After dealing with life requirements and commitments over the last couple of months, I’m back and looking to write for a specific plot I’ve been sitting on for a long time. I don’t mind the medium for this one so much, either thread or PM is fine, with 1-3 paragraphs average post lengths, where appropriate.

The opener;

It is the year 2434. Humanity has achieved the capability of interstellar travel following the discovery of an network of ancient gateways, forming paths to distant stars. This discovery led to a race by the leading powers within the Sol system to send ships through the gates to stake their claims, ushering on the rapid expansion of the human race under the shadow of the ominous question of the gates themselves, who constructed them, and what had happened to them.

On Earth, mass urbanization and population growth has led to the formation of several global organizations, all with a shared mission; the expatriation of earthborn humans to established and prospective colonial worlds on the other side of the gates. The most well known of these organizations became the Bureau of Relocation, which developed the primary model of selecting candidates. Names were taken from local and regional census and drawn from a lottery based on predetermined factors. For the most part, the system favored selecting individuals based on their commitments; families were largely exempt from selection, though cases of individual members being selected and being denied an appeal weren’t unheard of. The preference was for single, legally uncommitted persons, typically from the most densely populated areas. The options after being selected were few; file an appeal within 24 hours to express why you cannot be relocated, report to a relocation office willingly for assignment to a departing ship, or be escorted to an office by law enforcement should you fail to report. The latter generally carried the consequence of being sent to a less desirable destination than others.
