Simon was waiting for the right moment to ask Maddie out.
She was the most beautiful girl he had ever laid eyes on and had moved in next door during the early part of the summer. Unlike most girls her age, that looked like her, she was actually open to talking to him and hanging out - even if he was pressured into bringing over a welcome-cake by his mother. And ever since then, he and Maddie had become best of friends. As friends as he got with anyone. They hung out almost daily since she was new to town and hadn't met anyone else their age.
He was a bit anxious about starting school in the fall, when she'd meet all the other guys who would surely be interested in her. She'd probably leave his friend group then, once she realized what a lose he was. But that was still 6 weeks away. So he had at least 6 weeks to hang out with her before she realized what a mistake he was. And today, well, today he was going to ask her out.
There was a pool party going on for the local neighborhood. His parents loved being social even if it was the bane of his life. So there were plenty of kids of varying ages there and while some of the other girls looked pretty in their bikinis, he only had eyes for Maddie.
"Cannonball!" He yelled before bouncing off the diving board. He balled up as best he could, but with his lithe body the splash really wasn't that impressive.
