This was not what Abigail was expecting from her English teacher. An addressed envelope to some soldier across seas, this was an all year project and it counted for a third of her grade. The project was writing to a pen pal, getting to know a soldier and be their friend. "Lame." Was all she thought it was. Everyone was assigned a man or women from a unit across seas to write to, and the first letters were coming from the students. Instead of doing normal class work, they were given the class time to write the first letter.

Abigail stared at her note book, she had no idea what she was supposed to write. Not knowing the person made this harder than she thought this would be.

To Whom Ever Receives This:
As you probably have been informed, or maybe not, this is a school project for the senior class. We were given little information as to what we are really doing except that we are writing letters.

I don't know what to actually write, so I'm making this up as I go...So where to begin?? I am Abigail, a senior at North Town High. Trying to survive the last year of high school and all the drama that comes with it. In all honesty, I think my teacher grading us on writing a pen pal is dumb, but a grade is a grade right? What do you think?

Anyways, I'm 18 years old, live with my father and older brother. I work part time so when graduation gets here I can bail out. Living in the same place your whole life stinks. I want to travel and see the world, sort of like you. I mean your probably not in the fanciest place, or nicest place but your able to see different places. Learn new cultures and languages I am sure. Just the idea of being able to say I have done things and seen things normal people can not or would not do is intriguing to me.

So tell me about yourself, who are you? What do you actually do? What do you like and dislike? I hate spiders, they are creepy and crawly and utterly useless.

I'm not sure what all you can say about where you are at, but what do you see every day? Is it a normal base scenery or is it different?

I was not given your name, so I'm not sure if your a male or female or even how to go about this. So hopefully when you finish reading this you won't be laughing to yourself.

Abigail folded the envelope up and sealed it. Luckily she finished just as the bell rang. Handing the envelope to her teacher she headed to her next class, wondering how long it takes for the letters to actually get there.

It would take a few weeks to get to the right person, due to deployment and the fact that patrols and missions happen which takes time to do. Thus the letter might reach the base but the soldier wasnt there to receive it. But eventually Salvatore would be handed the letter and at first was confused. He didnt know why he had received the letter but then after being told his group had been volen-told to do it was the end of it. A harsh life for a working soldier, but hey maybe it would be fun.

Arriving to his bunk after a shower he would have a towel wrapped around his neck as he finally opens up the envelope and begin reading. He found it a bit amusing and went to get to replying. If a teacher was annoying then an officer would be twice as so.

Dear Abigail T

Hello random person who got me, dont know if this is a lottery winner but you could have been given worse. At least this is an easy task maybe? A bit annoying for sure but could be twice as hard.

Well since we wouldnt want you to get a bad grade let me see, I am Specialist Salvatore. I am with the Army branch and mostly work with patrols and helping people. It isnt a hard job like working on tanks or other vehicles. I dont think I could do those engineers job, so much work and grease.

I am 21 years old and single son of my family, no older brother or sister here. How is having a sibling? Always wondered how it was. Also yea I had that same thought and so I enlisted, can say I am seeing new parts of the world for sure. A bit sandy then I want but still it is something new, so I can get behind your desire to leave. Just dont take my path, the food is so not worth it. Also there is Camel spiders here that get big, so maybe stay away haha.

My scenery is alright I guess? It is the base but also the towns and mountains nearby. It is sorta like what you see but also seeing it in person is different too.

Fuck I dont have enough paper, didnt know I had a pen pal. I will get some for the next time, since this is the less hectic thing I have in my life. So maybe some normality will be good for my mental health.

Till next time

After that he would go to put it in a envelope and getting a sticker he went to put the address on the front. He had to fill out her name but other than that they had stickers with the schools address and all that other information. The military did make sure things like this was always ready for such things. A template for many things so a few changes and then bam the school is easy to fill in.

Salvatore went to bed after, wondering how this pen pal thing will be. Beats fighting to pass the time.

A few weeks had gone by, she had figured her pen pal had died laughing when her letter was received. Thus no return mail. Walking into her English class the teacher handed her, the envelope. It was a bit bent and creased which showed it's journey, sitting down at her desk she opened it and began reading. Opening her notebook she began writing her reply.

Specialist Salvatore:

I Love your last name, got a vintage ring to it! Hope all is well and safe, news reports here at home have been saying that there has been bombing occuring more frequently, villages being destroyed. So stay safe!
Camel spiders? I must Google it later to see, but they sound so gross! No thank you.
Having a sibling has it's ups and downs. Nothing great, nothing bad. We fight, we love, we are typical I guess. He followed my dad's foot steps and became a Jar Head. Yes my dad was in the service, although he does not talk about it much. Currently my brother is stationed on the states soil. Medical issues with his wife and baby after delivery of my nephew's.
Well class is almost over and I have a game, so I look forward to your next letter.
Ps: what do you guys do for fun over there? All I can picture is sand dune buggies. Ha!
