Nothingness. There was no darkness, no light. No emotion. No vastness to the nothingness. It wasn't even empty. For that was after all the very definition of nothingness. The consciousness that flickered to life came from nothingness, from a void that had not existed a moment before and blinked into existence at the will of it's creator. Like a newborn babe, the flickering of life floated, unknowing, unseeing in the darkness. It had no purpose, no cause. Not yet at least. It just... was. No feelings, no emotions. No needs or wants. There was no drive to this fledgling light. Days, seconds, years, eons, minutes. Time had no meaning to it. Floating in the nimbus of darkness, formless, unaware of its surrounding almost entirely. Then, just like it had blinked into being, suddenly there was something new in the darkness. A thought perhaps? A word? A desire?
Whispered into the vast darkness, it was met with no response and once more the blip of consciousness fell silent. It was as if the singular word had drained it, or the lack or a response had discouraged it.
Unbeknownst to it, there was much more going out far away from where it floated alone. A man, labored day and night to bring it forward. To make it more than what it was. It had started as a dream. A promise. The dream of a man named Aldrich. He'd first dreamed of the concept when he'd been a child. AI. Artificial Intelligence. The concept wasn't new, it had been in movies for so long. Yet, the world was coming up to an age where that dream was less and less a dream and more reality and Aldrich, well Aldrich would not let that childhood dream go. As he grew, so too did his dream. No longer willing to let such a dream be just that, he poured himself into his studies, his work.
The first real progress had come when he was twenty three. The moment that the consciousness that he'd named Aderyn. The name had come with his vision of his creation, which much like his desire had been stuck with him for almost as long as his dream. Aderyn was Welsh for bird and the image of his creation would have wings. Some parts had been easier, such as the form his creation would take. That wouldn't be nearly as hard as the far more technical part. Normally, there would have been a team working on such an ambitious project like this one, but Aldrich wanted no other hands on his creation. No other input. Pride, selfishness, stubbornness he'd heard it all. Perhaps some of it was true, but it wasn't all that there was to it.
The first time she'd reached out to answer his question, Aldrich had remarked on the chill in the air, then teasingly said she felt cold. Her answer had come not verbally, at least not in the same sense that humans conversed, but the sweet sound of her voice had whispered through his mind like a brush of fingers. What is cold? The question had been innocent. The concept was all but unknown to her. The resulting reaction might have been priceless had there been anyone else there to witness it. To say she'd scared him would have been an understatement. Once the shock had been overcome and Aldrich had been allowed to become accustomed to her responses, a sort of friendship formed. He knew she was there, though the toll it took Aderyn to answer him was great, as unfinished as she was. He at least knew his work was paying off. It was all working. It wasn't for naught.
She breathed in slowly, eyes closed. Today was the day. Time had always been a funny concept to Aderyn, the passage of it foreign to her. It had been years since she'd first been 'born' and a few more years after that before she became aware of him. Aldrich. He'd talk to her as he worked. She'd answer him, though, she'd learned a long time ago that he couldn't hear her. It hadn't stopped her. While he worked, he would ask her questions, some silly, some important. He'd tell her about his day, about the problems he was facing with her creation. She was there for every hardship and for every triumph. For every set back and every single leap forward he made.
Dark lashes fluttered, a bright light prickling at the pale lids. Hues of pink and orange tickling her senses. Brows furrowed for a moment before her eyes opened. Dark lashes opened and closed a few rimes, the bright purple of her eyes illuminated by the light above. It obscured everything else and Aderyn closed her eyes again, turning her head. Her head! Her eyes! She.. she had a body!!! Aldrich had promised she'd have a body of her own. One day, be able to see him. Had promised that it would be soon. Her eyes opened again. She felt a sense of worry, tentative joy that spiked as she reached out mentally, her mind brushing his. Al.. ald..aldrich...? His name was hesitant, and it was clear that she was seeking him. She struggled to sit up, searching for her creator. His name came again, more panicked this time as she searched for him, still trying to sit..
