Ranulf MacCloud sat in the corner of the dining room of a local all night diner as he did most nights. He did not like to take his work home, there was no one there and it just felt sad in a way. So he came here most nights, ate a late dinner, had a few sodas, a couple desserts and studied the case files he had been assigned. This case was very troubling. Local girls age 18-25 were disappearing and it was believed they were being kidnapped for a slave trade ring. Young American girls were in high demand in the middle east, where men enjoyed breaking their spirit. A sort of placebo because the United States could not be defeated by them. What better way to hurt America than to enslave its young daughters! Ranulf was going over a case file that was newer that night. He noticed the waitress was new and very attentive? She was pretty so he enjoyed the company when she would come over. Ranulf would always keep names and pictures covered when anyone passed by. This waitress though was quick and showed up impromptu several times.
Ranulf never thought much about it at the time. He left her a larger than normal tip for trying so hard. He was still thinking about the case as he left the restaurant. Shelly Ginnis, age 25, pretty, athletic, with a college diploma and had less than a year at a job with a future. She was stable, had good credit and no steady boyfriend. She was a career professional type person. Putting her personal life on hold till she reached her goals. Her car had been found outside a night club only a few days ago. No blood, one rather expensive shoe, her planner, cell phone, and wallet all on the ground outside the car. They had been gone through by the time the police had checked the opened door car. That had delayed the reports and now he had to deal with an ice cold case with no leads. Other than no one thought Shelly was dead!
Ranulf walked to his car without dear. Not because this was a safe neighborhood so much as he was confident he could deal with whatever life threw at him. He had studied martial arts practically his entire life. He had spent six years as a Marine Corp Scout/Sniper, four of those years in hostile areas. Now he was with the FBI. He ran every morning, worked out once or even twice a day and used a local indoor pool three or more times a week. being 6'3" and a solid as hell 200 pounds just was icing on the cake. Few people messed with him. For all his hard work, mostly polite and courteous manner, he had never had a relationship last more than a few months. Never having spent a lot of time around women he was a bit shy, to the point of often seeming awkward. He covered it up with a bit of snarky attitude most times. Which did not help him catch a lady. He loved animals and often spoke to them as if they were people. He had a sort of affinity for most. Some saw it as cute, others as a bit creepy.
As Ranulf got in his car he thought again how it was a bit sad, he was not bad looking, he worked hard, he was honest and not poor. yet he was nearing 31 and was going home to an empty house.
