Semester had only recently resumed at the Tampa campus of Florida State University. The Spring Break ended a couple of weeks back, which meant that students were milling around again as they went about their daily routines of coffee for breakfast, morning lectures and classes, coffee for lunch, afternoon lectures and classes, then off for the day while the night-class students rolled in. It was warm enough, but not stiflingly so, although the humidity, while not bad by any means, could get annoying even if you were used to it.

The campus was large enough, although it was by no means the largest campus in the state. Still, it covered several square kilometers of land, and had its own road network snaking between the couple of dozen buildings on campus that held the admin rooms, lecture halls, classrooms, dorm rooms, libraries, and various food and drink outlets on the site. At any given time, now that semester was running, there could be several thousand staff and students on site, excluding those in the dorm areas. There were also several sporting grounds and facilities on site, mainly for basketball, football, baseball, and track and field.

Ostensibly, Myles O'Connor was one of those students. He was a second-year Science student, majoring in Astronomy, and had possibly-lofty dreams of getting a job at NASA one day. He'd grown up loving the work of the Hubble Space Telescope, and wanted to get in on that team…never mind the new James Webb Space Telescope. He knew he'd have to work at it, though; they weren't going to just let him waltz in and take whatever job he wanted. No, he'd have to put in the hard yards first. That was the trouble – the hard yards were Hard. Not so much academically, although he did sometimes find himself burning the midnight oil to get through classes, but more financially. Having your own telescope (there were telescopes, and then there were telescopes, and he wanted the latter) and astrophotography gear wasn't cheap. That's why he was taking his Gap Year to try and build up some savings to get the gear he wanted.

At least he'd managed to find a job on-campus. He was working as a Barista at The Bean Café – whoever had named it that really needed to visit the campus Shrink, he thought – on the campus premises, located around the Law building and its nearby library. It was a decently-sized café, with a half-dozen booths that seated four along the far wall, and ten or so moderately-sized tables on the main floor. It had a small kitchen out the back for cooking quick and simple meals – sure as hell it wasn't restaurant-grade stuff – as well as the expected fare of cakes and salads and sandwiches and the like that could be served up readily. Then there was himself and his colleague, Tony, along with a couple of girls (Cassidy and Nicole) at the main counter and register, and Greg in the back (the owner and cook).

Myles wasn't bad-looking, although he'd never agree to the suggestion that he might be. He was just on six feet tall, possessed a wiry and toned build, a mop of dark sandy hair on his head that he kept well-groomed, pale blue-grey eyes, fair complexion, and pleasant-enough features built into a narrow face. He wasn't buff or muscular, but he had muscles. He was generally thought of as an "okay" guy by those who knew him…but getting to know him was hard. He wasn't an introvert, but he wasn't great at making friends; making friends had just never been his strength. People were hard work at times.

Tony, though, was far more outgoing than Myles, although possibly not as good looking. He was a few years older than Myles, had short dark red hair and a pale complexion. He'd somehow gotten through Myles' shell not long after the student has joined the team, and generally looked out for the younger man…although he also wasn't averse to giving Myles a gentle ribbing on occasion. Occasions like now, on this otherwise-nondescript Thursday afternoon.

"So…are you ever going to ask her out, Myles?" Tony wanted to know, his voice lowered as the pair worked the coffee machines at the counter. No-one in the café needed to know what they were talking about. The café was technically in its wind-down stage for the day, although that wind-down stage was often held-up by the students wanting a pick-me-up between classes and home – and today was no exception.

"N-no," Myles denied flatly, although there was a hint of longing in his voice as he said it. "I mean…she's young, gorgeous, smart, got so much going for her, and I'm just…well, me." He gave the steamer a twist to heat up the milk in the pot he was holding.

"Pfft…you've never spoken with her beyond calling out her name occasionally to hand her her order, so how would you know any of that about her?" the redhead queried slyly. He knew damned well that Myles was talking himself out of any shot, but there was only so much he could do to talk his friend through.

"I j-just know," Myles replied defensively. He knew Tony was right, but he couldn't bring himself to admit it.

"Writing messages on her cup is fine and all, but when are you actually going to ask her? What have you got to lose by asking?"

"My dignity," Myles mumbled as he turned the steam off and started to pour. A few moments later he was done pouring, gave the contents a quick stir, poured a bit more, let the froth settle. "Could we stop talking about her, please? Vanessa'll be here in a few minutes." He popped a lid on the cup and looked up. "Chai Soy Latte for Amy?" he called out, and handed the cup to a short Asian-American girl who stepped forward to claim it.

"You'll regret it, you know," Tony countered quietly, but let it drop for the moment. There were more orders to fill, anyway.

"Maybe," Myles admitted softly to himself as he put a cup aside for her. He knew what drink she wanted, every bit of it. He'd written several messages on her cups lately, and if the messages had bothered her, she'd never said anything…and she kept coming back, which he supposed was good. Previous messages had included:
Hi!
Good Afternoon!
Enjoy! :)
Extra Frothy!
Hope it's a good book!
Quality reading enhancer inside! :)

Today's message would be:

Your smile makes me smile! :)

With any luck…she'd smile. That'd be as close as he'd get, he figured.

This was going to be her semester.

She sort of slacked off last semester for a variety of reasons but not this semester. Nothing was going to get in her way nor will she be distracted by anyone either. Vanessa sighed softly after she had brought her last luggage bag up to her dormitory and sat it down on her bed. Her eyes skimmed her room with a raised brow because she had no idea where to start when it came to decorating her room for this semester. She placed her hands on her hips, tapping her finger along her waist before starting to unpack her luggage and place her belongings in the dressers and closet that were present. Luckily for her, her roommate had a morning class and Vanessa didn't have any classes today at all.

This was her time to have some peace and quiet and alone time to catch up on some assignments before her next class, which was tomorrow. Although she was alone, Vanessa usually went down to the coffee shop that was on campus but only for their excellent WiFi and she had a nice table picked out in the back where she wouldn't really be bothered. With the thought pondering in her mind, she hung up her last clothing accessory before closing the double doors of her closet, finally satisfied. Her hands retrieved her cell phone from her nightstand and her Chromebook before she left her dorm room and made a trek toward the coffee shop.

Vanessa descended three flights of stairs before she exited the building and took a turn so that she can stay on the sidewalk, which was an easier route. Her mind drifted away from reality for a second as the campus was filled with excitement and nerves. She honestly loved it when the campus came alive after certain breaks and life was breathed back into it. Her eyes scanned the perimeter as she tried to see if anything was new but unfortunately, it was the same. After all, they were only gone for two weeks for Spring Break, so not much would've changed during that timeframe.

She stood at a crosswalk, eyes looking both ways to make no sure no cars were incoming before she crossed the street, and eventually, she ended up on the other side. Vanessa couldn't wait until her lips were wrapped around that straw and taking sip by sip from her desired beverage. She always wanted to change her drink order but feels bad to do so considering that the cashier already knows what she's going to order before she even reaches the counter.

Her trek finally ended at the door of the coffee shop, where she opened it and saw that her table was open and available. Vanessa quickly scurried over there to place her belongings down to secure her position there before going up to the counter her favorite girls were present.

❝Hello there, Nicole and Cassidy,❞ she greeted and offered them both a smile before she caught sight of Nicole already ringing her order in. Vanessa stuck her card into the chip reader and waited for it to ding before taking it out. She rummaged inside her pocket to find a ten-dollar bill there and dropped it inside the tip jar that was perfectly placed between the two girls. From there, she went to stand off to the side and wait for her beverage to be prepared. Her mind was also wondering on what sort of message was going to be on her cup today since there's usually one on there, seemingly designed specifically for her. They were a little awkward and weird at first but she quickly got used to them.

When her ears twitched at the calling of her name, she moved her feet forward to go up to the counter where she retrieved her frappe along with a straw and walked over to her seat. She scanned over her cup to see the message, which made her smile and flutter her eyes up to the counter to show it off. Vanessa continued to stare at the duo of guys to see if one or both of them were going to smile along with her.

"She's here!"

The thought ran through Myles' head about ten microseconds after he saw her step through the door to the café. It was a stupid, childish thought, but it was through his head before his brain had completed registering her arrival, never mind the small joyous jump his heart did in his chest when his eyes spotted her. Completely ridiculous overreaction for a customer who probably wouldn't give him the time of day. He returned to the equipment in front of him, his eyes focussing on the orders to be filled, his awareness now very attuned to Vanessa's presence.

"Pay attention, will you?"

Tony's whisper cut through his daydream sharply. "Huh? Oh, shit!" he hissed quietly, turning the knob quickly and managing to avoid burning the milk in the pot he was holding. "Right, sorry."

Myles looked at the rail, saw Vanessa's order go up. Three ahead of her. Don't rush things, be smooth, be calm, give everyone else good service too. She's having her usual – Choc-chip Mocha Frappe, extra whipped cream, chocolate drizzled on top. Every time. PAY ATTENTION, IDIOT!

He almost didn't give her the prepared cup, but he did. Made her drink just how she liked it, handed it to her with some lame-ass comment like "have a good day", and she was gone. He watched her walk to her corner table, and a line from that old David Essex song paraphrased itself in his head:

I'm lookin' at my blue jean Baby Queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen…

She looked at the cup. Was she expecting the messages, now? Yes! She read it, smiled…

Tony smiled with a gentle shake of his head, but he wasn't looking in Vanessa's direction. He was more looking at Myles' reaction. Another cup, another message…and this one had had the intended effect, he supposed. Tony had no idea what the message was, but she didn't seem in the least bit put out by it. Rather, she was looking their way, smiling…and Myles was…

Myles was standing there, looking back at her as she smiled, and he just knew there was a stupid, goofy smile on his own face as their eyes met for just the briefest moment…and he knew she knew. He felt his cheeks burn suddenly, and he snapped his head down to look at the next order. Large Hot White Chocolate, two sugars, regular milk. Easy enough. He got to work, trying hard to get his deep flush under control.

"Do you think she noticed?" he muttered to Tony.

Tony chuckled softly. "If she didn't, she's the most gifted blind person I've ever seen," the other man noted. "Now you've got to ask her out. If you don't…maybe I will." He wouldn't, but if it got Myles moving…

"Like I said before: what have you got to lose?" he added quietly.

"Come on, you two!" Nicole hissed from the register. "Get it together! Those drinks aren't gonna make themselves!"

That helped, at least a little. Myles nodded. "Yeah, sure," he replied quickly. "Sorry." He put his head down and got back to it. With any luck Vanessa wouldn't hurl an insult or barb at him.
