skeletal structure put into the forging process out of the Ferris Steel and Metallurgy facilities on the Epsilon Foundry Colony of Mars. His inner workings later manufactured on Saturn's Colony Moon of Titan. Finally, his processor components and "heart" were manufactured in the Megacities which had once formed the backbone of the automobile industry. Final assembly took place on Indo-Pacfic Megacity 1 before artifical skin was finally applied. Cole's first moments of consciousness were waking up to the sterile lights of a holding bay.
From there is was skills testing off assembly. Specific variables were tested giving him a better idea of his design features. Shooting, grappling and hand to hand featured heavily throughout. Less then stellar runs being repeated to achieve higher performance totals. This occurring after he would be subject to recalibration through new programming. Through days and nights on a round the clock shifts, Cole whole life and what he knew was tailored. For a machine going through the motions, it was quite natural.
By the end of Summer, Cole was projected to launch on schedule. Signed, sealed and delivered by shuttle to the Lyonesse with nothing but a duffle bag alongside the clothes on his back. He supposed he looked every part the soldier turned drifter he had been assigned to be. He was there to help where he could, befriend he can and if need be, act as an expendable asset. Yet a glitch in the system would provide a ghost of something else hidden among the code...
Crew Section: Security
Personality Under Pressure:
Under pressure is where Cole is intended to shine compared to most biological life forms. This is due to the fact, for the most part while can replicate emotion, he does not 'feel' them like a human would. Things like fear and stress are pushed aside for hardwired code and logic. This is helpful in the sense Cole is quick to respond to danger and can usually tackle it very efficiently. This is not so helpful when trying to account for emotional responses or flexibility outside the regulation.
Personality In Calm Situations:
Cole is very interesting in comparison to other models. His personality is somewhat more cool and reserved then most of his fellow crew mates. He'd ultimately never be the first to start a conversation, but could happily chat along with it. He is well versed socially, and can mimic human emotion quite well. The android can be said to be far more innocent than many of his counterparts in security and does miss social cues. Things like slang and innuendo going right over his head in understanding. All the same, a rather strange development is 36's want to be referred to as Cole even by those who know it's origin. A strong general preference to be considered human exhibited as well. Above all, Cole Laurence is loyal to the crew above and beyond the standard.
Music:
Some songs that were good to get the mindset for writing were:
Henrick is a clinical man and a perfectionist. His job as one of the many ships doctors suggesting a sort of coolness even under the pressures of operation. Even under the rigors of his duties, he likes to maintain order in the chaos. Choosing to lead through experience and leading Socratic style questions when looking to get his way. However, pressure can lead the man to turn to blunt and cold assessments even to his closest peers. While this is by no means the reflection of how he feels about a certain individual, it is a habit he openly admits he is trying to correct in due time. When it comes to keeping things afloat in even the worst situations however, Henrick is often the first some turn to.
Personality In Calm Situations:
Doctor Meyer was always a stoic individual outwardly. However, a few things stand out about the good Doctor. While he struggles to show it often, Meyer does deeply care for each of his patients on a personal level. Taking it upon himself to learn about each one who walks through his door. He is a man of few words, but he takes his job extremely seriously. He also tends to be a solid source of worldly advice, as Henrick is very adverse to offering anything less than the truth. This can lead to some extremely blunt exchanges, but the man will be the last person to lie to you. As a more negative point, Henrick does suffer from what is a minor god complex given his former line of work as a surgeon. While it's on its way out of his system due to his age, he does tend to have flashes of it. It does give him quite a bit of self confidence however.
