It had been a long day, Niara had been up since 5 that morning. She procrastinated on getting her luggage together so she had to get up extra early to make sure she’d had everything she needed when they left the house at 7 for their vacation. And once they left the house, they had been on the go ever since, they had to make sure they made their flight, which was an agonizingly boring 6 hour flight. Then once they touched down they had to literally run to make sure they would make the shuttle which would take them to their cruise ship, then make sure they got onto the boat. After the flight that was the longest part, they ended up waiting in line with a few of her aunts and older cousins. She stayed to herself as the adults talked. It was over an hour before they finally made it onto the boat.
She and her parents went to find their room and dropped off their luggage. Then after they went to find the cousin's room. It was a nice room much larger than her parents because they’d planned on at least 5-6 kids being in it but for various reasons the list of children that would be attending kept dwindling. The room had 2 queen sized beds, and a few travel beds pushed off to the side. Also it had a large bathroom which had a hot tub like bath and a shower. A small TV as well which could be watched while relaxing in the tub. “You get a nicer room than any of us do.” Her mom joked as she stood in the doorway.
Nia dropped her bags off in the room, leaving them against the wall as she wasn’t sure how many others were in the room and she hadn’t wanted to take up any space in case it was more than 1 other cousin. She honestly didn’t like the idea of having to share a room. She hadn’t seen most of her cousins in at least 2 years. Some even longer than that. After leaving her luggage and making sure she had the key card she put it in her pocket as she walked back up to the top deck with her mother to find the rest of the family who were relaxing and enjoying the food while they waited to set sail.
She wore a pair of faded black shorts, and off the shoulder cropped white tee and a thin dark blue hoodie over it. She looked over the edge at the water below, looking back to the cluster that was her family she still hadn’t really seen anyone looking her age. She decided to have some food as the adults chatted and everyone waited for the boat to head out. She was snacking on a piece of cheesecake. She glanced up as the boat lurched to life, slowly moving away from the dock. She looked around her eye catching with a guy, oddly enough one she’d seen around school but knew full well he never acknowledged her. She sighed, throwing her plate away. She found her mother and told her she was going to explore a bit since she had no one to hang around. She spent the rest of the day doing whatever activity was required of her or sitting on a chair looking over the water.
It was nighttime when she returned to the room. It was empty for the moment making her way inside she sighed, falling to its firm surface. “This is going to suck.” She said to herself muffled by the bed, after a minute she pulled herself up sitting on the bed boredly taking her phone from the pocket, not surprised when her signal was crappy. Signing onto their wi-fi she dropped her phone looking out the glass door that led to the outside seeing the sun setting.
