Profile Banners?

I want to make some example profile banners for my photoshop thread. Can I get some specs? I know the display size is variable depending in window width/Desktop/Mobile, etc., I have a working mock-up template, but I need to know things like the maximum file size and image formats.

I've tried a 5MB .gif and it gave me an error that its too big. A 2.5 MB .png worked fine. I'd assume the file size limit is between those values. You're not likely to run into issues with file size unless you're working with massive .gif files, to be honest.

.png, .jpg and .gif all work fine. I've not tried anything else and I doubt anyone would feel the need to use any other format.

@Vekseid would have more insight on the technicalities.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully Veks can give some more specs as I want to try some collage-style .gifs which are going to be quite large, file-size wise so exact numbers would be handy.
