Question Notifications for followed's profile posts

I recently started following my RP partners with the assumption I'd receive notifications when they post something on their profile (in case they'll be inactive for a while, or share music or whatever), but I just realised that I haven't received any alerts despite some of them posting stuff. Is there a setting I need to change in order to enable this, or isn't this a feature? If not, what exactly does following someone do?
