Rose Red shifted her basket from one arm to the other and gulped painfully. The plan was perfect, the plan IS perfect, she kept thinking it over and over in her head as she walked down the corridor down to the garden where Snow White was waiting with the Huntsman who didn’t know what they were planning. She made double sure and triple sure that the measurements were correct and she made sure that the Huntsman was the right kind of man for the job. Though he had a hard and some might say cruel occupation, he had a softer disposition than most of his caliber. He wouldn’t be able to do the job that she would tell him he needed to do.
The garden was vast and green and filled with so many beautiful flowers and trees. Yet in all that beauty and color, it seemed that one woman was determined to absorb all of it and leave nothing but white, black, and gray. Snow White sat in the middle of their rose bushes on a cold stone bench, the ones that the king and the sisters grew so many years ago. She tried to keep the tears from her eyes, but her cheeks were already wet from the fat and hot tears that had already spilled. Rose Red came out the door and their eyes locked, they both had the same expression of anticipation, dread, and confusion. Rose hated seeing her sister so distraught, she always thought Snow was much stronger than her. They each saw what strengths the other had, but they also critized themselves for they lacked. Snow was strong and brave and kind to a fault. Rose was clever and charming and quick on her toes. They both kept level gazes and it was almost as if they could read each others' minds. They both wondered how on earth they had gotten there.
They were so young before when Snow White had lost her mother and Red Rose lost her father. One would say that the two meeting was fortune smiling on the two sisters, but for Snow, it had only brought misfortune. It hadn't been bad at first, since the two sisters got along so well. From day one they were fast friends and played endlessly throughout the castle. The King and Queen had a happy marriage for a few years, but as the two got older the Queen realized that Snow White was a force to be reckoned with. For some reason the new Queen would not have a daughter like Snow, who was kind and hard working and naive. Red Rose, unlike her sister, was clever, quick, and aloof. Though the two were quite different and they were step sisters instead of blood sisters, they might as well have been born together.
The Queen still hated Snow for her unending kindness especially towards those in need and her beauty that eclipsed her own. Rose always knew Snow was the most beautiful of the two. She had many noblemen and princes vying for her hand. Rose had her own, but not nearly as many as her sister. Her mother became quite enraged that she couldn’t even compete for her husband’s attention. The Queen endlessly ranted and raved to her own daughter until she finally couldn’t take it anymore. Especially when that accursed mirror answered back with her only question she ever gave it; “Who is the fairest of them all?” “Snow White.”
The Queen said, Snow White must die for the unforgivable crime of being far more beautiful than she, Rose then insisted that she take on the task. Which might seem odd, but Rose in her cleverness had noticed her mother becoming more hostile towards Snow and made sure that she assured her mother that she still loved her more than anyone else. She would need to stay close to her mother in order to keep her poison at bay and to protect Snow at the same time. “I must protect you, mother,” she said. “If anyone found out that you were somehow responsible it would mean the end of your reign.”
“This is true,” her mother said. “But what will you do, my daughter?”
“You’ve taught me much about poisons and all manner of potions,” Rose Red explained. “And so I will make use of those skills.”
Rose Red turned to the Huntsman before she made it to her sister. This was set up as an escorted excursion into the woods, the princess would need protection after all. “You know what to do once you’re deep enough,” she said and passed over what looked like a simple picnic basket full of bread and cheese and fruit, but inside was also a strange wooden box and beneath that just an ordinary looking apple.
Rose went up to Snow and they embraced. “You’re sure this is going to work?” Snow asked.
“I made sure the potion was exact,” Rose whispered back. “It’ll only give you the appearance of death and then after that we will transfer you away from here, you must live my sister.”
Snow White nodded as they parted. “I will see you again, Rosey,” Snow said, using the nickname they made so many years ago.
“And you, Snowy,” Rose replied.
The two parted and Rose’s chest constricted painfully with a sudden surge of dread and she wondered if this was the really the right decision.
