Here are some small prompts and ideas, separated into themes and settings and accrued from friends, inspiration boards, and the back of my brain. All of these are flexible and easy to change, so I’d love to hear any ideas that come to mind!
I’m more than capable of writing multiple side-characters for each.
ALT-HISTORY.
Ridiculous, alt-history timelines are a favourite of mine, particularly when taking inspiration from the early-to-mid 1900s.
1. A Hellsing-inspired rodeo where the allies are faced with an onslaught of military-trained vampires and their ghouls.
2. Politicians, spies and assassinations within a Nazi-occupied America or Britain. A foreign informant falls under the watch of the rebel resistance, or is intercepted on the way.
3. The last-surviving Rusviet royal is worth her weight in gold, and stuck in hiding. Under the care of Russia’s vagrant monarchists, they would aim to see her reinstated as Tsarina, no matter her protests.
FANTASY.
The classic failsafe of creativity, and an all-time favourite of mine. All flavours of fantasy are accepted, be it low or high-magic.
1. The monarchy of Lucaria is butchered during the climax of a civil uprising. The sole-surviving duchess, who had escaped through almost miraculous means, is sheltered safely within a neighbouring allied kingdom. Though Lucarian stability is somewhat regained through careful stewardship, it's manaflow relies on its royal blood and the throne now sits dangerously empty. The traumatised duchess is implored to claim it in the coming days – and she has attracted the gaze of ambitious nobles who would very much like the lands of Lucaria for themselves.
2. A fledgling, fresh-faced adventurer joins a guild, and is invited to accompany a dungeon veteran on their chosen quests.
FEUDAL JAPAN.
I truly, utterly love the concepts and mythology behind Oni, and the visuals that accompany them. From the bestial, hulking and horned variety, to the cunning and beautiful Yokai hidden behind theatre masks.
1. An oni warlord claims a forested region as their own, and is faced by the feminine, protective fox spirit which resides there.
2. An encounter with a lesser Yokai afflicts a shrinemaiden with the curse of true sight, and renders her able to both see and interact with creatures from the spirit world. This, in turn, makes her increasingly vulnerable to their appetites as her awareness grows. A powerful oni, equally enticed by the potency of her soul, offers her an accord. In exchange for small, nightly doses of her spiritual energy, he would act as the shrine’s protector and ward off his kin. It begins with a single strand of hair, a drop of blood… and ultimately her body.
3. The blood moon rises and breaks the veil between the mortal and spiritual worlds. A young woman takes up her late father’s sword, and under the guise of a male, leaves her home to face the demonic threat that has spilled across the land. Mulan, but spookier.
4. An oni-led shogunate has a human geisha spy pressed under their influence. A demon-hunting ronin visits the comfort house within which she works, and knowingly finds him/herself as the target of her cunning.
FUTUREPUNK.
I’m a freak for cyborgs, full-blown robots, and technocratic drug-lords. I’m always down for cyberpunk vibes, neo-cities, and outerspace rallies.
1. A federal scientist with a specialty in human augmentation and robotics has her designs stolen by a crime syndicate. They twist them in seemingly impossible ways, and she is one day met by a monster of her own making.
2. Cyberpunk street racing. I’m not sure what I want from this, but I definitely want something.
3. The daughter of a neo-Yakuza boss is missing. Estranged and determined to make her own way through the underworld, her ignorance and notoriety catch up to her in the worst way possible.
