"Well, don't you look good enough to eat?" Anaya turned her head at the sound of a male voice, catching sight of a larger figure shrouded in the darkness. It was times like this that she wondered why she bothered to take on a human form instead of revealing her true nature to everyone. At least when she bore her vibrant red skin and horns the human men tended to leave her alone. Oh, but this one wasn't actually human, was he? She sniffed at him as she turned fully in his direction, wrinkling her nose and clutching her bag tighter against her side.

"Do I look like some easy human that will cry and let you do whatever you want to them? Honestly, you're just as bad as them with that ego." The brief shift in her pupils to signal she was not a human didn't seem to deter the other demon, if anything it made him move closer to her. She was so close to her dorm building, too, only a block away when he'd cornered her on the side street after leaving the store.

"You're just so full of energy though, and I'm so hungry." Like hell she was going to let this creep just siphon away any energy she'd gathered from others, that was how she survived! "It won't even hurt, you'll be fine once you sleep it off." That comment solidified the fact that he intended to take quite a bit of energy from her, and she tried to back away as she felt him beginning to draw it from her.

"Knock it off!" Her boots crunched in the snow as she backpedaled only to hit a wall, fumbling with her bag as not to lose her newest purchases. She still needed to get home and make sure all of her papers were done for class the next day, and now she was stuck trying to shove this annoying demon away? Why did she even need to go to college, anyway? Right, her family.

Now that everyone knows about each other, you need to learn to properly socialize and keep up with the times! You're going to live longer than a human, so you need to be refreshing yourself at school every so often!

If she had to redo this kind of schooling every few decades, she was going to rip out her horns and hurl herself off a cliff. Between trying to understand the different cliques between species, between social groups, and everything in between she was already at her wits end. Just when she thought she'd figured out everything there was to know about one species, another one popped in with a surprise. Then to find out some of them could actually interbreed made it an even larger mess that had all led her to this very moment.

"I said knock it off!" Her bag was abandoned as she dropped it in the snow, shoving at the offensive man and digging around in her coat for her phone. While she technically could just shift and attack him, the law tended to look down upon unnecessary violence and often overlooked smaller incidents like this in favor of larger problems. All she had to do was get her phone out, scare the creep off by calling the cops, and then she could go about her night with only some of her energy sucked away.

Cyrus zipped his jacket up a little higher as he felt a cool winter breeze curl around him. Even though he still had one more day left in the week, it felt like it had been two. So despite his meager college budget, he decided to treat himself with takeout from a local Thai restaurant. He had never been there before, but didn't know of any Thai place that could mess up Pad Thai and a side of rangoons.

As he walked through the snow toward his dorm building, he heard a woman's voice. The tone sounded urgent and it traveled across the snow clearer than usual. His first instinct was that it was a group of friends being giddy about Thirsty Thursday, but then he heard the urgent tone again. Pausing, he considered if he should check it out, or if it was just nothing.

Turning his feet, he walked down the sidewalk until he reached a lesser traveled part of the street. He saw a bag in the snow, and a man overshadowing a woman against a brick wall. Part of him wondered if it was a couple making out, but the way she was frantically digging in her pockets finally convinced him.

The teen dropped his takeout in the snow and moved in "Hey!" He moved in closer, hoping that would be enough to scare the guy away. If anything, it lessened Cyrus' own resolve as he realized the man was larger than he originally appeared.

The man didn't seem to react, so Cyrus grabbed his shoulder roughly to spin him around. It only brought the man partially off her, and that was when his eyes met the attackers. Cyrus now knew the man was a demon, and that he bit off far more than he could chew. But he was already too invested to give up now, so he curled up a fist and struck the demon in the nose.

Pain shot through Cyrus' hand, but that was nothing compared to seeing the demon barely react. The attacker looked Cyrus dead in the eye and said "Weak as you are, looks like you have energy to spare."

Knowing that the demon would try to drain him of his energy, Cyrus had to act fast. He didn't even have time to consider what a mess he stepped into. So he brought his hands up to grab the demon's coat, and put all his weight into throwing him off balance.

The demon was too confident in drawing energy from the pesky human, and held a lazy stance. But as he drew, he saw the human was not getting weaker. Before he could draw faster, he was tumbling into the snow at the hands of a little human!

Cyrus got up quickly from the snow and breathed heavily as adrenaline coursed through his veins. He didn't waste time thinking about how he was still conscious, and instead landed a hard kick into the demon's ribs before delivering another.

The demon coughed violently and rolled before getting up and sprinting jaggedly away. Cyrus stood and watched while his heart still raced in his chest. Did he really just best a demon that was a head taller than him? How was he not unconscious in the snow?

Cyrus turned to see the woman against the wall. Their eyes met as the snow gently fell around them.

"Are you alright? Are you feeling weak?" He'd heard when a demon drew energy that it could be very bad, but that was the extent of his knowledge. So he spoke before she could answer "Should I call an ambulance?"

Was that another voice she was hearing now? Had she perhaps gotten lucky and an officer had been patrolling the area already? No, this was a young, unarmed human man rushing to her rescue, apparently. The poor thing was going to end up half dead in the snow if he didn't run, but he was persistent as he not only pulled the demon away from her, but proceeded to throw him into the snow. That was.. Intriguing.

"I think he's--" Down, clearly, but that didn't stop the human from kicking the unfortunate demon while he was down. Either the human was incredibly lucky, or he wasn't what he looked like. Either way, it was all too satisfying to see her attacker fleeing the scene like a dog with its tail between its legs. It was almost worth how tired she felt from having the energy sapped from her, almost. He hadn't taken enough to seriously injure her, but enough that she felt exhausted and barely heard the questions at first. There were so many of them coming at once, and she stared at this new man strangely for a long moment before speaking.

"No, no ambulance." She bent down to retrieve her bag slowly, getting a loose hold on it before standing back up. "I'm okay. I think." What kind of a human did was this one had just done? "You.. Knew that was a demon, and you didn't run away?"

As Cyrus listened and caught his breath, he could feel the intoxicating sensation of his adrenaline beginning to fade. It had been a long time since he was last in a scuffle, so it almost felt as if he was sensitive to the sensation again.

With his body slowly returning to normal, he was able to get a good look at the unfortunate woman. Looking at her long dark hair and eyes, she looked very pretty, but also very tired. Cyrus ran his fingers through his long brown hair as he thought. Perhaps an ambulance would have been overkill, but he still didn't like how she looked like a wilting flower.

"Well... I didn't know he was a demon until I got close..." The thought reminded him of how badly this could have gone. As for why he didn't run away, he wasn't sure. His best guess was instinct kicked in, for better or for worse. Thankfully it was for the better this time.

"You look pretty weary. How about I walk you to wherever you were going?" Looking into her eyes, he brought his arms out, getting the feeling she was ready to sway.

"I'm not far from here, honestly." Did she really need someone to walk her home? "You dropped your food." Anaya moved to retrieve his food before bumping into his arms, straightening up and grasping one with a look of surprise. Had the bastard really sucked that much energy from her? Oh, if she ever got her hands on him in the daylight he was going to regret ever setting his sights on her.

"I guess I could use some help getting home. I don't think he'll come back after that beating you gave him, but better safe than sorry." She did not want to run into the demon again now that he'd worn her down like this. "Most people wouldn't have stopped, so thank you." Her cheeks turned a light pink when she realized she was still gripping his arm and she immediately let go, stuffing her hands into her coat pockets.

"It's.. Uh, just down the block."

Thanking her for handing him his take-out, Cyrus briefly hoped that it hadn't become cold before realizing how silly that was in comparison to everything. So he smiled and said "Yeah, better safe than sorry."

He thought about her comment about most people not stopping, and was embarrassed to know that he almost kept walking, since his first instinct was that there was no problem. However, he couldn't bring himself to make that comment. After all, she was safe.

As the pair began walking, Cyrus kept close and said "I'm Cyrus, by the way. I couldn't help but notice we didn't trade names." It was a light attempt at humor since this was far from a normal way of meeting someone.

While they walked, Cyrus began to wonder if the woman lived in the same dorm building just ahead. He imagined she was a student, since it seemed everyone their age within a few mile radius was.

"No, I guess we didn't. I'm Anaya." She thought for a brief moment before laughing. "I don't think I've ever given a guy my name this way before, I have to admit it's a bit funny. Or maybe I'm just so tired that the little things are funnier than they should be." If there was any chance of her getting through her classes tomorrow without being half dead, she was going to need to get some energy from someone, but it seemed far too forward to ask her rescuer for some of his. He probably wasn't even aware of what she was just yet, being that she was still in her human skin and looking not at all intimidating to the human eye.

"You really didn't have to, I'm just up there." She raised a hand to point toward the building that was coming into sight. "I'm embarrassed he caught me off guard like that. My friends are always telling me to be careful going out at night, but I never thought I'd actually have something like that happen." She did feel embarrassed about it, being caught off guard and nearly seriously hurt because of her own carelessness, and all for what, the late night shopping she had decided to do?

Cyrus had never heard of the name Anaya before, but thought it was pretty and matched her. Then she pointed to the building she lived in. Cyrus chuckled "Looks like I would have been heading there anyways. I'm on the second floor, room 206."

When they reached the building, he held open the door for her with his sore hand and said "I hear this campus is pretty safe compared to others. I think you just had some really bad luck, unfortunately. But hey, I know food isn't exactly something that replaces the same energy taken, but I know Thai food always gives me a little boost. Would you like to split it? It may help."

Cyrus had no problem sharing the meal, since the Thai restaurant seemed to be the type to have large servings. But in truth, he both wanted to make sure the girl was alright before saying goodbye, and he found her very cute. It had already taken quite a bit of his own willpower to not check her out, as he didn't want to make a girl who was attacked feel even more uncomfortable.

"Really?" She paused to give him a surprised look before continuing to walk. "I'm on the top floor." What were the chances of them living in the same building? Going to school together, sure, but living in the same building? It was such an ironic coincidence she couldn't help but to laugh again. At least she didn't feel so bad for having him walk her home when he was going there anyway.

"Well, aren't you a gentleman." She slipped through the open doorway with ease, fishing her keys out of her bag as they started up the stairs. "I haven't eaten yet, so that would be nice. You'll have to excuse any clutter at my place, I've been so busy with schoolwork I haven't had much time to clean." She took the stairs carefully, glancing periodically at her companion until they'd finally reached her door.

"Come on in." Unlocking it and stepping inside, she turned on the tall lamp in the living room and bent down to unlace her boots. "Make yourself at home. I'll get something for us to drink. Any preferences?"

Cyrus chuckled "You should see my dorm. It's in desperate need of organizing, but I'm proud to say there's nothing piled on the bed." That was probably because it was his favorite part of the room.

After ascending the stairs and walking the short way to her door, Cyrus followed her inside. When she bent to unlace her boots, the teen couldn't help but gaze. He averted his sight quickly, so as not to be caught before removing his own shoes. However, could definitely say he liked what he saw.

"I'll take anything strongish, like a soda if you have one." He then stepped inside as she moved to the kitchenette. Inside the living area, he took a seat on the couch near a coffee table that would suit them both.

Looking around, he didn't hear or see a dorm mate. Even though it was already past dark, it was still early in the night for college students. So he imagined her dorm mate was just out and about. Cyrus knew his own dorm mate was most likely at his date's dorm building across the street.

He opened the bag and pulled out the food. He was happy to feel that the packages were still plenty warm, and had not been dampened by the snow. Picking up a few fortune cookies, he smiled, always thinking that was a Chinese restaurant custom. But he looked forward to it all the same.

"I think I still have some in the fridge." She shrugged off her coat and locked the door back up before going to the kitchen, opening the fridge and looking inside. "I just have the basic brand, so I hope that's okay." Half the time she forgot what humans ate or drank normally, considering that her roommate was another demon.

"Here we go." She came back out with two cans and a stack of napkins, setting them on the small table before sinking into the spot beside him. "My roommate isn't home right now, so it's just the two of us for now." Which worked fine for her to be able to enjoy the quiet while she recovered from that bastard sapping away at her energy. She would have to find someone to feed from the following day, unless.. No, she couldn't feed from her rescuer unknowingly, could she? The poor man didn't even know what she was yet!

Cyrus soon found that 'basic brand' was Coke, and couldn't be happier. Even though trace amounts of adrenaline were still pumping through him, the thought of Thai and pop felt like his own combination of soul food.

The teen put a couple of rangoons and a serving of pad Thai on each of their plates. As they ate, he felt much better and was able to think clearer. He then wondered why he wasn't feeling exhausted, as the attacker was certainly a demon looking for a meal. After all, Anaya looked pretty tired.

He turned to Anaya and said "I've never been fed on by a demon before, but I was certain I would have back there. But I don't feel anything?" He was more thinking out loud, as opposed to expecting an answer. He just found it very strange.

"You don't feel.. Anything?" Anaya stopped eating and gave him a strange look. That didn't seem right. The demon had at least tried to siphon energy off him, there was no reason he should feel normal. Hell, she was much stronger than a human and she was tired from it.

"That doesn't make sense. You should feel tired." Did he just have an over abundance of energy, maybe? That would be an interesting idea, and that meant there was more of a chance she could sip away at his just enough to get back to functioning.

"The people I get energy from usually get a little tired, but then I make sure to stop. It's interesting you feel fine." Oops. She gave him a sheepish smile, shoveling another bite of food into her mouth and looking away until she'd finished it.

"..Right. I'm, uh, I'm a demon too. I probably should have mentioned that before. But I won't steal your energy or anything, I promise!" She held her hands up in a mock surrender as her cheeks turned pink. "I don't do that kind of thing without asking, usually."

Cyrus shook his head after putting his fork down. "Nope. I feel pretty normal." That was aside from the lingering feeling of being in a fight.

Picking his fork up again, he heard her allude she was a demon. He couldn't help but freeze in a mixture of confusion and natural concern. A silence hung in the room as the teen thought. He soon came to the conclusion that if she wanted to feed from him, it would have already happened a dozen times before sitting in her apartment. Besides, she wouldn't feed on the guy who stuck his neck out for her, would she?

Even as he reached that conclusion, he was wondering why she didn't look like a demon. She looked completely human to him, and as he looked at her again he saw no signs to say otherwise.

"I didn't know. Although, how could I? Are you wearing some kind of make-up or an illusion?" Cyrus grew interested in how such a thing was possible. His shoulders relaxed as he was not worried about her feeding off of him.

"I can.. Ah, change the way I look." Her cheeks turned a lovely shade of red as she fidgeted uncomfortably. What a way to ruin the night, right? He didn't seem too upset about it though, more curious than anything, so many she hadn't ruined the night entirely. "I don't look too different from this, really." She pushed her food around awkwardly before taking another bite.

"Sometimes it's just easier to blend in with the humans and not have people staring at me like I'm some sort of spectacle. You humans have it easy a lot of the time." Not all the time, but they definitely were more normal looking, at least by the general standard.

"Would you have kept walking if you knew I was a demon?" Million dollar question.

Cyrus listened, curious as to how she looked in her demon form. His first guess was maybe red skin and horns, although he remembered there were some demons who had different features. He was tempted to ask to see her change, but knew far better than that. So he nodded, understanding that it could help her blend in at a mostly human campus.

Then she asked a question that surprised him, but not as much as her revealing she was a demon. Would he have still stepped in? Cyrus knew from the first angle he saw the attack, that she was obscured from view. So human, demon, or sack of potatoes he wouldn't have been able to see the difference. However, he knew what she was getting at.

The teen ran a hand through his braided hair, a habit that revealed when he was deep in thought. He nodded again "I believe I would have." Even though he'd never admit it, Cyrus wasn't the most practical or conventionally smart guy, but he did have a caring heart. So stepping in the middle of two demons who may feed on him was something that wouldn't have come to mind in the heat of it.

"I'm glad I did. I was lucky, not getting injured and well... I'm happy to have met you. You didn't deserve that, and I know it was the right choice."

He believed he would have? Well, that wasn't exactly reassuring, but it wasn't the worst answer in the world. At least it meant he was being honest, possibly even to a fault. Most men would have rushed to say yes and protect their masculine pride, but he had taken the time to think and answered honestly.

"I'm glad you did, too. Most demons aren't stupid enough to go after another one like that, so I guess he must have been desperate, or just cocky." Whichever was the case had still turned out to be problematic, but hopefully the fact that he had been bested by a human would wound his pride enough to leave her be in the future. A demon bested by a human, that was enough to make any demon feel shameful.

"So, uh, you're just upstairs, you said? That's some good luck, then I don't feel so bad for you walking me back, since you had to come here anyway." She stifled a yawn and went back to eating, eyeing him briefly before placing down her utensil and fidgeting.

"Would you mind if I sat a bit closer to you? I don't mean to be rude, but if I could intrude just a tiny bit and.." How did one politely ask a stranger to sap up some of their energy? She was clearly flustered trying to form a proper sentence, gesturing absently before huffing in frustration. "I'm sorry, I'm being rude."

Cyrus nodded, listening to her reasoning on why a demon would feed on another. He didn't even know they fed off one another, so all he could do was soak in the information with curiosity. And since he did not know the attacker, it was certainly beyond his guess.

She then asked about where he lived. He smiled "Nope. I'm on the floor beneath you, room 206. So I actually have to double back since I climbed up an extra story of stairs to get here." He smiled as he was just teasing about it being an inconvenience.

Enjoying the Thai meal with her, he soon heard her ask if she could sit closer. Continuing before he answered, her words trailed off before being capped with an apology. He didn't readily piece together what she was asking, so he held a confused look on his face as he tried to understand.

Then it hit him. "You mean feed off me?" He considered asking what it would do to him besides making him weary. But then again, he thought this girl was cute and wanted to help her. So he said "Yeah but I've never felt that before. Maybe just a little to start so I can see how I react?"

"Right, under, why did I think.. Yeah." Clearly her nerves were getting the better of her. Now she felt just a teeny bit bad about it, but the smile on his face said he wasn't concerned about a flight of stairs. That was a small relief that eased some of her nervousness, but the look of confusion on his face flared it back up as she tried to form a coherent sentence to explain herself.

"Just a little." She nodded in understanding and awkwardly shifted closer to him, stopping once her shoulder brushed against his and she could feel the heat from his body. That was all she needed, just some heat and some energy from the man beside her. Just the heat itself was pleasant and caused her to close her eyes, a soft hum coming from her as she cozied herself just a bit closer and began to draw from him. Just a little, just a careful, slow draw of energy from the human as she sighed in relief. It was so god awful tiring to have her energy stolen from her, and this human was just so full of it she could barely stop herself from drawing more.

"Is that okay?" She spoke without opening her eyes, rubbing against his side with a noise of contentment. "Not too much?"
