Charlotte was accepted into the Royal Ballet's Junior program in London, England, at age six and trained for four years. She entered the 11 to 16-year program but gave up dancing to pursue a career in astrophysics. Fawkes kept up with dance by including it in her exercise routine.
As she already knew mathematics and physics, Charlotte pursued a Ph.D. in astrophysics at Cambridge University. Upon graduation, she was hired as a researcher for the Department of Theoretical Physics at the CERN Physics Department in Switzerland. Later she returned to Cambridge to teach.
