A Very Bright Encounter

Sunrise hung over the horizon, a beacon of new day releasing a brilliant red over the great metallic city mountains. Sakura flowers fed from the brilliance, moisture in the air, and exhaust fumes, opening their arms to the sky and rejoicing in wonder. Every harlot and politician moved about the world, insignificant dots clinging to the glory of life. And as Lawliet walked he could feel every heart beat and taste every smell, hum to every tune, meandering slumped over as if time neither mattered or beat onwards.

His fascination with Kira, Light Yagami, and matters of death and destruction had begun only months ago. True, he had worked on many other outstanding cases but none so mind bending. To simply wrap his head around the entirety of 'Kira' meant having a very unique perspective. A unique perspective he had, suspects he did not. Which led him to a university test building, early in the morning, dew still clinging to awakening life forms.

When he stepped into the room people noticed. Strange, pale, macabre, there wasn't a person who wouldn't glance at least once and wonder 'what the hell is going on here'. He definitely didn't appear to be academy material. A book could never be judged by it's cover which is exactly what made his new target so familiar.

L took one brief glance at Light during a stride by, taking a seat behind the brown haired boy. He positioned himself in the seat, heels clinging to the edge of the wooden chair. From this position he could examine Light's every movement. If Light had any sort of predatory instinct he would be able to feel L's lifeless eyes burn a hole in the back of his head.

He was hoping that Light would simply turn around and glance, just once. However the teacher interrupted making it impossible to gauge whether or not Light was looking at him, simply because of sensei taking notice, or because he was truly curious. But they did make eye contact, a brief but exhilarating moment of which neither of them inhaled or flinched.

The test was over almost as soon as it had begun, at least for Lawliet anyway. But he didn't stand up to hand the instructor the page. Instead he stared ahead and waited for Light to finish first. Knowing that Raito was incredibly intelligent forced L to take his own precautions. Intentionally he missed a question and most purposefully exited the room behind Light. They would now wait for the rest of the body of human bodies to finish, then take a break so their tests could be graded. Later in the afternoon they would wander into the auditorium while names were announced.

They stood at an impasse. L took a place at the center of the hallway his eyes staring ahead, his shadow just narrowly reaching the suspect. Again they looked at one another but didn't voice their opinions. Maybe it was because Light was the only viable Kira, from this perspective the detective definitely found Light attractive. He was well structured, very straight in posture, and had a chiseled yet angelic face. L had never fancied himself in love with men, but that was only because he could never dwell on the subject of sexual prowess.

When the time came for them to part ways L took it upon himself to follow Light a spell. Lingering across the cobblestones, a creepy stalking emotionless figure. It would seem as though he was following purposefully, stopping now and again when Light stopped, turning corners in a similar fashion. However when they came upon a long stretch of highway a black car with tinted windows pulled up, a door popped open and L climbed into the back seat.

"Goodbye Light Yagami. I do suspect that we shall meet again very soon." His whisper couldn't have been heard above the roar of the engine. In fact he might have been talking to somebody in the vehicle for what anybody could tell. L hadn't given away any information about him actually being himself so as he assumed, Light was not too suspicious.

When the time came for their second coming L took a seat behind Light. He knew full well who the seats up front were meant for. Their names were called above a roar of whispers. Well at the very least they called 'Hideki Ryuga' and Light Yagami up to the front of the room. This go around he did not look directly at Light but instead walked up to the podium, gave a very strange little speech and took his seat.

He waited until the hum of sounds was but a minimal voice congratulating them as Light sat down beside him before turning his head oh so slowly and commenting on their recent situation. "Congratulations" He was quite serious about the entire matter and chose a very bad time to come out of the closet. "Light Yagami? I am L." what was the world coming to when a famous but anonymous detective could sit next to a serial killer completely unharmed. The situation didn't seem too dire to 'Hideki' who was completely at home with his choice of moves. But nevertheless he noticed a very small but ominous bead of sweat forming on the back of Light's neck.

Light kept his gaze forward, it was obvious we was trying his best to remain calm, though after hearing those words, it was easier said then done. He had see this male at the entrance exams. He got in trouble for sitting oddly in his seat, but he never expected him to be the second person giving the address for freshmen representative along side him.

This guy was L? That was a little hard to believe, after all, why would the famous L just admit who he was so recklessly? Unless, this guy had a plan. That had to be it, this guy was messing with him! Coming out in the open and revealing he's L. The only reason he did this was to watch his reactions. Even if he was L or wasn't, Light couldn't do anything to him! How humiliating this was for him, he could only sit and listen to this male say that he is L, while he could do nothing! This was a good move on his part, he was able to defend and attack.

His gaze turned to the side looking directly into a black eyes of the other who just seemed to stare right into him. He then turned his head with a smile. "I see, but why are you telling me this? Do you have some personal business with my father?" He asked. It was best for Light to listen then to speak, for now anyway.

L was almost 6% sure that Light was indeed Kira. He was no further from the truth then he was from being wrong. At this point he was standing a few steps above Light Yagami, giving L the perfect shot downwards. But how long would these games continue? If Light was indeed the real Kira then they certainly were not going to stop. It was fascinating to feel like he had taken a step in the right direction. Fascinating to be so close to somebody who might indeed be Kira. Light Yagami..

"I am glad you asked. I want you to join the task force that is investigating the Kira murders." By asking Light to join the investigation L could keep an eye on him. If Light was Kira he would certainly agree rather quickly. Then again if he was Kira he might also disagree within the next few moments to come. Would Kira jump at the chance to get so close to task force? Light Yagami was quite the intelligent young man, certainly he would think things over, want some kind of proof.

L turned his attention back to the podium. He wasn't listening to the sound of the buffoon who was currently giving the closing speech, rather focusing all of his attention on Raito. When people began to pile out L got up and drifted towards the door, then stopped to wait for Light. "I will be in touch." It was good to not rush things. If L moved to quickly there was room for error. He was a firm believer in taking his sweet time and letting all the chips hit the table.

<Sorry Short. I am being Lazy today.>

Light looked at the man who reviled himself as L, for a long time, or rather he was thinking over what he heard and was just staring off into space. If he joined the task force that would give him a chance to get close to L now. This is what he wanted to come face to face with L and try to find out his real name, but to do that patients was in order. The best option was to possibly gain friendship with his male and find out everything he could. And once he's found out L's real name there will be no reason for keeping him alive anymore, then he'll kill L, with his hands if necessary.

When L looked away toward the front Light did the same. He wasn't going to fully say he wanted to join the task force just yet. First he needed some proof that this guy really was L, otherwise he'd just be wasting his time. All he was going to do at the time was wait, take slow steps, things like this could not be rushed. If they are, there is always the possibility of slipping up, and failure was not an option in his book.

The ceremony finally ended and Light casually stood from his seat. He walked to the door and saw Hideki waiting for him. Light smiled and gave a slight nod but didn't say one word as he saw the male get into a limo and drive away. He stood there with one hand in his pocket, watching until the limo was no longer in sight. Then he parted his ways and headed for home, he had a lot to think about from all that's happened.

(No, that is perfectly fine.)

"What an attractive young man.."

Did you say something L?

"Nothing Watari. Drop me off back at headquarters."

This situation was complicated almost, too complicated. One breath, even the slightest tremble could demolish L's card house. But despite current matters at hand, L's could not help but stop and wonder what measures he should take to get closer to Raito Yagami. And as soon as he began to contemplate Kira, his heart would skip a beat and his thoughts would wander back to Light. L had never been infatuated before. The last time he felt this way about a person he barely knew was back at the whammy house. All these feelings baffled him. Falling for Light Yagami was a big 'No'. He could not have a personal relationship with a suspect. But what about an intimate relationship...

After about three weeks and no new revelations in the Kira investigation L was leaning more and more in Light's direction. At this time and point with no other suspects L had no choice but to focus on Light, which did not bother him one bit. Maybe he was overstepping the line a little, getting too friendly, however there was nobody around to tell him 'No' so, why not? His next move took him to school. Purposefully he had scheduled all his classes to coincide with Light's own class list. Just after their last class L followed Light out the door and caught up with him in a few strides. "Hey Light. Wait up." Although every move made was intended, and analyzed rather closely this particular one was L's simple gesture of friendship. Catching Light at a time like this could be very beneficial to the case, L wasn't meaning to be such an obvious attempt.

"Are you going to be doing anything important in the next three hours?" L kept up with Light's pace ignoring glances from curious onlookers. This was the first real attempt at friendship L had ever made. His life was devoted to bringing down the great hand of justice. "I want to speak to you, that is if you aren't busy. Ice Cream? My treat. " The words had slipped even before he had time to digest approaching Light so forwardly. Oh well. On this bright and beautiful day he might just be making small talk for what any passerby could tell. L did half expect Light to refuse. He could always skate by using the 'I have a lot of homework' excuse which was perfectly reasonable. Nobody liked to be suspected of murder, no normal person anyway. Light was far from normal.
