Chapter 1: The Hunt

It had begun and Kira was on the run. This wasn’t the first time she was in such a situation, but it was the first time they actually made a hit and wounded her. The shot fired in your general direction had hit her leathery bat wing. Footsteps could be her chasing behind her with every crunch of a leaf and crack of a twig beneath her feet. Without thinking she held in pain not realizing how badly her wing had been hit. She had tried to flutter and take flight but with the rip caused by the bullet that ran through it made it impossible for her to use that as a getaway plan. All she had was as fast as her legs could carry her through the trees. Humans would not leave her kind alone and all they wanted to do was live in peace.

How dare they invade her home? She wasn’t bothering anyone in her cave until they showed up. Kira just couldn’t catch her breath or a break as she ran zigzagging through the forest hoping the dogs they had with them would lose their scent. Why did they want her anyways? Humans just couldn’t mind their own business. All she wanted to do is sleep and here she was running for her life. She was trying to mask her scent by running through a nearby creek. Maybe that would at least hide the scent of her blood dripping from her wing that was sagging behind her. Taking her chances she’d run into what looked like an abandoned cabin. Maybe they wouldn’t look there especially if she left the door open. Taking a moment to run through the grass run backwards and retrace her footsteps and taking three or four different directions before she would mask the footsteps going into the cabin and hopefully any blood dripping falling behind her. So far she saw no one in this cabin and she assumed it was abandoned. The door was unlocked and what she did once inside sheets slowly close the door tiptoeing and finding a nearby closet and hiding inside. She couldn’t pick up any human scent in here or maybe she was just too tired to even check either way she was out of the woods and now hiding in a closet on the first floor. Praying to her God that they wouldn’t search in here and maybe whoever owns this cabin would not come back anytime soon.

Curling up to make herself as small as possible folding up her good wing and placing her hand over her lips to make sure she’s whimper too much as she try to move her broken wing to a corner. Taking slow and steady deep breaths to try and dull the pain she felt shooting through every bit of her body. She was so alone and this is her first time on her own since she matured and left her parents nest. Trembling fearing tonight was that her last on this earth she hoped the small refuge would at least last through the night.

Outside she could hear the humans trying to track her in the parking of hunting dogs. They still weren’t giving up on catching her into the last thing she wanted was for them to get a hold of her. Kira had heard stories of what they did to her kind putting them in services inside shows and experimenting with them. She would rather die than become someone’s experiment so for the time being she stayed as quiet as she could listening to see if the hunting dogs and hunters would eventually leave so she could find her way back to her cave and try to mend herself and broken wing.

It was hunting season, one of the more annoying perks living in a forest upon the outskirts of a small town. Chester was an exception when it came to the season. He had come from a busy city and happily welcomed the quiet life in nature. The shack he had bought from a man who had passed on was still as sturdy as the day it was built. During this season he would often hear gunshots and hunting dogs, but for the rest of the year, nature filled his senses. Chester had been out in the town buying some groceries for the day. A rainstorm would be coming in a few days so he'd rather get his shopping done while he still had the chance of staying dry.

Standing around six feet tall, he sported an athletic body. He had filled out a bit once he discovered he had to chop his own wood for the winter. Not that he was complaining about having some muscles. A grey t-shirt was draped over it, as well as a nice fitting pair of dark blue jeans covered the bottom half. Hiking boots topped off his attire for that evening, they were well worn and comfortable. He easily lifted the grocery bags and made his way home. It wasn't too far from town and walking wasn't a problem. The sounds of hunting dogs echoed throughout the forest. This time near where he lived but the hunters wouldn't dare enter his yard. With all the "Do Not Trespass" signs around Chester wanted his quiet. It seemed though that the hunters had moved on and were now deeper in the forest. Maybe he'd actually get a decent night's sleep this time. Something felt off however, when he opened his door that evening.

The faint smell of blood filled his nostrils. Had those annoying hunters chased something into his home? It wouldn't have been the first time, but it was annoying. The sound of his boots moving around would ensure to his intruder that his cabin wasn't abandoned. Locking the door behind him he started a fire in the hearth to get some heat flowing, as well as turning on some of the lights so he can put his groceries away. It was then he noticed a small trail of blood droplets lead all the way to a closet. His pantry more or less, and unfortunate for Kira he would open the door a few moments later. Chester wasn't one to believe in her race's existence. Though he had heard legends of bat humanoids wandering this forest. Killing and eating anyone who got close. Still those were legends. His handsome dark blue eyes met Kira's and she could see how ruggedly handsome his face was. Short caramel brown hair danced around his head and settled in places that added to his charm. His eyes stared widely as the girl in the bat costume. "You shouldn't be going around dressed like that." he said to her warmly in a deep velvet voice, "The Hunters around here might mistake you for prey." Chester stated as he knelt down to get a closer look.

Chester couldn't believe what he was seeing. There were no strings or straps or wires, her ears and wings seemed attached to her head. More importantly he noticed one of her wings seemed broken and bloody. A soft blush fell upon his face noticing how beautiful she was. Like a porcelain doll dressed up like a bat. A wave of concern washed over him. If she was some kind of strange creature the hunters would return. No doubt the dogs had her scent as well. His eyes filled with concern and kindness as he began to reach out to touch her damaged wing gently. Chester would have to apply first aid but first he needed to see what kind of damage he was dealing with. "Don't worry I'm not going to hurt you." he softly cooed hoping she wouldn't try to hurt him too much.

For now the closet was home and safety and for some reason the hunters did not enter this house lucky for her. The only bad thing was her wings were still dripping blood and she was feeling weak as well as agitated. Keeping as quiet as she could she hid in the back of the closet which would turn out to be more of a pantry but she didn’t pay much attention as long as no one came in.

What happened next when she heard footsteps making sure she kept even more quiet hoping whoever was here would go. The sounds of dogs were off in the distance so she figured it couldn’t be a hunter. Well honestly she wasn’t sure because the hunter could’ve left the dog behind but she thought she covered her blood trail as best she could. Kira was exhausted and weak. What is that light creature with the great legs to keep hidden and undetected but with the door of the closet open she let out a guttural growl and a hissing type sound at whatever was looking at her.

A warning to stay away. For now all she did was make warning sounds hoping this human will get the idea to back away from her. She was cornered and that was not a good thing for her to be as she lifted both hands in defense claws out and pointed at him. Along her pale porcelain arms there were long scratches that were bright red and angry from the tree scratching her at her running. “Stay away……” in a low growl she hissed at him when he started talking to her. Her kind didn’t take kindly to speaking to humans especially since they were out to get them and wipe them out. It was probably a surprise to Chester that she could even talk.

Even though his voice was kind when he reached out to try and assess her wing she would claw him or attempt to she wasn’t sure if she hit him or not and if she did it wouldn’t of been very deep it was a warning shot. More like a cat would do if they were scared to try to make whoever was trying to pick them up or touch them move away and give them space. Kira didn’t even know if the strike landed she was so disoriented. “Stay back hunter…..baaaaaccckkkk.” Her voice is low and using a deep growl to try and scare him off that’s all she could think of to do. Maybe if she scared him he’d run away and let her stay in her hidden closet not thinking that this was his house she thought it was abandoned she didn’t know why he was here.

Chester tried his best to pull away, but she managed to scratch him before he could. Wincing a little he wasn't afraid of her. Still no amount of kind words would probably get her to calm down. What annoyed him a little was that she considered him a hunter. Chester wasn't a saint, but the thought of hunting animals wasn't something he was in to. Well, if words weren't something that could get through to this mysterious woman, with bat appendages; then, maybe food would? Slowly standing he let her be for a moment, probably giving her a false sense of victory. Walking around the small kitchen he searched around and spotted some fruit in a basket on his counter. Pulling a few apples from it, Chester quietly walked back over to her.

Holding one of them out to Kira the Human smiled warmly. "You must be hungry. Here this is for you." he calmly spoke. Whether or not she wanted the apple was up to the strange woman. A knock upon the door pulled him from interacting with Kira. Setting the apple down in front of her, he gently closed the door leaving a small crack before he stood. Placing a rug down where some of the blood droplets were the knock on the door seemed to get louder. "In a minute!" he called out quietly moving some of the furniture around to cover as much as he could.

Opening the door one of the hunters stood before him. A gruff looking unshaven man with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. "I hate to bother ya on a quiet night like tonight, but there's a bat creature on the loose." the man stated glancing from side to side. Fortunately for Kira none of the dogs were with this hunter.

"Bat...Creature?" Chester replied raising one of his eye brows. Almost doing his best to stifle a laugh. The Hunter nodded doing his best to peer over Chester's shoulder to get a glimpse of the room behind him. Only causing Chester to close the gap as best he could.

"The boys and I were huntin' one earlier!" he stated spreading his arms out. "Wings this big, attached to the body of a beautiful woman."

"Uhhh....huh....are you sure you aren't sleep deprived?" Chester mused lightly, "Bat women don't exist."

The hunter frowned and stomped his foot in between the young man's legs. "Now listen Son, I'm not crazy! There are creatures in this world that are worth a fortune!" the man stated wagging his finger at Chester while giving his bushy moustache a wiggle in protest. "Legendary beauties living right under our noses! I'm part of an organization that rounds them up and sells them on a market. Let me tell you, I've seen some crazy things." Chester moved back a little as the man pulled the cigarette from his mouth and gave it a soft wiggle, before taking another puff.

One of the other hunters stood behind the man. "Leave him alone Dave! The hounds just picked up a scent in the southern end of this forest!" the man called out. Dave looked back and nodded but gave a look of suspicion towards Chester.

"Listen here Sonny, don't say I didn't warn you! Make fun of this old coot all you want but there are creatures in this world that are slowly being brought into the light." he nodded before flicking the old cigarette into his yard and turned to join his friend. Chester watched the two men leave before shutting and locking his door.

Letting out a heavy sigh of relief he turned his gaze back towards the cupboard that housed his unexpected guest. So she was being chased by hunters? Would she have been sold to a market if she was caught? Now his head was full of so many questions. Questions only she could answer.

Kira managed to get a swipe at him when he got close enough she was terrified and the fact that she was cornered made her even more dangerous even when injured. When the strange human decided to leave she thought she got a victory but he did ask if she was hungry and she didn’t answer but when he returned with an apple she would reach out and snatch it from wherever he left it and began wildly eating it.

Letting Chester close the door leave it open just a crack she was focus more in the food since she was actually starving from running so much but the moment the knock at the door key she froze and cornered herself even more in the closet. Those voices she heard were the hunters that were chasing her and the last thing she wanted was to be caught.

The bat like creature stayed silent and she held her apple close to her chest and stopped chewing I didn’t make a sound folding her wings but we break at the hurt one. She went as silent as a bear hibernate in the winter hoping those hunters did not hear her and she heard Chester talking to them but what he did surprised her.

This straight human did not just hand her over or tell them where she was. She sat in silence clinging to her sweet apple and peek out of the crack of the closet. Chester’s voice was soothing but it was also nice to hear that he was not going to just hand her over.

The big ears a top her head with twitch as she listens waiting for those hunters to leave and she couldn’t hear their dogs which was a good thing. If those dogs had heard her or picked up percent she would’ve been done for. For now she waited for Chester to close the door and once he did she would go back to eating her apple.

Upon hearing the door close she would slowly scoot over to the crack of the closet opening it very slowly. “Gone? Hunters. Are they gone. Bad men…bad very bad men.” this strange bat like creature could talk but she wasn’t saying much but hoping to capture Chester’s attention to find out if her attackers had left or what she had to make a run again. Hoping they left but honestly she really cannot run with that injury on her wing. For the time being this mysterious creature was grounded.

He took a moment to let this odd reality sink in. So Demi Human's existed after all. What was next? Was Bigfoot going to appear in his front yard in a bikini? He quietly chuckled at that image the sound of the cabinet slowly opening. Turning his eyes to stare at the timid woman he frowned a bit in concern. She had been chased and probably shot at. Hunters weren't all that bad, since they sort of kept nature in balance a little. The ones that were hunting her weren't normal though. Chester walked over and once again squatted at the cracked door. He would allow her to open it if she wanted to. "Yes they're gone, you're safe." he replied kindly, for now...

No doubt they would return. He would have to help her back into the wild as fast as he could. Yet she looked wounded so depending on how severe it was she would have to live here with him until she recovered. It seemed like she liked fruit so feeding her wouldn't be too hard. She could also take the room in the loft. The only window being on the roof, so she could enjoy darkness and privacy while she recovered. Darkness, with the lights on now she probably felt exposed. Standing once more Chester turned them off, leaving the room they were in pitch black. He returned to the cabinet hoping that would make her feel a little better.

"Would you like anymore?" he calmly asked. Chester wasn't sure if she had been hunted long or not, but he felt like helping this demi human out. Calling her a creature would be flat out rude and he had enough scratches for one night. "My name is Chester by the way." he smiled hoping he still didn't seem too threatening to her.

Kira wasn’t used to interacting with humans much at all. Her parents instilled in her a healthy fear of humans into her especially hunters. Always be careful was their motto and Kira had no idea how they even found her new home. This was her first time striking it out alone and it went horribly wrong.

Peeking through the crack as this mysterious humanoid continued to eat her sweet treat. “Can’t go home. They found my home….why?” asking Chester in a soft voice. It held a deep sadness mixed with pain. Every time she moved he could hear her wince with how badly her wing hurt.

Chester was smart to turn off all of the lights giving her eyes a break. This strange beauty was a nocturnal creature and once he did that he heard her sigh with sense of relief. Crunching filled his ears as she ate the majority of the apple and most of the core leaving only the stem and seeds. “I can have more? Please…..apple….” her speech pattern was a bit off but she knew how to communicate though lacked practice. This human wasn’t shooting at he and he was giving her food. Maybe this was a good one. Still wary as she pushed the door open a bit more to look at him. “You…you help Kira. Yes? No loud magic. Loud magic hurts.” what this bat humanoid was describing was a gun and this Chester creature wasn’t using it on her and maybe he wouldn’t but she was still rather scared and refused to leave the dark closer with her wing ripped to the point that she couldn’t even fly.

Kira? Was that her name? It was pretty cute. He couldn't answer her first question poor woman seemed so upset. She had been chased from her home even if he were to bring her back there, she only would be hunted once more. Possibly captured. Chester wanted to protect Kira, even though they had just met. He couldn't see that well in the dark but did notice how pretty her eyes were. Her voice wasn't too bad either, glancing away his cheeks felt a little hot. Was he blushing? She politely asked for more, obviously she was hungry. Standing he found his way into the kitchen and turned on a small light so it would barely enter the room she was in but give him a decent view of the room so he wouldn't stub his foot.

Returning to her with a basket of fruit Chester gently reached up and placed his hand on the top of her head, between her ears. Smiling warmly he placed the basket in front of her and nodded. "Eat your fill, the loud magic is gone. I don't use it because I don't hunt." he softly spoke to her hoping he wasn't scaring her anymore. "Yes I will help Kira. Will you let me help?" he asked noticing her wing had been damaged the most. It was ripped in a few spots and looked ruffled. He had some first aid supplies so hopefully he could patch her wing up a bit to help it heal. Gently rubbing the top of her head he would first just leat her eat her fill.

Once she could fly again he'd lead her to a safe place so she could fly away. Maybe to a part of the forest where no one would bother her. Chester was still so curious about her, this was the first time he had seen a woman with bat wings and ears. Maybe he'd get to know a bit about her people while she recovered.

“Chester. No loud magic. I don’t like loud magic.” he could see her eyes glowing from the dark. She had a lovely shade deep emerald green that he could see glowing. This time she didn’t try to lash out at him at all. This time she crawled closer to the door to look out at this human. He wasn’t trying yo hurt her or even put chains on her. Offering food did at least get her to easily warm up to him. Even in great pain her voice as soft. This creature was a soft spoken one and considering that she only lashed out because she was terrified and cornered said a lot about this mysterious creature.

Those emerald green eyes of hers watched Chester as he left and disappeared to do something but upon his return he came with a basket of fruit. He could hear her sniffing around the door opened a bit more to see what he brought. The lights are off and it was easier for her to see. With that offering Kira didn’t even flinch when he started rubbing her head and ears which was surprisingly soft for a bat creature and a bit fuzzy. Her long dark hair was just a soft but this time she leaned into his touch as she reached out to take another apple. “You? You help Kira. No hurt?” her speaking was pretty broken since it gave away how little Communication she had with humans. Her parents taught her enough to survive but even they were hidden. With another apple in hand she moves closer and open the door all the way coming out and sitting on her knees and this time giving Chester a good view of how damaged her poor wing was. One part was completely ripped down the center and she couldn’t even fold it closed. He would have to be careful with touching it since it might make her flinch or jump as it still tripped blood on his floor.

His heart sank, how could someone so innocent be treated so badly? He was gentle with the head patting and her ears. So she was some kind of bat woman? Her eyes were pretty, and he couldn't help but get lost in their glow a bit. The Human was shocked at how damaged her wing was. He would have to be extra cautious. Yet he would need to get her to trust him enough to apply first aid to her wing. "I want to help you Kira." he softly replied with a stand. "I want to put medicine on your wing, but the medicine might sting a little."

Leaving her to eat the fruit until she felt sated or full, he began to search for his first aid kit. She would need gauze and an herbal paste he had learned to make. It was a natural cure shown by a friend of his before he left the city. He grabbed a pair of leather gloves and made his way back to her. Placing the first aid supplies near them he gently opened the door a bit more. Putting on his gloves he smiled. "I'm going to use this on your wing, to stop the bleeding." he spoke showing her the gaze and paste. "It's medicine that will help you." Chester wasn't sure if he could touch her wing, but there wasn't any other way. If it didn't mend properly she probably wouldn't be flying ever again. If only he had a natural medicine to make her fall asleep, patching Kira up would be easier to deal with.

Chester wasn't a professional, but he knew his way around surviving. He figured she slept during the day, so he'd have to show her the attic once they were finished. It would give her a quiet, safe, and warm place to sleep. This forest was big, so those hunters would probably get lost or end up traveling around for days. With another stand he had forgotten a bucket of warm water and a soft rag to wash her wing. Filling it he returned and gave her a nod. "I want to wash your wing, will you let me Kira?" he asked hoping she wouldn't be too afraid still.

So far het fight or flight response had yet to kick in yet. Kira had food and he wasn’t trying to hurt her or chase her. Kira was eating so fast she owns choked on her fruits especially as she tried to stuff grapes in her mouth as if this was her very last meal on this earth. “Medicine? What is medicine?” Kira Asked with a mouthful of grapes. If Chester didn’t slow her down somehow she would get a stomach ache.

By the looks of it she probably had not eaten in a good week or so since she was running from these horrible hunters have been tracking her for so long. Chester’s newfound friend was exhausted tired and dirty. When he mentioned her wing it cost her to tense up and pull back. Kira shook her head no sense the middle of her painful wing scared the living daylights out of her. This kind human may have fed her but I haven’t touched her broken wing that was a whole different level. “No loud magic…I don’t hurt you and you don’t hurt me…Kira okay….Kira can hide please?” It was very hard for her to convey her meeting but all she wanted to do was hide and stay safe in the dark even the Chester wanted to help her she would have to really convinced her that he would not hurt her wing any further than it was.

It seemed like this was going to be harder than it looked. Kira had moved away from the fruit basket. Most of it was gone and it seemed like she had a healthy appetite. That gave him an idea. "Kira is okay, I'm going to get you a special treat." he mused hatching a plan. Looking around his kitchen he eventually found some chocolate. Maybe if he could keep her eating enough to distract her then he could patch up her wing? It was worth a shot anyway. Either way he didn't want her bleeding all over his house. He took the basket and filled it with chocolate candy bars and sweets. He was probably over doing it but he'd help her if she got sick.

Right now all that mattered was helping her recover and trust humans. Maybe even teach her how to speak his language a bit better. Placing the basket with chocolate down near her he sat back on the floor and smiled at Kira. "Here you go, would you like some sweets Kira?" Chester asked politely hoping she would take the bait. Rummaging through the first aid kit he found a needle and some stitching. It would dissolve once her wing would mend. He wasn't a professional but he had mended forest animals before. Occasionally when he was out walking he'd stumble on a few caught in bear traps. He would keep the animal in his house and release it when it was strong enough to survive. Kira wasn't an animal, and he wouldn't treat her so. Once she was healed he would let her leave whenever she could fly again. For now the Human would wait patiently wondering if the chocolate and sweets would work.

There was no way for this mysterious creature to know what Chester meant by special treat. The only thing he knew is that she was very hungry and the contents of the basket were slowly emptying as she ate them all. It was like she hadn’t eaten in a month. she would continue to rummage through the basket to find little balls of grapes eating every last one. Kira was not very happy when he took the basket though she didn’t move and it was probably because it hurt to really move especially with that wing still dripping blood.

Kira’s eyes look like they were starting to flood with tears. “Fruits. Please fruits.” she knew the bare minimum of how to ask for it since he didn’t give her the first basket she didn’t get too angry when he took it just sad and upon his return he could see her face look confused as she sniffed at it. The smell was different from the fruity smell that was in it before. luckily for Chester her curiosity one as she crawled forward again to see what was in the basket.

Sweets with the key that she reached for one of the candy bars and started chewing through the wrapping without thinking open it. Why would she since it wasn’t something she would get. Chester would be treated to a very strange site for chewing through wrapping spitting of the wrapping but eating the chocolate within. Even though she was making quite a bit of a mess she was at least still enough and distracted that he could get to her wing without her scratching or yelling.

The bat creature would start rummaging through the basket sniffing at every little thing but it seemed like she liked the chocolate the most. Once she learned what the scent was she was on a hunt for every little thing chocolate and now Chester had his chance.

It worked! Chester would have to show her how to properly eat one later. For now he inched forward. Gently he used warm water to wash off the blood on her wing. Otherwise, it would harden and crust, he didn't want her to get infected. Her wings felt leathery and soft to the touch. Chester didn't have much time and took the needle. After rubbing the wound with a bit of medicine, he began to slowly and carefully stitch it back together. He had filled the basket with a lot of chocolate and sweets so she'd probably not feel good but it was the only way.

Slowly and carefully the tears on her wing inched closer. Until it was as tight as he could get it. Wrapping it with a gauze bandage, not too tight but tight enough it wouldn't fall off. He began to explore the other parts of her wing and cleaned them up too. The bucket of water now filled with blood he let out a sigh of relief. By the time Kira would finish her chocolate her wing would be all bandaged up. Standing he began to clean up the supplies leaving her to do whatever. The room she was in was dark, so she could explore or sleep hopefully outside of the cupboard.

The door was locked and she was safe for now. No other hunters would bother them and hopefully hunting season would be ending soon. Kira would have to stay with him, but he didn't mind. Chester was pretty lonely and still new to the town so he didn't have many friends or people to talk to. Maybe having her around would be fun? This was his first time meeting a woman with bat wings and ears. He'd make sure she had a proper room to stay in with a soft bed she could sleep on if she wanted. Did she sleep upside down like a normal bat? That would be pretty interesting to see.

Her attention was fully focused on the candy bar and I gave him the chance to wash off the new blood in the dry blood that was starting to form on her soft but slightly leathery feeling wing. She was making it such a huge mess leaving bits and pieces of candy bar wrapper all over at her hands are covered in chocolate. Every so often she would wince as he cleaned it. Kira was more focused on the chocolate and suites right in front of her then the fact that he was touching her very sensitive wing and mending it.

The dark really helped and kept her calm which is very good for Chester. He was able to clean off any scratches she had on her back and arms without much trouble with her basket full of chocolate. He might regret that decision later but for now she was exhausted and now stuffed with both fruits and chocolate she could lay down once she was wrapped up. For the time being she curled up on the floor in a cute little bowl watching out for a bandage wing as she hugged the basket that still hurts quite a bit of chocolate in it that she couldn’t finish and he could see her slowly drifting off to sleep. Kira Felt safe enough to sleep with Chester right there and that was a good side for him meeting she probably would not attack and when she woke up.

He was glad he could patch her up. Watching her lay there a moment, he went to another cupboard and pulled out a spare blanket. Placing it upon her, careful of her healing wing, he smiled at her and turned off the lights of the kitchen. "Good night.... Kira..." he softly spoke to her then using his hands against the walls he guided himself down the hall into his own room. Collapsing onto the bed he fell asleep himself. It had been a long day of surprises.

In the early morning hours, right before the sun would rise into the sky, a noise woke him up. Sounding as if something was stomping around his mind immediately went to Kira. What if the hunters had come back and broke in? No, the doors were locked, and the windows were sealed and blinded. They wouldn't know she was in his house. Still another bump caused him to panic a little. Getting up he made his way towards the sound fumbling a little in the dark, hoping that she was alright.

Kira needed to not be disturbed, she needed to heal. Hopefully he was just overreacting. Chester didn't know why but he felt protective of her all of a sudden. If there was an intruder he would fight them off the best he could to protect her. "Kira!? Kira are you safe!?" he called out to her when he entered the living room. Chester wasn't sure if she was still asleep but he hoped she could hear his voice.

His newfound houseguest slept soundly on the floor bandaged up. In the dark and warm with a full belly she felt safe. She didn’t hear him go up to his room.

Kira did not sleep for long. She woke up and finished eating the chocolate in the basket but she was still hungry. The darkness didn’t stop her and she sniffed around the house, but didn’t realize how loud she was walking around and stomping around. After looking, she managed to find herself in the kitchen, where she would make so much noise, and did not even realize she’d wake Chester up.

For the time being, she ignored Chester when he called out to her as he could hear, rumbling at the opening of his refrigerator, as well as the clanging of cans. She did not know how to turn on any lights with the light from his refrigerator, was illuminating her face and she was eatingShe did not know how to turn on any lights with the light from his refrigerator was illuminating her face, and she was eating something sweet she discovered in the fridge. Sitting on the floor, munching and happily flicking her an injured wing making a windlike sound. He’d find a very happy bat like creature with a very healthy appetite, not only eating some cake, but also more fruits and even some vegetables tossed in. He would probably have to come out to her to get her attention, so she would not freak out. At least it was not an intruder from the outside only within.

As he hurried through his house, he noticed Kira wasn't sleeping in her spot. Fear took him over, as he began to check the rooms for any open windows or anything. Chester should have slept out there with her, oh what if she was murdered or worse? Here he had promised to protect her and even patched her wing up with the help of a chocolate distraction. Taking a moment to ease his worries he took a deep breath and tried to relax. There was no way any hunters would know she existed here. He needed to buy a flashlight; it was annoying trying to see in the dark. There was a faint light coming from the kitchen and with curiosity he gently opened the door.

Chester stood there in shock, watching as Kira sat before his fridge. All around her empty cartons sat this petite bat woman had an appetite. That wasn't a good thing, it meant he would have to buy more food. He doubted she would want to cut back but he had to do something before she became a pudgy bat girl. Feeling around the room he found the light switch and flipped it. Kira's world would get brighter as the kitchen lit up. If that didn't get her attention than he wasn't sure what would. "Kira, what are you doing?" Chester asked obviously knowing she was feeding her face with his leftovers. Adding a bit of a serious tone to his casual voice he tried to look annoyed. It was a bit hard given the fact of how cute she looked. How happy she seemed. How messy she was.

His kitchen was a mess, open cabinets, empty boxes and cans. Did she eat everything? Hopefully not. Kira wasn't getting out of this caper that easily. She would be forced to help him clean. At least she hadn't been nabbed by hunters, so that means all of his bluffing had worked!

Kira didn’t much care for milk but she did snack on some cheese and she like that which meant it was mostly gone. It was like his new pet was sampling everything he had. He would probably have to go shopping but at least it wasn’t all empty. When he turned on the light he startled her and she jumped up and hid under the table especially when the sudden sun scared the living daylights out of her.

“NO!” The injured bat creature yelled at him since he thought it was light of a hunter that suddenly shown on her. He could hear his lightly as a warning but it took her a moment to recognize his voice. Even so she did not come out from under the table and she held onto cheese for comfort. Kira didn’t mean to be messy as she hid leaving the refrigerator open especially since she had no idea how to use one she has figured this box held lots of food and maybe it was like a strange glacier in his house.

It wasn’t hard to sense the fear in her as she trembled and her foot against the table made the table shake. Having such a bright light meant she was in danger and meant it must’ve been daylight. Daylight was dangerous for her kind because she could easily be spotted and at night she could hide. Being mostly nocturnal helped her stay safe but on occasion she did venture out the day but usually not in the mornings. For the time being she stayed hidden under the table not sure how to answer Chester but more afraid of the light that filled the room.

It would take some time getting used to her living with him. He jumped a little as she screamed feeling a bit guilty watching Kira scramble under the table. He could see the table shaking, from that moment on he would make sure he was with her. First, he needed to put some of the food away. Closing the refrigerator Chester left the light on as he picked up and put away a few of the half-eaten containers. He couldn't stay mad at her and made his way over to the table. Sitting under it as well he noticed how afraid she looked. So he did the one thing he had been wanting to do all along.

Chester pulled Kira into a slow, gentle, warm, safe, hug. Making sure not to hurt her wing, or cared if she scratched him. He held her the best he could. "It's alright...you're safe..." he softly cooed to her trying to calm her down a bit. He stayed underneath the table with her leaving the light on. She would need to get used to this because he couldn't see in the dark. "I'm sorry you were hurt...I'll protect you from now on..." Chester's voice was filled with guilt and concern. Guilt for leaving her to sleep alone. Weather she would like it or not he would make sure she wasn't alone.

That last thing Kira meant to do was terrified Chester she was scared herself. The bright light would definitely take a lot of time to get used to. Not even looking up as he moved around the kitchen cleaning up and putting things away. Frozen in fear she hid under the table and it still shook as her leg touched part of the table making that shake to sounding like a small earthquake.

Her face was hidden as she covered her eyes crossing her arms and hiding her face in there not wanting to look up. Chester could hear that only her with red but she was crying. Sobbing to be precise since he was so terrified. Chester managed to pull her into a hug and he could feel her entire body trembling against his and she didn’t scratch him or attack she was too scared to move. It was a testament to how the hunters had treated her and how scared she was of being cornered and caught in a part of her literally just gave up.

Kira said nothing but he could feel her warm tears if you pulled her into a hug and watched out for her wing because if he touched her wing then she might scratch him since it still hurt. He was saying something but she couldn’t really catch it but at least for now she wasn’t running or trying to get away. There were no loud noises even though the bright magic was still on she could feel no pain from knives or anything the hunters will try to use on her. “Light bad. light bad bad men come with light!” in her panic state she managed to say but Chester would probably understand that with light came hunters and that probably meant with flashlights and she couldn’t differentiate it especially in her state of panic and injury.

He frowned; the Hunters really did a number on her. Turning on the light scared Kira, it seemed. There was a lot of recovering inside and out. He let her go and climbed from the table shutting the lights off. Baby steps, Chester had to show her that he was safe. Scooting back under the table he returned to her side and sat there. Guilt sank in his chest, it would be a while before he'd turn a light on around her.

There would be a few more hours until sunrise. He would need to show her the attic soon. Up there it was dark and she could sleep in peace. Chester figured she was nocturnal anyway. Trying it again he hugged her, avoiding her healing wing, letting Kira bury her face in his chest if she needed to. Right now he would remain silent, words weren't going to get through to her.

Kira was a mess. Hunters during this season were brutal and Kira was more scared of light than usual. Sobbing into his chest but when he went to go and turn off the light she cling to him not wanting to let him go. He was safely and kept the bad men away.

He couldn’t just leave her and even when he wasn’t gone for long he heard her cry even harder. When Chester returned he felt his new charge latch o to him with claws and all. He wasn’t going anywhere once he was back in her terrified embrace. “you…you don’t go. Stay. Bad men don’t come with you here. Stay…stay…” begging softly she didn’t realize she was letting her long nails grow digging into him as she insured one way or another that he’d stay with her.

He winced but soldiered the pain. Hugging her he allowed her to cry into his chest. Chester would stay with her until she fell asleep. Gently rubbing her back, avoiding her wings, he tried to calm her down. Closing his eyes he gently kissed the top of her head. "It's alright. I'm going to stay." he softly spoke hoping he could ease her trembling. Poor woman seemed to be a mess, he had never seen anyone be this upset. It broke his heart.

There had to be something he could do to protect her, to keep the Hunters away from her. Chester wanted to help her because this was wrong. He could feel her shaking body, sense the pain she was in, feel her claws cling to him. In the darkness, in the kitchen he held onto her the best he could letting everything she had experienced out. "Let it out...It's going to be alright." he encouraged hoping that some of his words would reach her heart.

The wince did not go unnoticed as Kira let up though still clung to him as he held her. He was helping more than he realized. Crying out her fear, sorrow and loneliness. Now she wasn’t alone in the world. “They always come back…always….no leave Kira alone…outside scary..” he finally got a bit of backstory but not much. These hunters had been after Kira since she left her family nest and she was just so tired of having to find a new home year after year.

Chester’s kind words did comfort her especially with him not leaving her or kicking her out. “I don’t hurt humans…why do humans hurt me?” That was a question she had to ask as her claws dug into him again but not to hurt only to keep him close. She wondered if he had the answers and could tell her why. For now she at least had him and felt safe for the first time in a very long time. “d…don’t leave me…”Kira begged softly hoping for now he’d let her stay until she could fly to a more secluded cave.
