I have fallen in love with medieval themes all over again thanks to research into the historical city of Constantinople for a novel, playing A Plague Tale Requiem, playing Medieval Dynasty, and the like. And I think I have the perfect idea...
We can set it during the real Black Death at any time from 1347. The time when everybody really had to stay in their homes. Or die. Everybody thought it was the rats, but the rats never actually bit people. Those were the fleas that hitched a ride and hatched from plague ridden corpses in Russia lobbed by the Mongols, after which the stench drifted down to Constantinople, crippling the already wheezing Byzantine Empire, and plague rats made their way onto ships to Sicily, Italy, southern France, and from there...pretty much everywhere except for like Poland.

We could set it anywhere in Europe you so desire as we are completely restricted to indoor living, with a month's provisions. Perhaps I am an Irish girl who takes to the sea for food with her Portuguese sailor husband while they are isolated from everyone else in Portugal. Perhaps you are a crusader who gets locked in the small mud hut of a peasant woman, a widow already at 19. Perhaps, my fave idea right now, you are a Varangian guard in Constantinople as it's first hit...but there's a twist that isn't in real history that may just save the Empire and create a more multipolar future than the one we got.

God, he's so handsome. Please let him be mine, whether he serveth you or not. the 19-year-old, palace trained and worldly wise but still quite innocent girl would think. That would be the beginning of becoming quite taken with the guard that has been dispatched to escort her to an Imperial palace in Thrace where she'll be safe. And after so many nights alone in the woods together in various states of undress while bathing in lakes that the guard knows by memory, the conversation finally turns to sex, and they unknowingly conceive that night.

So it could be that by the time the Black Death catches up with Thrace after overwhelming Constantinople, we now have a palace full of food, but will it be enough for the three of us and all the palace servants. Who are all freedmen at Anna's insistence.
