Having Multiple Accounts

I see that we are permitted to have more than one account. My questions include are we allowed to have two active accounts at the same time? What are permitted reasons for having more than one account? What are reasons we shouldn't use a additional accounts for? I've tried to look up answers to these questions and either can't find them or haven't tried hard enough to find them.
