As soon as she walked off the bus in Cherrygrove City, Maddie Fairspring was instantly in awe of her surroundings. Being the daughter of world famous artist and designer Scarlet Fairspring had a heavy influence on her, but in the complete opposite way. Where people would think her poised, elegant, and distinguished like her mother, Maddie was wild, unruly, and for lack of a better word, uncontrollable. Maybe it was for the best that when she got her trainers license, she left her home in Jubilife City and decided to travel the world.

It took a lot of her personal savings, a long boat ride, and bus across a long bridge to make it Johto. Which is exactly what she wanted. She wanted to be as far from the influence of her mother as she possibly could. But she knew that could never happen. She would be surprised if she met someone who didn’t know her mother.

She touched the pokeball on her side and smiled. “We made it Willowby. It was a long trip, but we made it.” She walked around, looking at the new sights she had never seen before. Everywhere she looked, she saw friendly faces. She pulled out a map and looked at it.

She heard about a professor in Newbark town who was looking for some trainers to help him with some sort of research. It could have been just talk on the boat, but it would be something to do. “Let’s see….if this is there….and that’s there….then Newbark has to be…..this way.”

She put the map away and she began to walk out of the city. It would probably be a while before she reached Newbark, but she decided to make the best of it.

Cherrygrove City was a small coastal city in the Johto Region of the world. More of town than a city, it is one of the main starter towns in the known world. Cherrygrove was known for being the home of one of the greatest Pokémon trainers the world had ever seen, Gold. Years ago, Gold had set out on his journey to be a Pokémon master as he quested to collect gym badges from his region as well as the sister region, Kanto. Johto had so much hidden treasures to show new and even existing Pokémon trainer. Treasures that Maddie was bound to find on her journey.

The day was a wonderful sunny and bright day that had a great breeze that created a distinct aroma that only a coastal city could have. Flower pedals danced on the wind as they adding an element of beauty as well as a delicious fragrance to the air. The day had a wonderful heat to it, with only enough moisture in the air to keep it from being a completely dry heat. Citizens seemed to be walking about as they rushed to the edge of the town to enjoy the water in swimsuits and summer attire. With nothing much going on in the town, it was easy to spot the only attraction that drew in customers that had other interests than swimming...eating!

At the edge of the town, there was a simple food cart that had attracted a crowd. Even the smells seem to compete as they overpower the coastal atmosphere the closer you got to the source. Meats and veggies sizzled as they were fried up to and served giving a melody to the area that drew attention. Burgers were being prepared in a variety of ways as customers left the food vendor smiling and eager to eat. Nearby, there was a small station of seats that allowed people to sit and enjoy their meal. Burgers, Burgers & Burgers, was the name of the small stand, which was hard to see as it was only written once on a black board that sat on the outside of the vendor stand. The black board only stood about four feet tall and had the name and a series of burger styles that could be prepared at the customers desires. Surrounded by eager customers, the board rarely showed much of its writing to anyone that was not close to its proximity. Either these people had a personal investment in this burger stand, or it was bound to have some delicious food.

The vendor was a large man, overweight and with a tanned complexion from all the time spent outside with his job. Standing about five inches short of six feet, the man looked enthusiastic about his profession like only an investor or owner could be. Black hair and black eyes that seemed to sit amongst his average features as they added a bit of color to his complexion. Round spectacles and an apron that had the logo embroidered upon it, were the only accessories that this man wore proudly. He wanted this food cart to do well and even seemed to enjoy the various aspects that came with operating. He looked like a man who belonged right where he was and enjoyed every minute of his existence.

And by the looks of the customers, they enjoyed him for it!

"Come get the best Burger in Johto!" the man continuously yelled as he served up his food to guests, in between the various greetings and small talk that only paying guests were privileged too enjoy.

Maddie looked over at the vendor and her stomach growled loudly. She was so focused on getting to Newbark that she completely forgot to eat anything. She wouldn’t get far without food. And everything there looked so good.

She stood in line and waited for her turn in line. She stepped up and smiled. “Hi. These all smell so amazing. I’ll take the best burger you got.” She smiled and waited for her food to be ready.

It looked so amazing. It was full of stuff she knew her mother would frown on. She couldn’t wait to eat it. She reached for her bag, opened it up and looked is shock. Getting her must have taken more money than she initially thought. She barely had enough for it. She looked up at the vendor and smiled, trying to look as cute as possible. “Uhh, discount for a first timer?”

"Absolutely! One Double Burger, All the Way!" He stated with enthusiasm, turning to his grill and going about his dance. Like an artist when he knows what to put on a blank canvas, the street vendor simply started going about the preparations needed. First, he grabbed a bun and threw it on his flat grill to toast up, adding a little butter for flavor. Then, he pulled a fresh patty from his supplies and threw it on the grill. He had several patties already cooking but it seemed like he had a system while he had such a line. Replace each burger with a new on as they were ordered. After that, he went about adding cheese to one of the burgers that looked prime and ready. From there it was a matter of adding various ingredients from the pile of grilled onions and veggies that decorated one end of the chef's flat grill. It could be oddly satisfying to watch this man work, as he performed a simple day's work with the skill and grace of a master who loved his dedication.

Putting the masterpiece upon a paper plate, the Chef turned to his fryer and started to add a healthy number of fried potatoes to it. Little salt and seasoning, the man turned to the young lady and presented her with the meal.

"As you requested, one double burger done up all the way! Chef's style!"

It was then that the man was hit with the anchor that was reality. This young lady could not pay. Tempted as the man might be, he knew that today was a day of earnings. His wife would kill him and use him to supply the next weeks' worth of burger meat. But the man was a gentleman first and fought with himself on what to do. While he did this, a few moments passed and anyone could look on and see the gears as they turned inside the man's head. Coming to a conclusion, the man began to speak...

"I..." He started but was interrupted by another gentleman who walked up to the front of the line.

"I will pay for her meal." Spoke the new man as he pulled his wallet out and proceeded to hand the chef payment. "And don't worry about it lady, we all need help once in a while."

The new gentleman finished payment and without a moment's hesitation, turned away from the food cart and started to walk towards route 29. In a hurry, the young gentleman didn't even bother to wave or ask the young woman's name before he rescued her from her bill. A tall man, about six foot or more, he stood over most the citizens that gathered around Burger, Burger & Burger. His hair was a dark shade of black that stood out, even making the burger vendor's hair seem a few degrees lighter. Next to the young man's hair, the vendor almost seemed to have a darker shade of brown hair that would look black if not for the gentleman presence. His eyes were an icy blue that faded to white as they got closer to the pupils. Well-built for his size, the young man seems muscular but without the tone and shape that only came from vigorous days at the gym. Athletically built like that of a track star, the young man was not hard on the eyes with his tanned skin and thick beard. Slightly out of place, despite his looks, the man seemed like he came from a mountainous region that must have spent many months covered in snow. He was dressed in shorts and a tank top, as he glistened with sweat from the warm day. His few belongings consisted of a backpack, hat, finger-less gloves and boots that matched his hair color; his clothing as well as a belt that seemed home to a few Pokéball.

"Good Luck and be sure to pass along the kindness to another!" He spoke with and elevated voice as he continued to make his way away from the crowd and towards New Bark Town.

Maddie looked at this new stranger. He paid for her food. That was very nice of him. She smiled a little. “Thank you.” She took the burger and smelled it again. It was amazing. When she took a bite, it tasted even better. She quickly ate the burger and fries, loving every bite more and more.

With how hungry she was, it didn’t take Maddie long to finish the large creation. She sighed in content from a full belly. She suddenly had a realization. She needed more money. She got lucky right now with a good samaritan paying for her food, even though it wasn’t much.

She looked in the direction the man walked off in. He was heading toward Newbark Town. That was where she needed to go. She quickly threw her trash away and began running after him. “Hey! Hey mister, wait up! Wait up!!” She left Cherrygrove and found herself alone on Route 29. She looked around a bit before lightly cursing herself.

“Damn. It would have been nice to walk with someone.” She pulled out the map and read it again. “Okay. It’s a left here……then a right…..” She followed the map, walking and tripping a few times for a few hours before finally making it to Newbark Town. She smiled as she looked. “This is a pretty nice place. Now, I just gotta find this professor.”
