The institute had gone rotten, completely mad. There might have been something in the mountain air. It was the remote location that certainly allowed for such a thing to happen. The doctors were dead, hiding or in some absurd cases counted among the roaming patients. A cast of unsettled characters having finally dropped off the deep end.

No one had enough sense to ask how everything had gone so wrong. The madness might have poured out like an infection if not for the lack of anywhere to go.

Those who wondered into the woods were dead.

Scavenged.

The hallways flickered, the emergency power from the complete lockdown leaving the structure a tangle of dead ends and dangers. The smell of death and decay lingered in some places-

Luther had been a patient for a long time. A violent child his parents had been unable-no unwillingly to care for. He had been dropped off at institute and had never received a proper visit.

A sense of the old anger still lingered in what was now a large man, but he had gotten better-

Than things had gone off the deep end.

He roamed the hallway, having established a territory of his own. Luther made an example of a few and now most kept away. A will to survive had remained in most of the maddened patients. The big man was not someone to be tested.

He ducked under a doorway, bulking form blocking out light in the flickering hallway. A hand idly scratched an emerging beard.

Luther had heard a commotion.

The mind could be frightful when it was unwell and terrifying when it slipped the tacks all together and dove into madness.

Emelie's reason for being in the institute had not been a secret. She'd been abused, luckily for her the sexual abuse hadn't started till she was fifteen, if that could even be considered lucky. Emelie had already been a broken doll, but the addition of sexual abuse had shattered her mind.

Strange things had started occurring shortly after and the broken doll had not been worth keeping, no matter how pretty she was. By age seventeen she'd been placed into the institute and a strong combination of drugs and brutal treatments had seemed to stop the horrors, at least for a little while.

There was no explanation as to why, even though tied to the bed, cuts appeared overnight on her pale skin. Her screams often ignored and while unexplainable, not one really cared enough to help her.

And then the hospital fell and she was set free.

The cocktail of drugs slowly left her system and though her mind was left in fractured pieces, she was better off.

For a while at least.

She was an easy target from both the monsters within the hospital and within her own mind.

Emelie had fled into an area of the hospital she normally avoided, her soft almost sweet giggling had been how they'd found her. "Teddy will come. tee-hee. already on his way. he will show the bad men"

Purple hair, a soft lavender in truth hung around her shoulders lankly and large, frightened blue eyes stared up at the group of men around her. They reminded her of the times before the hospital and she was cowering now.

"nonononononononononono" the manta of the singular word soft.

A noise entering the room had her looking up. The fear vanished at the sight of Luther and she gave a squeal of excitement.

"You came! I knew you would!" Dodging around the men she flung herself at Luther. "Teddy!" Arms wrapped around one of his arms and she pointed at the men. "Bad men!"

Whatever the insane, little female expected was anyone's guess.

Luther was silent in his approach, there was a group of them. The flickering half-hanging light in the hallway showing peeks of the scene. He had no desire to help the young woman. It was assumed she would flee with the rest of the unwelcome bunch. These were his hallways. His ward-

The mans bulk jolted in surprise when a small body flung itself toward him. Surprisingly strong arms wrapping around his own. Luther slowly turned his head, looking down at the girl.

She was lucky he hadn't lashed out.

There had been an urge-

Luther reacted to the second urge, one of them trying to take advantage of his distraction. A large fist collided with his attacker. There was a sickening crack, body collapsing to the ground. Blood. It happened quickly, the rest of the group scattering. The bear like man watched them go with a indifferent expression-

He looked down at the girl before turning and starting to walk deeper into the ward. Luther made no attempt to shake her off, figuring she would be quick to follow the others.

The violence that happened around her was all but ignored as she clung to her Teddy. Cuddled into him, as without a care in the world.

Blood came around her dirty shoes, which once upon a time had been white. Emelie didn't pay any heed.

As he turned around, she moved with him, her head falling to his arm. "You have been gone so long Teddy. I really missed you."

As they moved through his territory, she filled the silence with mindless gibberish. She was in no way afraid of him like the others had been.

After a little while, she released his arm and walked beside him, humming softly.

Luther ignored her, moving through the flickering hallways at a leisurely pace. It was clear she had no intention of leaving him alone. He stopped. Dark eyes looking down at the humming girl. Strange. Her touch had been clinging. A distinct lack of fear in her actions.

Teddy?

It was clear the strange creature was just as mad as the rest of them. Luther reached over, large hand coming to rest of her delicate head. The pads of his fingers digging in.

There was a firmness to the touch, a tentative urge to silence.

"What are you doing?" He finally drawled. His voice was deep, slow.

There wasn't a lick of fear in her and when he looked down at her she smiled at him.

There was no issue with his lack of conversation. In her mind, he was Teddy.. Protector, friend..

The hand that fell to her head made Emelie close her eyes. The danger there was lost on her. For she was safe now. She'd found Teddy. Even when the pressure was applied.

The question made her giggle and she shrugged. "Whatever you're doing. I didn't think I'd ever find you again." There was a sad, wistfulness to her tone. The eyes on him showed no fear. Perhaps adoration and a deep, unsettling trust in him.

"So what are we doing Teddy?"

Her 'teddy' looked down the rather blank smile her eyes showing a different emotion. Lurther sound himself unsettled. His hand dropped away without crushing the creatures skull. She was as mad. They all were. He resumed walking moving them into the smaller cramped hallways which had once had been allowed for staff.

Luther was heading back to camp.

The den he had constructed for himself in the middle of the madhouse. He lapped the area a few times a day, sometimes branching out to look for supplies. One of the few with the presence of mind to fed himself-

The woods would be the only option left after things ran out-

If there really was no one coming.

Luther jerked open a door revealing a larger supply closet. There was a bed shove behind a metal gate which would normally hold dangerous supplies. It was locked.

He had a key.

The space allowed him peace to sleep. Luther looked down at the strange girl. Could she have a use?
