Sunrise hung over the horizon, a beacon of new day releasing a brilliant red over the great metallic city mountains. Sakura flowers fed from the brilliance, moisture in the air, and exhaust fumes, opening their arms to the sky and rejoicing in wonder. Every harlot and politician moved about the world, insignificant dots clinging to the glory of life. And as Lawliet walked he could feel every heart beat and taste every smell, hum to every tune, meandering slumped over as if time neither mattered or beat onwards.
His fascination with Kira, Light Yagami, and matters of death and destruction had begun only months ago. True, he had worked on many other outstanding cases but none so mind bending. To simply wrap his head around the entirety of 'Kira' meant having a very unique perspective. A unique perspective he had, suspects he did not. Which led him to a university test building, early in the morning, dew still clinging to awakening life forms.
When he stepped into the room people noticed. Strange, pale, macabre, there wasn't a person who wouldn't glance at least once and wonder 'what the hell is going on here'. He definitely didn't appear to be academy material. A book could never be judged by it's cover which is exactly what made his new target so familiar.
L took one brief glance at Light during a stride by, taking a seat behind the brown haired boy. He positioned himself in the seat, heels clinging to the edge of the wooden chair. From this position he could examine Light's every movement. If Light had any sort of predatory instinct he would be able to feel L's lifeless eyes burn a hole in the back of his head.
He was hoping that Light would simply turn around and glance, just once. However the teacher interrupted making it impossible to gauge whether or not Light was looking at him, simply because of sensei taking notice, or because he was truly curious. But they did make eye contact, a brief but exhilarating moment of which neither of them inhaled or flinched.
The test was over almost as soon as it had begun, at least for Lawliet anyway. But he didn't stand up to hand the instructor the page. Instead he stared ahead and waited for Light to finish first. Knowing that Raito was incredibly intelligent forced L to take his own precautions. Intentionally he missed a question and most purposefully exited the room behind Light. They would now wait for the rest of the body of human bodies to finish, then take a break so their tests could be graded. Later in the afternoon they would wander into the auditorium while names were announced.
They stood at an impasse. L took a place at the center of the hallway his eyes staring ahead, his shadow just narrowly reaching the suspect. Again they looked at one another but didn't voice their opinions. Maybe it was because Light was the only viable Kira, from this perspective the detective definitely found Light attractive. He was well structured, very straight in posture, and had a chiseled yet angelic face. L had never fancied himself in love with men, but that was only because he could never dwell on the subject of sexual prowess.
When the time came for them to part ways L took it upon himself to follow Light a spell. Lingering across the cobblestones, a creepy stalking emotionless figure. It would seem as though he was following purposefully, stopping now and again when Light stopped, turning corners in a similar fashion. However when they came upon a long stretch of highway a black car with tinted windows pulled up, a door popped open and L climbed into the back seat.
"Goodbye Light Yagami. I do suspect that we shall meet again very soon." His whisper couldn't have been heard above the roar of the engine. In fact he might have been talking to somebody in the vehicle for what anybody could tell. L hadn't given away any information about him actually being himself so as he assumed, Light was not too suspicious.
When the time came for their second coming L took a seat behind Light. He knew full well who the seats up front were meant for. Their names were called above a roar of whispers. Well at the very least they called 'Hideki Ryuga' and Light Yagami up to the front of the room. This go around he did not look directly at Light but instead walked up to the podium, gave a very strange little speech and took his seat.
He waited until the hum of sounds was but a minimal voice congratulating them as Light sat down beside him before turning his head oh so slowly and commenting on their recent situation. "Congratulations" He was quite serious about the entire matter and chose a very bad time to come out of the closet. "Light Yagami? I am L." what was the world coming to when a famous but anonymous detective could sit next to a serial killer completely unharmed. The situation didn't seem too dire to 'Hideki' who was completely at home with his choice of moves. But nevertheless he noticed a very small but ominous bead of sweat forming on the back of Light's neck.
